Abordamos algunas de las relaciones entabladas por las aragonesas y aragoneses bajomedievales con sus vivos, sus muertos, sus intercesores más apreciados e incluso con la divinidad en los diversos momentos que engloban lo que Alejo de Venegas denominó en el siglo XVI como "tránsito de la muerte". Analizamos aquellos elementos que pudieron condicionar los comportamientos y las respuestas sociabilizadoras que la muerte generó en el Aragón bajomedieval: la pertenencia a un determinado grupo socioeconómico, la condición de hombre o mujer, de clérigo o laico, el marco urbano o rural donde se vive o la incidencia de la legislación a la hora de canalizar prácticas de bien morir y manifestaciones públicas de duelo y acompañamiento.
La separación del cuerpo social después de la muerte no significa que el difunto sea abandonado por los vivos. Tanto en lo físico como en lo espiritual sigue formando parte del mundo de los vivos. Porque es el mundo de los vivos, el espacio de los vivos, las relaciones sociales de los vivos, los criterios de organización de los vivos y,en definitiva, los comportamientos, acciones y creencias de los vivos los que dan forma al amplio y diverso entramado de relaciones, solidaridades y sociabilidades que entra en funcionamiento ante el hecho biológico de la muerte.""

Jews and Christians in Medieval Castile examines the changes in Jewish-Christian relations in the Iberian kingdom of Castile during the pivotal period of the reconquest and the hundred years that followed the end of its most active phase (eleventh to mid-fourteenth century). The study's focus on the Christian heartland north of the Duero River, known as Old Castile, allows for a detailed investigation of the Jews' changing relations with the area's main power players―the monarchy, the church, and the towns. In a departure from previous assessments, Soifer Irish shows that the institutional and legal norms of toleration for the Jewish minority were forged not along the military frontier with Islam, but in the north of Castile. She argues that the Jews' relationship with the Castilian monarchy was by far the most significant factor that influenced their situation in the kingdom, but also demonstrates that this relationship was inherently problematic. Although during the early centuries of Christian expansion the Jewish communities benefited from a strong royal power, after about 1250 helping maintain it proved to be costly to the Jewish communities in economic and human terms. Soifer Irish demonstrates that while some Castilian clergymen were vehemently anti-Jewish, the Castilian Church as a whole never developed a coordinated strategy on the Jews, or even showed much interest in the issue. The opposite is true about the townsmen, whose relations with their Jewish neighbors vacillated between cooperation and conflict. In the late thirteenth century, the Crown's heavy-handed tactics in enforcing the collection of outstanding debts to Jewish moneylenders led to the breakdown in the negotiations between the Jewish and Christian communities, creating a fertile ground for the formation of an anti-Jewish discourse in Castilian towns. Soifer Irish also examines the Jews' attitudes toward the various powers in the Christian society and shows that they were active players in the kingdom's politics. Jews and Christians in Medieval Castile breaks new ground in helping us understand more fully the tensions, and commonalities, between groups of different faiths in the late medieval period.

This paper aims to present some characteristics of Hispania in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages (4th-8th centuries). Search through a brief analysis of the relationship between Christianity and the Catholic Monarchy stood raise some issues and questions. We understand that Christianity has played and plays a significant role in the historical development of the Iberian countries. But in its installation and attempt to consolidation as hegemonic religion in the peninsula, faced several challenges. His alliance with the monarchy stood represented one of the ways to make stronger its dominance. In turn, the Monarchy, preserving its characteristic elective associated strongly with Christianity, giving him a theocratic character trying to raise the sovereign above the fray aristocratic,without much success. Thus, our text points to some of the paths followed by these two elements, Christianity and Monarchy at the time of the Kingdom of Toledo, proposing more reflections and ways that effectively covering them. We hope to have achieved it.

Until recently, studies in the architectural history of medieval and early modern Europe have assumed an all-male labor force on the construction site and in the related building trades.  Historical chronicles and manuscript illuminations of construction sites support this notion, purporting the total exclusion of women from this complex industry.  This chapter demonstrates the true nature of women's contribution to construction sites from the 13th to the 17th centuries in western Europe, uncovering a wide range of occupations in which they engaged: poor women hired for manual labor, women working as slaves, women working with their husbands and fathers in the building trades, widows continuing the workshops of their deceased husbands, and women supplying building materials for particular sites.  There is a history to be told of women's repeated participation in and subsequent denial from working in the building trades that echoes a theme between towns and across language barriers and indicates a common experience shared by women in this era.

The nutritional, economic and politícal importance of hunting in medieval Aragón is revealed by the development of a legal framework to legislate this activity and its survival until the middle of the 20th century. Our research on hunting in the kingdom of Aragón in the lih-15th centuries is based on the information provided by two groups of legal texts: those for local or regional areas (local charters, town letters, royal privileges, municipal statutes) and those that were applied to all the kingdom after the 13ili centory (general charters passed in the Courts). Comparative studies and the information provided by iconography, archaeology, notarial documentation and literature have permitted us to contrast, clarify and complete the development of our analysis, based on various points: 1) hunting as a natural resource whose exploitation is regulated and controlled by local and state powers; 2) hunting as an activity done from very different perspectives and with plural purposes, methods and valuations, closely related to the position of each person in the hierarchised medieval society; 3) hunting as a method of social control for sorne and of rebelliousness against the established order for poachers; and 4) the supplying and consumption of game as an indicator of diverse food cultures and systems that coexist in the same chronological and spatial framework.

Two distinctive regimes are distinguished in Spain over half a millennium. The first one (1270s–1590s) corresponds to a high land–labour ratio frontier economy, which is pastoral, trade-oriented, and led by towns. Wages and food consumption were
relatively high. Sustained per capita growth occurred from the end of the Reconquest (1264) to the Black Death (1340s) and resumed from the 1390s only broken by late fifteenth-century turmoil. A second regime (1600s–1810s) corresponds to a more
agricultural and densely populated low-wage economy which, although it grew at a pace similar to that of 1270–1600, remained at a lower level. Contrary to preindustrial western Europe, Spain achieved its highest living standards in the 1340s, not by mid-fifteenth century. Although its death toll was lower, the plague had a more damaging impact on Spain and, far from releasing non-existent demographic pressure, destroyed the equilibrium between scarce population and abundant resources.

El Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Path) is a walkway, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga, Spain. The name derives from the original name of Camino del Rey (King's Pathway), abbreviated locally to el caminito.

El Chorro ("The Cascade") is a small village located in Málaga (Andalusia) in southern Spain, near the town of Álora. It is one of the most popular rock climbing attractions in Spain as it is located next to Desfiladero de los Gaitanes ("Gorge of the Gaitanes")

The gorge runs from the outlet of the "Embalse del Gaitanejo" to "El Chorro". There are two extremely narrow sections at each end of the gorge with a wider bowl in between. In addition to the re-furbished walkway, the old Málaga-Cordoba railway line runs through the gorge in a set of tunnels and bridges.

This article investigates the manifestations of anti-Judaism that informed fifteenth-century debates over the religious and civic status of the conversos. Insurgents in Toledo supported the persecution of the conversos and their exclusion from public life by insisting on their continued Jewishness despite baptism. Documents such as the “Petition” and the “Sentencia-Estatuto” issued by the rebel regime, the “Appeal and Supplication” written by Marcos García de Mora, and the anonymous “Privilege,” show that the conversos’ opponents developed a hermeneutic of the flesh founded in a reading of the epistles of Paul and informed by their own particular historical context. This hermeneutic afforded the conversos’ opponents a theological basis for shutting certain baptized Christians out of Spanish society based on their carnal descent, weaving race into Christian theology. So useful a conceptual and rhetorical tool was anti-Judaism, however, that even converso defenders employed it as a weapon against their opponents.

The Influences of the Dominican Order in the Middle Ages

This interdisciplinary conference will explore the influences of the Dominican Order on all aspects of medieval life, encompassing the large-scale influences of the Order and the legacy of its prominent figures, as well as the impact that the Order had on those that came into contact with it.

The keynote paper will be delivered by Mary Rouse, on ‘The Vital Impact of the Dominicans on Books at the University of Paris, 1217-1350’.  The program will feature papers on the Dominican influence in England, Northern Europe, Italy, Eastern Europe, and the Byzantine world; the influence of Friars on other movements and communities; Dominican influence on architecture, art, books, music and liturgy; and influential Dominican philosophers and theologians.

Confirmed speakers are from the UK, the USA, Canada, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.  In addition, the conference will include a walking tour of medieval Oxford, and a concert of music that can be associated with the Dominican Order.

This course presents a broad survey of historical forces at work over the past 6,000 years, examining the manners in which human societies have organized themselves along categories of race, ethnicity, class, and gender to meet the challenges of the increasing human population and its demands on natural resources: thus, it examines continuity and change in societies over time, in different places, and among various peoples.

The purchase of the town of Maqueda in 1483 by Gutierre de Cárdenas, chief accountant of the Catholic Monarchs, from Alonso Carrillo de Acuña, senior guard, was related, until 1491, to the prolix negotiation of an important royal loan of sixteen million maravedís for the War of Granada. The analysis of the documentation preserved on this subject reveals the complicated process of financing, execution, repayment and cancellation of the loan with its financial intermediaries, as well as the measures to maximize its possible benefits. Likewise, the comparative study of the tax sources related to Carrillo’s loan to the Crown provides us information about the public debt in the 15th century Castilian royal estate.

In Creating Conversos, Roger Louis Martínez-Dávila skillfully unravels the complex story of Jews who converted to Catholicism in Spain between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, migrated to colonial Mexico and Bolivia during the conquest of the Americas, and assumed prominent church and government positions. Rather than acting as alienated and marginalized subjects, the conversos were able to craft new identities and strategies not just for survival but for prospering in the most adverse circumstances. Martínez-Dávila provides an extensive, elaborately detailed case study of the Carvajal–Santa María clan from its beginnings in late fourteenth-century Castile. By tracing the family ties and intermarriages of the Jewish rabbinic ha-Levi lineage of Burgos, Spain (which became the converso Santa María clan) with the Old Christian Carvajal line of Plasencia, Spain, Martínez-Dávila demonstrates the family’s changing identity, and how the monolithic notions of ethnic and religious disposition were broken down by the group and negotiated anew as they transformed themselves from marginal into mainstream characters at the center of the economies of power in the world they inhabited. They succeeded in rising to the pinnacles of power within the church hierarchy in Spain, even to the point of contesting the succession to the papacy and overseeing the Inquisitorial investigation and execution of extended family members, including Luis de Carvajal “The Younger” and most of his immediate family during the 1590s in Mexico City.

Martínez-Dávila offers a rich panorama of the many forces that shaped the emergence of modern Spain, including tax policies, rivalries among the nobility, and ecclesiastical politics. The extensive genealogical research enriches the historical reconstruction, filling in gaps and illuminating contradictions in standard contemporary narratives. His text is strengthened by many family trees that assist the reader as the threads of political and social relationships are carefully disentangled.

Its discussion of two extended and interrelated families, the Old Christian noble family of the Carvajals and the New Christian converso family of the ha-Levi/Santa Marías, breaks new ground in the exploration of the highly contested topic of the identity of the conversos in Spain in late medieval and early modern times. La Biblia Vulgata no solo fue el libro más leído en la Edad Media occidental, sin duda fue también el libro más ampliamente utilizado por los «intelectuales», que aplicaron el vocabulario y las temáticas bíblicas tanto a la literatura política como a la cronística. La narrativa en torno a la guerra santa no fue una excepción. La evidencia textual nos lleva a pensar que ciertamente existe un continuum terminológico y discursivo entre la teología de la violencia sagrada bíblica y la medieval. Más allá de sus diferentes contextos históricos de creación, la narrativa de la guerra santa, en la forma retórica ciceroniana en la que la transmitió la Vulgata latina al Medievo, no deja de ser el vehículo decisivo para la reformulación en la cristiandad latina de conceptos veterotestamentarios (si bien muy romanizados) tales como guerra santa, abominación, anatema o purificación a través del martirio en combate. En este artículo se analiza la recepción en la Chronica Adefonsi Imperatoris de esta retórica de guerra santa bíblica.

Son muchos los fondos documentales relativos a la Historia de la Ciencia, en general y en particular a la Historia de la Medicina y la Farmacia, que se encuentran inéditos en Archivos españoles. La Cátedra de Historia de la Farmacia y Legislación farmacéutica de la Universidad de Granada, inició en los años setenta un ambicioso proyecto de investigación para facilitar y promover los estudios sobre la historia de la ciencia, la medicina y particularmente de la farmacia. El equipo de investigadores no pretendía sólo realizar trabajos y Monografías personales, sino sobre todo promover y facilitar la investigación a otros, en los más diversos campos. La ayuda prestada por el personal de los archivos ha sido también valiosa y debe ser reconocida
El objetivo primario fue facilitar la investigación de la historia de la ciencia, en nuestro país, al mismo tiempo que se llamaba  la atención sobre la riqueza de los  fondos archivísticos, en estos campos.
La presente aportación  es la "Colección documental de interés histórico-farmacéutico conservados en el archivo General de Navarra". Este trabajo fué premiado, en concurso, por el Colegio de Farmacéuticos de Navarra.
Para hacer una historia es necesario disponer de fuentes adecuadas. Después vendrá el estudio, valoración e interpretación de las mismas, pero antes de nada se hace necesario una localización y catalogación de fuentes disponibles.
Dada la situación de los estudios históricos realizados sobre el pasado médico-farmacéutico en Navarra, se impone, ante todo, una labor de recapitulación y de señalización y apertura de posibles vías de investigación.
Se da a conocer abundante material documental, que abren la vía para la reconstrucción y vivificación de muchas parcelas del pasado farmacéutico en Navarra. Pero la materia no está agotada ni mucho menos. Los distintos Archivos de Pamplona, y de Navarra en general, conservan aún importantes colecciones documentales de interés histórico farmacéutico. Y esta aportación debe ser estímulo para emprender nuevas investigaciones.
Para la realización del trabajo se encontró una gran ayuda  en la "Guía del Archivo General de Navarra"  de José M. Lacarra.
De toda la documentación recogida se indica un resumen de su contenido general y fecha, junto con las siglas de localización archivística. Se han clasificado numéricamente y subdividido
siguiendo las distintas secciones del Archivo a que pertenecen.
Pero un trabajo como éste que tiende a orientar y facilitar la labor de futuros investigadores no cumpliría bien con su papel si careciese de unos índices de consulta. Estos índices son pieza fundamental del trabajo. Se ha agrupado en un sólo índice general el de materias, el topográfico y el onomástico. La sola ojeada del índice da una visión bastante precisa de los alcances y riqueza de la documentación catalogada que puede sustituir bien a cualquier comentario.
El lapso cronológico a que se extiende la documentación que va desde 1344 hasta muy entrado el siglo XIX, es otro factor más a considerar.
Por último, es de destacar que se  acompaña la reproducción de algunos documentos como ilustración. de la importancia de la documentación presentada.
Una buena parte de la documentación recopilada corresponde a la Alta Edad Media y, por regla general, son bastante escuetos por ser fundamentalmente cédulas reales ordenando pagos, y que se refieren a gastos de la Casa Real. En las cédulas suele especificarse el motivo y circunstancias del pago, por lo que a través de ellas puede seguirse no sólo la vida económica del reino, sino la política y cultural.
Físicos, Cirujanos, Especieros y Apoticarios son los personajes de nuestra acción.
¿En este periodo qué competencias tiene cada uno? ¿Cuales son sus misiones? Físicos y Cirujanos preparan y aplican por sí medicamentos. Los sueldos de los médicos, las gracias que recibían, las cuentas por medicinas y confiterías y los datos de la vida política, económica y sanitaria del reino es un panel imprescindible.
Otro gran capítulo lo constituyen los documentos relativos a la profesión farmacéutica en Navarra en los siglos XVI,XVII,XVIII y XIX.
Esta masa documental es bastante amplia y completa y consideramos de un interés fundamental. A través de ellos se puede perfilar la profesión farmacéutica en Navarra en los siglos XVI, XVII, XVIII y XIX con sus glorias y penurias y toda la serie de encuentros con los médicos por un lado, el Protomédico por otro y las mismas cofradías de médicos, cirujanos y boticarios.
El papel desempeñado por las Cortes en la evolución de la profesión farnacéutica y la opinión de la sociedad sobre el ejercicio profesional farmacéutico así como la enseñanza y visitas de boticas tienen una amplia información en este conjunto documental.
Otro bloque importante de documentos se refieren a expedientes de exámenes de Boticarios. Es otro conjunto documental de un marcado interés_ Es, tal vez, una de las colecciones de expedientes de farmacéuticos más amplia que se conservan. Se extiende prácticamente
a todo el siglo XVIII. Asimismo, se conservan un buen número del siglo XIX, pero que en este trabajo, no no se han catalogado, dejándose indicado esta vía de investigación.
Entre los documentos más relevantes transcritos están las  Ordenanzas del Conseio Real del Reyno de Navarra.  Lo relativo al  Protomédico y de su jurisdicción y de las apelaciones de sus sentencias, que es un capítulo esencial para la historia de Navarra así como lo relativo a la organización y funciones de "De los médicos, cirujanos y boticarios" •. Añadiendo  las  "Ordenanzas de los médicos, boticarios, cirujanos y barberos de la ciudad de Estella". Documento del máximo interés. Así como el "Proyecto de Ordenanzas para el régimen y gobierno de la Facultad de Farmacia del Reino de Navarra". Así como la gran masa documental relativa al Hospital General de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia de la Ciudad de Pamplona.
Todo ello como muestra y estímulo para profundizar y ampliar nuevas investigaciones en los Archivos del reino de Navarra.

Course Description From the Muslim invasion to the Spanish Inquisition, medieval Spain was the site of successive waves of invasion and conversion and witnessed extraordinary diversity. This course will examine how such momentous events and the people who implemented and experienced them transformed the Iberian Peninsula from a Roman outpost to a European superpower. In addition, we will explore how the interaction and persecution of the Peninsula's Jews, Muslims, and Christians contributed to a complex national identity and the formation of a nation-state that was very different from, yet connected to the rest of the medieval world.

This contribution examines the diplomatic and narrative sources of the Crown of Aragon in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to verify the presence in them of the idea of reconquest and with what components, characteristics and functions. The analysis focuses first on the reign of Alfonso the Troubadour (1162-1196), in connection with those of his son Pedro the Catholic (1196-1213) and his grandson Jaime I the Conqueror (1213-1276), to address later, from a peninsular perspective, the evolution of the idea of reconquest in the chronicle of the thirteenth century.

Enrico di Castiglia è un caso emblematico di cavaliere e principe alla ricerca di una signoria. Dopo aver guidato senza successo una ribellione nobiliare contro il celebre fratello Alfonso X el Sabio (1252-1284) re di Castiglia, prese la via dell’esilio. Barcellona, Londra e Tunisi furono le mete dei suoi viaggi. In Africa guadagnò grandi onori e ricchezze combattendo con i suoi cavalieri al servizio del sultano di Tunisi, che nel 1258 si era proclamato califfo. Venuto a sapere della spedizione angioina volta alla conquista del regno di Sicilia, il principe castigliano prestò la somma di 40.000 once d’oro a Carlo d’Angiò chiedendo come interesse in caso di vittoria la concessione di una signoria. La vittoria angioina di Benevento tuttavia lo lasciò a mani vuote e, dopo alcuni incontri, infruttuosi, con il papa e con Carlo d’Angiò, Enrico accettò l’elezione a senatore di Roma. Governò il comune capitolino sostenendo il “popolo” contro le aspirazioni nobiliari e angioine. Sottomise all’autorità comunale diversi centri del Patrimonium Beati Petri con la diplomazia o con la forza delle armi. Nel 1267 si schierò dalla parte di Corradino che scendeva in Italia per reclamare l’eredità paterna del regno di Sicilia, e utilizzò l’arma della propaganda politica (poesia di argomento politico, cerimonie pubbliche, laudes regiae) per sostenere la sua causa, denigrare Carlo d’Angiò e trovare nuovi alleati. Nel frattempo anche la corte papale metteva in atto una propaganda contraria al principe Enrico e favorevole a Carlo d’Angiò, in particolare con i sermoni del cardinale francese Odo da Châteauroux, che dipingeva Enrico di Castiglia, Corradino e il sultano di Babilonia come i tre spiriti immondi dell’Apocalisse e presentava invece il fratello del re di Francia come campione e difensore della Chiesa e del popolo cristiano. I due piani si intersecano in occasione della battaglia di Tagliacozzo presentata dalla propaganda di Enrico come una facile vittoria per Corradino e tutti coloro che avessero militato sotto le sue bandiere, e vissuta invece momento per momento dal cardinale francese a causa delle notizie, ora cattive, poi confuse e infine buone, che man mano arrivavano alla corte papale. Giustiziato Corradino nella pubblica piazza, Enrico fu condannato all’ergastolo. Dopo 23 anni di prigionia verrà liberato da Carlo II lo Zoppo e, tornato prima a Tunisi e poi in patria, divenne principe-reggente al trono di Castiglia-Leon per il nipotino Fernando IV.

La Gran Mezquita de Córdoba es uno de los monumentos más importantes de la civilización islámica y un famoso sitio en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial. Sin embargo, durante casi ocho siglos ha servido como la catedral de la ciudad. En tanto que otras mezquitas en la península Ibérica fueron finalmente demolidas y reemplazadas por iglesias y catedrales en algún momento posterior a la conquista
castellana, la Gran Mezquita de Córdoba sobrevivió. Fue modificada para el culto católico, en una adaptación que culminó con la inserción de un gran coro y un presbiterio (crucero) en el siglo XVI. Esto produjo una imagen curiosa y dual que ha confundido, perturbado y fascinado a los visitantes durante siglos: el edificio es una catedral, pero parece una mezquita. Tras la inserción del crucero, la estructura fue progresivamente “cristianizada”, aunque solo para ser “re-islamizada” en los siglos XIX al XX. El intento actual de la Iglesia por afianzar su control, y la resistencia que esto ha provocado entre los activistas ciudadanos, es solo el último episodio de una extraordinaria historia de 800 años.
La confrontación sobre la fábrica e interpretación del edificio testimonia la poderosa continuidad del legado arquitectónico islámico. Pero también es un barómetro del cambio de actitudes hacia el pasado
islámico, y el significado de ese mismo pasado para la cultura y la sociedad españolas.

En los modelos alimentarios que se conformaron y definieron durante los siglos medievales el pescado ocupó un lugar secundario. Apenas apreciado y consumido por gusto, su presencia en las mesas no fue fruto de la creencia en su valor gastronómico. Salvo contadas excepciones, la ingesta de pescado estuvo motivada por las imposiciones eclesiásticas y no por la libre elección de los consumidores. En los escritos de moralistas como Eiximenis o Vicente Ferrer, el pescado tuvo la exclusiva consideración de alimento de mortificación y único sustitutivo permitido a los cristianos en Cuaresma para reemplazar a la exquisita, saludable y deleitable ingesta de carne que sólo unos pocos tenían posibilidad de disfrutar. Este carácter supletorio y secundario del pescado se vio reforzado por las pautas de nutrición establecidas en los tratados médicos, que pusieron muchos reparos al consumo de un alimento de fácil contaminación y putrefacción incidiendo, ante todo, en su procedencia y preparación culinaria. A pesar de estas construcciones culturales que inciden en la consideración del pescado como alimento sustitutivo, de mortificación y sanitariamente ‘peligroso’, la demanda generada en los ayunos y abstinencias decretados por la Iglesia constituyó un buen argumento para su inclusión dentro de las políticas económicas concejiles. Sin aportar información suficiente para valorar el grado de observancia de la norma religiosa cristiana , los testimonios documentales y arqueológicos permiten constatar que el pescado estuvo presente en la dieta de los aragoneses medievales y que su abastecimiento y comercio quedaron regulados tempranamente en algunos ordenamientos legales de carácter local y/o regnícola. Ya en el siglo XV, el afianzamiento de gobiernos urbanos con una amplia autonomía política y administrativa y con una decidida tendencia a la autarquía posibilitó el desarrollo de mecanismos de intervención económica en productos alimentarios de consumo básico entre los que se incluyó el pescado. Mecanismos que intentaron garantizar el aprovisionamiento a un precio asequible mediante el control de las prácticas de autoabastecimiento en los ríos cercanos y mediante la promoción de las importaciones.

El establecimiento de la frontera entre castellanos y nazaríes en el sector de las sierras Mágina y Sur de Jaén supuso la creación de un territorio poroso en el que la actividad ganadera y las incursiones militares, y en ocasiones la comercial, fueron una constante durante el periodo bajomedieval. El control, defensa y vigilancia del espacio serrano hizo que, en los primeros momentos tras la conquista cristiana (s. XIII), la indefinición fronteriza supusiera un refuerzo del mismo con la construcción de nuevos castillos o la reconstrucción de antiguas estructuras de fortificación islámicas, tal y como fueron los casos de los castillos de Susana, Otíñar y Jamilena. Castillos cuya ubicación iba asociada a antiguos núcleos de población, cercanos a cauces de ríos o arroyos junto a los que trascurrían a pasos serranos muy propicios para las incursiones de tropas que arrasaban ambos territorios.
