The kingdom of Allada in the seventeenth century was an important supplier of slaves for the trans-Atlantic trade, and also an object of Christian missionary activity, but the earlier history of its interactions with Europeans is poorly documented. It has previously been assumed that the first direct Portuguese contact with the Allada area occurred in 1553. However, recently discovered documents in Portuguese archives correct this view. These comprise two petitions to the King of Portugal from an ambassador of the King of Allada currently in Lisbon: although undated, the content of one of them enables it to be dated to either 1544 or 1555, more probably the former; given the time which the ambassador had already spent in Portugal, his original dispatch from Allada occurred in 1540/1541 or 1551/1552. The petitions document the Allada king’s interest in the establishment of a Christian church in his realm, as well as commercial relations.

Resumo Apresenta-se neste estudo um documento inédito de 1536 relativo à funda-ção da freguesia de Santiago de Sesimbra, através do qual se entrevêem os sucessi-vos problemas resultantes do decréscimo populacional da antiga freguesia do Cas-telo face ao dinamismo económico da Ribeira de Sesimbra, bem como as fórmulas alcançadas pelos seus representantes perante o Mestre da Ordem de Santiago no sentido de encontrar soluções que permitissem assegurar a perenidade dos serviços religiosos para benefício das duas comunidades. Abstract A hitherto unpublished document from 1536 related to the foundation of the parish of Santiago of Sesimbra is presented in this study. Through this document , one can assess the successive issues caused by the demographic decline of the old parish of Castelo in contrast with the economic dynamism in the Ribeira of Sesimbra, as well as the solutions meted out by each of the parishes' representatives before the Master of the Order of Santiago as a way to find solutions that might secure the perenity of the religious services for the benefit of both communities.

Pretende-se, com este trabalho, fazer um levantamento das referências aos documentos medievais e modernos do antigo cartório de Santarém, dado que muitos eruditos foram atraídos pela riqueza e dimensão do seu espólio, bem como ao seu uso ao longo da Idade Moderna, até 1810, data do aparente desaparecimento da documentação mais antiga. Os fragmentos de pergaminho medievais e modernos foram desprezados e ignorados por séculos e só começaram a ser revalorizados a partir do século XX, fruto de iniciativas individuais de alguns investigadores. Fragmentos de pergaminhos usados como folhas de guarda ou de encadernação improvisada em manuscritos (códices e documentos avulsos) e impressos abundam em todos os arquivos europeus e nos mais diversos fundos e colecções, bem como em bibliotecas. This study seeks to shed light on a fragment of the Ordo iudiciarius (1214-1216) by Tancredus
Bononiensis, written in medieval Portuguese. It complements the study of another fragment which has
already been published. These two fragments were part of two different codices which have been
dismantled in the meantime. These vestiges written in the vernacular corroborate the hegemony of this
text by the grandmaster from Bologna. His work had a vast impact throughout Western Europe, reflected
in various manuscripts in Latin and translations in French, German and Portuguese. Hence, this study
simultaneously aims to further our knowledge about the Ius commune movement in a Romance language,
which developed alongside the movement in Latin. In Portugal, this juridical current reached its zenith
during the early years of the Avis dynasty’s reign, under King João I. These fragments of the Ordo, the
only evidence known to exist in Portuguese, constitute yet another invaluable element for studying how
the Ius commune was received in Portugal during the Late Middle Ages.

O Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra apenas possui livros dessa tipologia a partir de 1712. Este trabalho apresenta um índice de todos os documentos contidos no referido livro, procurando assim suprir uma lacuna no conhecimento da região, debilitado pelo desaparecimento da documentação notarial até ao século XVIII.

materiality of historical sources used by historians can be, which in turn can illuminate
both the social careers of local administrative officials and their intimate connection and
complicity with the royal administration. This work also encompasses the reform of the
municipal charters, one of the main legislative initiatives of the administrative machine in
the early Modern Age in Portugal, confirming that its planning and implementation began
earlier than previously thought by historians. Finally, by closely pursuing through the
centuries the transmission of the main manuscript sources used in this essay, one has a
glimpse of the bureaucratic procedures and archival organization during this period in
Portugal.

A maioria dos estudos religiosos em Portugal tem centralizado o seu enfoque na Igreja Católica e nas diversas denominações protestantes. Contudo, durante o período ditatorial que envolveu o país de 1926 a 1974, e especialmente desde 1961, as autoridades portuguesas despenderam uma considerável quantidade de recursos e tempo investigando as Testemunhas de Jeová, cujo número de membros era aparentemente insignificante. Este artigo procurará entender as razões desse fenómeno e historiará a implantação desse movimento no território metropolitano e ultramarino, com destaque para Angola e Moçambique. ##### Most of the religious studies in Portugal have dealt mainly with the Catholic Church and several Protestant
denominations. Nevertheless, during the Dictatorship that dominated the country from 1926 to 1974, and especially

A temática dos cartulários concelhios, conhecidos em Portugal como “tombos”, enquanto repositório das deliberações régias ou municipais, está a ganhar espaço na diplomática municipal portuguesa como meio privilegiado de compreensão da projecção da autonomia, autoridade e identidade dos concelhos. A lei de 1431 teve um papel importante na definição de uma matriz do tombo concelhio, aperfeiçoada com a experiência da aplicação do anterior modelo de regimento outorgado pelo corregedor João Mendes a vários concelhos ao longo da década anterior. Posteriormente, apesar de persistirem iniciativas autónomas dos concelhos para fixar e validar cópias da sua documentação num suporte mais perene, o enquadramento régio como autoridade legal sancionadora sobrepôs-se ao longo da Idade Moderna. Em simultâneo, os tombos deixaram de ser apenas repositórios de documentos e passaram a ser também potenciais veículos de uma memória, uma intencionalidade, uma ideologia e uma narrativa, não só na sua génese mas também em momentos posteriores por via da adição de estratos documentais ou da reorientação das suas funções. Apresentamos um breve enquadramento cronológico deste processo com base nas informações recolhidas nos tombos que sobreviveram, e disponibilizamos informação relativa às suas características físicas, datação, usos ao longo do tempo e conteúdos.

The topic of council cartularies, known in Portugal as “tombos”, which were used as repositories for royal or municipal deliberations, is gaining ground within Portuguese municipal diplomatics as a preferred method of understanding the projection of council autonomy, authority and identity. The law that was approved in 1431 played an important role in defining a matrix for the councils’ tombo (registry), having been improved by the experience of the previous application of the model statute granted by the magistrate João Mendes to several councils throughout the previous decade. Later on, even though the councils continued to launch their own initiatives to secure and validate copies of their documentation in a more permanent way, the royal framework, in its capacity as the sanctioning legal authority, was the dominant method used throughout the Modern Age. Meanwhile, the tombos were no longer mere document repositories, and had become potential vehicles for memory, intentionality, ideology and narrative, not only in their inception but also subsequently, by way of adding document strata or redefining their roles. We will present a short chronological framework of this process based on the information collected from the tombos that have survived, and we provide information about their physical features, their dating, their various applications throughout time, and their contents.

The topic of council cartularies, known in Portugal as “tombos”, which were used as repositories for royal or municipal deliberations, is gaining ground within Portuguese municipal diplomatics as a preferred method of understanding the projection of council autonomy, authority and identity. The law that was approved in 1431 played an important role in defining a matrix for the councils’ tombo (registry), having been improved by the experience of the previous application of the model statute granted by the magistrate João Mendes to several councils throughout the previous decade. Later on, even though the councils continued to launch their own initiatives to secure and validate copies of their documentation in a more permanent way, the royal framework, in its capacity as the sanctioning legal authority, was the dominant method used throughout the Modern Age. Meanwhile, the tombos were no longer mere document repositories, and had become potential vehicles for memory, intentionality, ideology and narrative, not only in their inception but also subsequently, by way of adding document strata or redefining their roles. Terminada mais uma fase do referido trabalho, é dado à estampa o segundo volume que contempla o período de 2 de Janeiro de 1579 a 19 de Dezembro de 1640 que corresponde, maioritariamente, ao domínio político filipino, cujo primeiro documento diz respeito a um alvará dirigido aos cidadãos de Lisboa pelo Cardeal-Rei e o último a uma lei que proibia a ida de qualquer pessoa do Reino para Castela sem licença régia, sob pena de morte (doc. n.º 59451).

Portugal in the Sea of Oman - Religion and Politics is an editorial achievement, which is unique in the Arab World. In cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Oman, the University of Aachen and the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, the publishing house Philipp von Zabern releases all official documents that have been published during the Portuguese colonial period of the Oman. These documents are historical treasures that allow an undisguised view onto this era.
The documents are presented as original scans. During the next years there will also be a transcription into Old Portuguese and a translation into English and Arabic. Thus, the sources become available for scien¡tist all over the world and a new scholarly dialogue about this essential colonial period can be opened.

This papers aims at presenting the first stages of a new research project that is being developed in Portugal on medieval and modern seals. One of the major goals of the project is to gather in a coherent and organised corpus all Portuguese seals - a task that was never undertaken. It intends to start working with the medieval secular clergy seals and embrace other groups at a later stage. For such a goal it was achieved the agreement and institutional cooperation of archives, museums and libraries in possession of the specimens and collections. Seals have been used since ancient times with the triple and important function of identifying, validating and keeping something inviolable, a function still at play nowadays. Nevertheless care for their inventorying, preservation and study have not corresponded to what is desirable and a significant number of specimens is at risk. In Portugal a recent analysis of the seals prior to 1319 from the archives of the Cathedral Chapter of Coimbra stored at the National Archive of Torre do Tombo (ANTT) points to almost 50% of missing seals and only 25% of the remaining considered to be in good condition. Given that this is one of the largest Portuguese seal collections, such numbers are an alarming indicator of the urgent need to safeguard the sigillographic heritage still existing in our country. Having in mind the rebirth and renewal of the sigillographic science that occurred a few decades ago by the hand of Michel Pastoureau who gave a new boost to the study of these “small monuments” we believe the project justifies itself.

Sigillvm is a project that aims at the inventorying, cataloguing, organising and processing of Portuguese medieval secular clergy seals that exist in various institutions holding archives, collections of separate seals, and seal matrices. The project also aims at the repackaging and assessment of seal condition through the preparation of reports that recommend conservation and restoration measures.
This scattered and unknown world of seals will be presented on a database with descriptions and images, consisting of the first step towards the creation of a national online sigillographic catalogue.
Objectives
Inventorying, cataloguing and digitalisation of Portuguese medieval ecclesiastic sigillography, which consists of the first stage towards the preparation and presentation of a national online sigillographic catalogue.

Introdução A base deste trabalho reside na análise de um conjunto de documentos inéditos que foram encontrados essencialmente em três códices, o primeiro na Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, no Rio de Janeiro, o segundo na Torre do Tombo e o terceiro na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Quanto ao primeiro, trata-se de um copiador de fi nais do século XVI e inícios do XVII, com 261 fólios, o qual, com algumas excepções, regista documentação do reinado de D. Sebastião e D. Filipe I, sobretudo cartas régias dirigidas a vários oficiais no Reino, na Índia e em África.

In 1995, the Portuguese National Archives (Torre do Tombo) bought from someone hundreds of documents belonging to the Casa de Abrantes but an inventory of such documentation was never available to researchers in the Reference Room (only the inventories related to previous acquisitions). Having bought a mimeographed copy of a list of those documents made in 1982 by Maria José Leal with a view to its acquisition by the National Archives, I share here its contents with fellow colleagues. The documents should be requested as TT, Casa de Abrantes, 2.ª parte, item x. Nevertheless, I was informed at the National Archives that not all the documents made it there, since the seller eventually decided to keep a few of them with him. The main families represented in the documentation are Silveiras, Lencastres, Vasconcelos de Esporão, Castelos Brancos, Góis, Lemos, Meneses, Sás and Valentes.
