Crowns or caps are lab made prostheses that are used to restore severely broken down teeth back into form and function.

This can increase the lifespan of a tooth, especially root canal treated teeth, which are prone to fracturing, preventing the need to remove weak teeth.

They can also be used to improve the appearance of front teeth by changing their shape and colour.

Crowns can be placed on singular teeth or individually on multiple teeth allowing you to floss them as you would normal teeth.

Improvements in materials technology has greatly improved the strength and aesthetics of crowns.

Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy, can be more brittle.

Root canal treated teeth usually also have lost extensive amounts of tooth structure.

Placing a crown on these teeth helps reduce the chance of fracture and subsdequent removal prolonging the life of the tooth.

Studies have shown that root canal treated premolars and molars that have been crowned have a longer life than those that have not.

Bridges

Bridges are an extension of crowns that are utilised to replace missing teeth.

A crown is placed on the teeth on either side of the gap with a fake tooth connecting them together.

Unlike dentures, bridges are glued to the underlying tooth so they cannot be removed.

Special cleaning techniques need to be undertaken to keep the gums and teeth supporting the bridge healthy.
