RfC regarding "Interlinking of accounts involved with paid editing to decrease impersonation"

There is currently a RfC open on Meta regarding "requiring those involved with paid editing on Wikipedia to link on their user page to all other active accounts through which they advertise paid Wikipedia editing business."

Note this is to apply to Wikipedia and not necessarily other sister projects, this is only to apply to websites where people are specifically advertising that they will edit Wikipedia for pay and not any other personal, professional, or social media accounts a person may have.

Please comment on meta. Thanks. Send on behalf of User:Doc James.

New user group for editing sitewide CSS / JS

Editing of sitewide CSS/JS is only possible for interface administrators from now

(Please help translate to your language)

Hi all,

as announced previously, permission handling for CSS/JS pages has changed: only members of the interface-admin (സമ്പർക്കമുഖ കാര്യനിർവാഹകർ) group, and a few highly privileged global groups such as stewards, can edit CSS/JS pages that they do not own (that is, any page ending with .css or .js that is either in the MediaWiki: namespace or is another user's user subpage). This is done to improve the security of readers and editors of Wikimedia projects. More information is available at Creation of separate user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS. If you encounter any unexpected problems, please contact me or file a bug.

Thanks!

Mobile visual editor test

Please help translate to your language.

Hello all,

The mw:Editing team has been improving the mw:Mobile visual editor. They would like to test it here. The purpose of the test is to learn which editor is better for new contributors. This is a great opportunity for your wiki to learn the same. This is an easy test that requires no work from you. You can read more about it at mw:VisualEditor on mobile/VE mobile default.

What? The test compares the mobile visual editor and the mobile wikitext editor, for newer registered editors (<100 edits).

Who? Half the people who edit from the mobile site will start in the mobile visual editor. The other half will start in the mobile wikitext editor. Remember: Most editors are not using the mobile site and will not be affected by this test. Also, users can switch at any time, and their changes will be automatically remembered and respected. If you have already tried the mobile visual editor, your preference is already recorded and will be respected.

When? The test will start soon, during June. The test will take about six weeks. (Then it will take a few weeks to write the report.)

Why? This test will help the team recommend initial preference settings. It will help them learn whether different wikis should have different settings.

Screenshot showing a drop-down menu for switching editing tools
Switching editing tools is quick and easy on mobile.

How can I switch? It's easy to switch editing environments on the mobile site.

  1. Go to the mobile site, e.g., https://test.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random or https://ml.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
  2. Open any page to edit (click the pencil icon).
  3. Click the new pencil icon to switch editing modes.
  4. Choose either "കണ്ടുതിരുത്തൽ സൗകര്യം" or "മൂലരൂപം തിരുത്തൽ" from the menu.
  5. Done! You can do the same thing to switch back at any time.

If you have any questions, please leave a note at mw:Talk:VisualEditor on mobile/VE mobile default. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (സംവാദം) 22:13, 31 മേയ് 2019 (UTC)[മറുപടി]

Movement Learning and Leadership Development Project

Hello

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Development team is seeking to learn more about the way volunteers learn and develop into the many different roles that exist in the movement. Our goal is to build a movement informed framework that provides shared clarity and outlines accessible pathways on how to grow and develop skills within the movement. To this end, we are looking to speak with you, our community to learn about your journey as a Wikimedia volunteer. Whether you joined yesterday or have been here from the very start, we want to hear about the many ways volunteers join and contribute to our movement.

To learn more about the project, please visit the Meta page. If you are interested in participating in the project, please complete this simple Google form. Although we may not be able to speak to everyone who expresses interest, we encourage you to complete this short form if you are interested in participating!

Additional interface for edit conflicts on talk pages

Sorry, for writing this text in English. If you could help to translate it, it would be appreciated.

You might know the new interface for edit conflicts (currently a beta feature). Now, Wikimedia Germany is designing an additional interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. This interface is shown to you when you write on a discussion page and another person writes a discussion post in the same line and saves it before you do. With this additional editing conflict interface you can adjust the order of the comments and edit your comment. We are inviting everyone to have a look at the planned feature. Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes[1] between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. To discuss this, you are invited to a community meeting that is being organized on March 12 from 8 pm to 10 pm, and the meeting link to join is https://meet.google.com/umc-attq-kdt. You can add this meeting to your Google Calendar by clicking here[2]. Please ping me if you have any questions. Thank you, --KCVelaga (WMF) (സംവാദം) 10:57, 8 മാർച്ച് 2021 (UTC)[മറുപടി]

Universal Code of Conduct – 2021 consultations

Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2

Please help translate to your language

The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a universal baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire Wikimedia movement and all its projects. The project is currently in Phase 2, outlining clear enforcement pathways. You can read more about the whole project on its project page.

Drafting Committee: Call for applications

The Wikimedia Foundation is recruiting volunteers to join a committee to draft how to make the code enforceable. Volunteers on the committee will commit between 2 and 6 hours per week from late April through July and again in October and November. It is important that the committee be diverse and inclusive, and have a range of experiences, including both experienced users and newcomers, and those who have received or responded to, as well as those who have been falsely accused of harassment.

To apply and learn more about the process, see Universal Code of Conduct/Drafting committee.

2021 community consultations: Notice and call for volunteers / translators

From 5 April – 5 May 2021 there will be conversations on many Wikimedia projects about how to enforce the UCoC. We are looking for volunteers to translate key material, as well as to help host consultations on their own languages or projects using suggested key questions. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these roles, please contact us in whatever language you are most comfortable.

To learn more about this work and other conversations taking place, see Universal Code of Conduct/2021 consultations.

Enabling Section Translation: a new mobile translation experience

Hello Malayalam Wikipedians!
Apologies as this message is not in your native language, Please help translate to your language.

The WMF Language team is pleased to let you know that we will like to enable the Section translation tool in Malayalam Wikipedia. For this, our team will love you to read about the tool and test it so you can:

  • Give us your feedback
  • Ask us questions
  • Tell us how to improve it.

Below is background information about Section translation, why we have chosen your community, and how to test it.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation. The WMF Language team enabled the early version of the tool in February in Bengali Wikipedia and we have enabled it in five other languages.. Through their feedback, the tool was improved and ready for your community to test and help us with feedback to make it better.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

  • Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones.
  • Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.

Malayalam Wikipedia seems an ideal candidate to enjoy this new tool since data shows significant mobile editing activity.

We plan to enable the tool on Malayalam Wikipedia in the coming weeks. After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tool and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have in any of the following formats:

Try the tool

Before the enablement, you can try the current implementation of the tool in our testing instance. Once it is enabled on Malayalam Wikipedia, you’ll have access to https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation with your mobile device. You can select an article to translate, and machine translation will be provided as a starting point for editors to improve.

Provide feedback

Please provide feedback about Section translation in any of the formats you are most comfortable with. We want to hear about your impressions on:

  • The tool
  • What you think about our plans to enable it
  • Your ideas for improving the tool.

Thanks, and we look forward to your feedback and questions.

PS: Sending your feedback or questions in English is particularly appreciated. But, you can still send them in the language of your choice.

UOzurumba (WMF) (സംവാദം) 01:43, 25 നവംബർ 2021 (UTC) On behalf of the WMF Language team.[മറുപടി]

Section Translation tool enabled in Malayalam Wikipedia

Hello Malayalam Wikipedians!

The Language team is pleased to let you know that the Section Translation tool is now enabled in Malayalam Wikipedia. It means you can translate real content one section at a time using your mobile devices with ease.

Now you can also start translating an article on your mobile device when you notice it is missing in Malayalam. From a Wikipedia article in any language, switch languages and search for Malayalam. If the article does not exist, an option to translate it will appear, as shown in the image below.

Image of the entry point

We have enabled this tool in your Wikipedia after communicating our intentions to enable it. This tool will be useful for your community since data shows significant mobile device activity in Malayalam Wikipedia.

Content created with the tool will be marked with the “sectiontranslation” tag for the community to review. We’ll monitor the content created, but we are very interested in hearing about your experience using the tool and reviewing the content created with it.

So, enjoy the tool and provide feedback on improving it.

Thank you!

Upcoming Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

The Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.

While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:

  • What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging communities among the Board?
  • What involvement should candidates have during the election?

While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates to consider and prepare ideas on the confirmed questions before the call opens. We apologize for not having a complete list of questions at this time. The list of questions should only grow by one or two questions. The intention is to not overwhelm the community with requests, but provide notice and welcome feedback on these important questions.

Do you want to help organize local conversation during this Call?

Contact the Movement Strategy and Governance team on Meta, on Telegram, or via email at msg(_AT_)wikimedia.org.

Reach out if you have any questions or concerns. The Movement Strategy and Governance team will be minimally staffed until January 3. Please excuse any delayed response during this time. We also recognize some community members and affiliates are offline during the December holidays. We apologize if our message has reached you while you are on holiday.

Best,

Movement Strategy and Governance

Join the South Asia / ESEAP Annual Plan Meeting with Maryana Iskander

Dear community members,

In continuation of Maryana Iskander's listening tour, the Movement Communications and Movement Strategy and Governance teams invite you to discuss the 2022-23 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan.

The conversations are about these questions:

  • The 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy sets a direction toward "knowledge as a service" and "knowledge equity". The Wikimedia Foundation wants to plan according to these two goals. How do you think the Wikimedia Foundation should apply them to our work?
  • The Wikimedia Foundation continues to explore better ways of working at a regional level. We have increased our regional focus in areas like grants, new features, and community conversations. How can we improve?
  • Anyone can contribute to the Movement Strategy process. We want to know about your activities, ideas, requests, and lessons learned. How can the Wikimedia Foundation better support the volunteers and affiliates working in Movement Strategy activities?

Date and Time

The meeting will happen via Zoom on 24 April (Sunday) at 07:00 UTC (local time). Kindly add the event to your calendar. Live interpretation will be available for some languages.

With the help of Election Volunteers we were able to increase outreach and participation in the election by 1,753 voters over 2017. Overall turnout was 10.13%, 1.1 percentage points more, and 214 wikis were represented in the election.

There were a total of 74 wikis that did not participate in 2017 that produced voters in the 2021 election. Can you help increase the participation even more?

Election volunteers will help in the following areas:

  • Translate short messages and announce the ongoing election process in community channels
  • Optional: Monitor community channels for community comments and questions

Volunteers should:

  • Maintain the friendly space policy during conversations and events
  • Present the guidelines and voting information to the community in a neutral manner

Do you want to be an election volunteer and ensure your community is represented in the vote? Sign up here to receive updates. You can use the talk page for questions about translation.

Propose statements for the 2022 Election Compass

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hi all,

Community members are invited to propose statements to use in the Election Compass for the 2022 Board of Trustees election.

An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/neutral/disagree). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.

Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:

  • July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
  • July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
  • July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements
  • August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
  • August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
  • August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision

The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August. The Elections Committee will oversee the process, supported by the Movement Strategy and Governance (MSG) team. MSG will check that the questions are clear, there are no duplicates, no typos, and so on.

Regards,

Movement Strategy & Governance

Delay of Board of Trustees Election

Dear community members,

I am reaching out to you today with an update about the timing of the voting for the Board of Trustees election.

As many of you are already aware, this year we are offering an Election Compass to help voters identify the alignment of candidates on some key topics. Several candidates requested an extension of the character limitation on their responses expanding on their positions, and the Elections Committee felt their reasoning was consistent with the goals of a fair and equitable election process.

To ensure that the longer statements can be translated in time for the election, the Elections Committee and Board Selection Task Force decided to delay the opening of the Board of Trustees election by one week - a time proposed as ideal by staff working to support the election.

Although it is not expected that everyone will want to use the Election Compass to inform their voting decision, the Elections Committee felt it was more appropriate to open the voting period with essential translations for community members across languages to use if they wish to make this important decision.

The voting will open on August 23 at 00:00 UTC and close on September 6 at 23:59 UTC.

Best regards,

Matanya, on behalf of the Elections Committee

Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello everyone,

The Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines Revisions committee is requesting comments regarding the Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period will be open from 8 September 2022 until 8 October 2022.

The Committee collaborated to revise these draft guidelines based on input gathered from the community discussion period from May through July, as well as the community vote that concluded in March 2022. The revisions are focused on the following four areas:

  1. To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the UCoC training;
  2. To simplify the language for more accessible translation and comprehension by non-experts;
  3. To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
  4. To review the balancing of the privacy of the accuser and the accused

The Committee requests comments and suggestions about these revisions by 8 October 2022. From there, the Revisions Committee anticipates further revising the guidelines based on community input.

Find the Revised Guidelines on Meta, and a comparison page in some languages.

Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the Revisions Guideline Talk Page. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during conversation hours. There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines.

Conversation hours

The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations. Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.

~ On behalf of the UCoC project team.
