A assinatura do rei D. Dinis Saul Gomes FG7 p2019 •
This study analyses the emergence of royal signatures in Portugal and their diplomatic, political and cultural meaning based on a collection of documents signed, manu propria, by King Dom Dinis (1279-1325). It further discusses the historical importance of the «Rei»’s signature as a symbol of the Portuguese monarch’s public political image in the framework of Hispanic regal representation traditions.

To look at medieval Palmela for about 400 years of history means avail ourselves to the study of circumstances and structures that accompany the historical development of the Portuguese Kingdom since its formation until dawn of the Modern world. Being a territory of the Order of Santiago, that established there its first and last monastic seat, influences the whole development of local life and that’s our starting point. It therefore matters to understand how the institutions and the people who represented themselves coorelated in Palmela and understand existing permeabilities between them, especially at the level of the local oligarchy. Simultaneously, understand the evolution of these behaviors lead us to also perceive the logics of occupation and exploitation of space, trying to be traced a geography of powers and a sociology of space. Finally, and because Palmela was not an isolated territory in the Portuguese Kingdom, we will discuss the institutional relationships established with neighboring municipalities that, in due measure, influenced the economic and social dynamics in Palmela.

Espaços e poderes na Europa urbana e medieval. Lisboa: Instituto de Estudos Medievais.
Um equilíbrio de poderes: distribuição populacional e direitos paroquiais em Coimbra (1377-1385)In 1377 King Fernando ordered the repopulation of the citadel of Coimbra, in the centre of Portugal, requiring residents of the outskirts to move inside the town walls and to rebuild derelict properties there, which were granted to them to that effect. Taken in the aftermath of the invasion of the kingdom by Castilian troops and shortly after the only Portuguese university had been transferred from Coimbra to Lisbon, this measure effected a redistribution of the population and of parochial rights and tithes, which created important jurisdictional tensions between Coimbra’s intramural and suburban parishes. Their sources of income threatened, the latter strove to obtain a regime of exception that allowed them to keep collecting their parochial rights from their former parishioners. This gave rise to several judicial conflicts with the citadel’s parishes. Building on the analysis and contextualisation of these lawsuits, this essay proposes a novel explanation of the dynamics of population distribution in fourteenth-century Coimbra. In particular, it problematizes the perception of the will of town dwellers in choosing their place of residence; the spiritual and fiscal consequences of demographic redistribution; and the intervention of lay and ecclesiastical powers in the organisation of social and private life in Coimbra.
Our study focuses on the analysis of the evolution of a territory situated south of Bragança district. We analyzed the aristocratic powers and its relationship with pre-existing communities. During the low Middle Ages, this territory is occupied by local communities overseen by the regional aristocracy. Simultaneously, the royal power will be disseminated through the creation of new communities under his tutelage. These new communities, municipalities, will surrounding the aristocratic landlords. During the reign of King Dinis, the royal power finally absorbed the existing landlords, first reducing them and then integrating them within the new administrations have created. With this king, a new manor protection replaces the old aristocracy. Now, their power and authority does not emanate tradition or lineage, but by the king. Local communities are developing and structuring the local government. The political situation led to a structural change. The royal power definitely adopts the installation of grantees landlords, as its agents. A feudal model dependent on authority and royal policy that coexists with the local authority and district council model. The land belongs to the king who gives it to him who is faithful and obedient and hires the service, but that is not alienated.
