Swipe Left, Trick!

The burgeoning story between Trick Williams and Lash Legend has the potential to derail WWE's breakout star.

There's little doubt Trick Williams has something special going on in NXT. The new champion, having vanquished Carmelo Hayes after betrayal and then defeating Ilya Dragonov for the territory's heavyweight championship, has put him in an enviable spot in the Performance Center as the brand's newest "it" guy.

There's something different about Trick. For everything he hasn't quite gotten in the ring, he makes up for it exponentially with a natural delivery and a wink and a nod. I know, bruh. You'd do the same thing if you could. Guess what? You can't!

Lash Legend is a special athlete. Being the last pick of the WNBA draft is not the same as the last pick of the NFL draft, where Mr. Irrelevant can become Brock Purdy and your starting quarterback. As an all SEC guard her last year in college, playing guard alongside Sue Bird would be pretty cool for a humble, just glad to be here athlete.

That's never been Lash Legend. Auriel Howard, having just turned 27 on May 6th, recognized the sense of urgency surrounding NXT and the changes that happen around WrestleMania. Four years of television time, and only an occasional feud with Nikkita Lyons to show for it. Injuries on both ends thwarted matchups, and it eventually just went away.

Jakari Jackson has a bit more rope to play with, but they both need screen time to develop. MetaFour is a brilliant mess of comedy and wrestling ability. Noam Dar has lasted in the WWE machine longer than most, based on his size and heat-drawing accent. It gets Legend regular TV time, in much better spot than her original talk show. Dar had a run on Smackdown years ago, Jackson is getting comfortable, and Mensah is a unanimous choice for first person to die in any horror movie, ever. Long term prospects in this particular quartet DOA somewhere around the fall. Hedging your bet is not the worst idea for Legend.

The chemistry between Trick and Lash is amazing. The moments they are interacting might be the best thing in NXT as a whole; they are almost too natural. It makes too much sense for them to be on the screen together as often as possible, except...

It makes no sense for Trick.

Professionally, it's a good idea for Legend to attach herself to the Williams story. Most of the women Lash works with in the ring are dwarfed by her near six foot frame. It makes it harder to show workrate when you have to hold back that much more. Jakari has came along quicker, but is still green, too. Relevance is important, regardless of level within the hierarchy. Finding an excuse to have a story with the new, good looking champion can definitely have benefits.

Unfortunately, only for Lash.

There's not much of a history of long-term hero couples in professional wrestling. There are moments of bliss coupled with snake bites, jealous exes and ruined pastries. Think Tully Blanchard, Dusty Rhodes and Baby Doll. Great heat for a month or two and great chemistry, but umm...

Trick can't fall for the pitfalls, even in kayfabe. Right now, he's one of the most over stars on any brand. To allow the focus to come off of him as he ascends would throw everything off. He's a basketball player dominating Rucker Park as far as WWE is concerned, and the stories that come from that reflection explains why it's important Trick focuses on being Trick, and not turning them. This is not Sherri Martel, yet. Is a romantic angle really what you need as a newly crowned face of the brand?
