About I Am: Celine Dion

Celine Dion says she won't stop, even if fate takes away her asset - her voice. The Queen of Power Ballads, the face of high notes, the diva, through her latest documentary I Am: Celine Dion, not just takes us through the journey success, but the desperation of returning on stage and speaking with her fans.
At one point in the documentary, Dion says, "Music. I miss it a lot. But also, people. I miss them a lot." As an audience you feel the pain in her eyes beyond its moistness, seldom, leaving you choked too.
I Am: Celine Dion follows Dion's life, career, highs and lows, and more, her battle with stiff-person syndrome (SPS). Her struggle is tearjerking, but she makes sure her sadness is juxtaposed with her vibrant play with life. She's happy when she's in the studio, on the stage, in her warehouse where her costumes from every live concert and red carpet hang. As Dion takes us through her huge closet, reminiscing stories behind each attire, it's a walk through her time. She was, is and will always remain an epitome of grace, glamour and glitz.
The documentary stands out for taking us through the unfiltered, honest side of Dion, who has her fears, demons and dreams in place. Even at 56, she's childlike with her stubboness intact. As an audience, you want to laugh with her, cry with her, and feel the jitters at small achievements.
From a family of 13 siblings, to delivering her own kids, her deep love for late husband René Angélil, it's a full circle for Dion. She's fighting a scary illness. But more that, she is apologetic towards her fans for cheating on them, when she had to pop on pills before stage shows, and walk out midway because the medicines withered out and her voice started to fall during the act. What's a bigger curse for a singer than not be able to satisfy the fans? "It's not hard to do a show. It's hard to cancel a show," because for her, "being on stage is like a drug fix."
The concert scenes are goosebumps inducing. Especially when the reference goes to her iconic My Heart Will Go On. Her random mumbling and humming keeps the pace of the documentary going amid smiles and tears. The last 10 minutes are its peak. You feel the tension, you feel the agony, you feel so many emotions.
Celine Dion is fighting a war. I Am: Celine Dion is just a sneak-peek into it. For her, "a performance is bigger than the song." Making a comeback is not easy. If she returned with Love Again in 2023, it was a battle won.
Dion wraps it up with Who I am. We know she's an inspiration who "won't stop..."
I Am: Celine Dion will stream on Prime Video from June 25.
