Previewing NJPW Wrestling Dontaku Night One

njpw1972.com

The Road to Wrestling Dontaku is at an end, and we have reached the two part finale of the tour. It's the usual sort of show from New Japan, some stuff which is fallout from earlier in the tour, a couple of bits to preview night two, and closing out with a couple of big matches, most notably the delayed Nemeth-Tanahashi bout for the Global title that was set up in February. If anything on the card takes your fancy, be sure to fire up NJPWWorld at 6PM JST/10AM BST/5AM ET/2AM PT (or check it out later on demand if that's better for you). The kickoff starts 30 minutes before the scheduled show time.

Kickoff: Katsuya Murashima & Togi Makabe v Shoma Kato & Boltin Oleg

New Japan's latest Young Lions face off, each accompanied by a powerhouse. Hopefully we'll get a bit of Makabe-on-Oleg bull moose action.

Match 1: Just 5 Guys (TAKA Michinoku & DOUKI) v House of Torture (SHO & Yujiro Takahashi)

After that damn numbers game cost DOUKI the title, here's a chance for revenge against the HoT.

Match 2: Just 5 Guys (Yuya Uemura & Taichi) v United Empire (Callum Newman & Great-O-Khan)

Initially a six man, SANADA's had to drop out due to medical issues. We wish him a speedy recovery. After Uemura captured the KOPW title, this is a chance for him to build on that momentum, or a chance for GOK to stake his claim to a rematch.

Match 3: Guerillas of Destiny (Jado, El Phantasmo & Hikuleo) v TMDK (Kosei Fujita, Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls)

TMDK captured the tag titles in four way action at Windy City Riot, and defended them against the former champs earlier in the tour. They will be on the line at Resurgence, but we don't yet know who the challengers will be. If GoD want another shot, here's their chance to earn it.

Match 4: Tiger Mask & Bishamon (YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto) v Bullet Club (Taiji Ishimori, Chase Owens & KENTA)

A preview for night two's tag title clash.

Match 5: Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi & Tetsuya Naito) v War Dogs (Gedo, Drilla Moloney, Clark Connors & Gabe Kidd)

Clashes between LIJ and the War Dogs have been a big part of this tour, and the conflict will continue afterwards – at All Together Naito, Tsuji and Takagi will take on Finlay, Kidd and NOAH's Jake Lee (who is still eager to get his hands on Naito despite his defeat in Hiroshima), and at Resurgence Naito and Tsuji will take on Finlay and KENTA in a teag team match, playa. This will also be a preview of night two's NEVER title clash between Takagi and Kidd.

Match 6: El Desperado, Shota Umino & Jon Moxley v House of Torture (Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Ren Narita & EVIL)

The world champion, Jon Moxley, is fresh off his first defence, over Will Hobbs, and this is a preview of his second – against Ren Narita. It's also a chance for Umino to build momentum ahead of his challenge at Resurgence, and for Desperado and Kanemaru to build momentum for the upcoming BOSJ tournament.

Match 7: NJPW World TV Championship

Zack Sabre Jr (c) v Jeff Cobb

The TV title is defended in matches with a fifteen minute time limit. Given this, one might suppose that time limit draws were relatively common, but so far only one man has gone the distance – Jeff Cobb. Hawaiian Jeffrey was able to follow this up with a victory over Sabre in last year's G1 Climax, but fell short in a second challenge. Since then the title has gone from Sabre to Tanahashi, to Matt Riddle, back to Sabre. Will Mr Athletic be able to claim the title that has eluded him, or will Sabre move to V1?

Match 8: Yota Tsuji v David Finlay

Yota Tsuji won this year's New Japan Cup, but in David Finlay's mind it should have been him, as he was pulled from the Cup due to illness, and it was this unfortunate twist of fate that opened the way for Yota's victory. Tsuji then went on to lose to Naito – in Finlay's mind, squandering the opportunity of a lifetime, and an opportunity that rightfully belonged to the Rebel. That led to Finlay confronting Tsuji backstage following the loss to berate him for his failure. A win for either man here could easily position them for bigger things at Dominion and beyond – but first and foremost, this about these two settling a personal grudge.

Match 9: IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship

Nic Nemeth (c) v Hiroshi Tanahashi

Nic Nemeth has a lot of respect for President Ace, and it was that respect that led to him issuing a challenge to Tanahashi for Nemeth's newly won Global title. An injury to Tana delayed that clash, but it's happening now. Nemeth has already overcome David Finlay to win the title and Tomohiro Ishii in non-title action, and he's eager to test himself against some of the best going to prove that can hang with anyone.

Tanahashi, for his part, is always eager to prove he's still got it. His recent TV title reign might not have been as long as he would have liked, but he was still able to dethrone Zack Sabre Jr after a year of dominance, and his last trios title run was only ended when the belts were vacated due to Okada leaving the company. Holding the gold once more, this time alongside Oleg and Yano, the Ace will want to supplement it with singles gold too. If Nemeth can't rise to the challenge, Tanahashi once again being a double champion is a very realistic possibility. Look past this man at your peril.

That's the show. Hopefully something here takes your fancy - if not, night two is only 24 hours later, with three more title matches including Jon Moxley's second defence of the World Championship.
