Legacy of 1804 with Dr. Gina Ulysse #LOF1804 #Haiti

Join me tonight at 9PM as I welcome anthropologist  Gina Ulysse to discuss her new book "Why Haiti Needs New Narratives." Dr. Ulysse will be reading from the book on Saturday at the Brooklyn Public Library. Find out more here.

On tonight's show she and I will chat it up on the mainstream U.S. press' handling of Ati Max Beauvoir's recent passing, including the pervasive use of the word V O O D O O to designate Vodou. Dr. Ulysse is one of many academics who have fought for the Library of Congress to stop the use of that spelling of the word given its association with Hollywood fantasies and racist caricatures of Haitians' ancestral spirituality.

We will also discuss Dr. Ulysse's recent pieces on racism in the Unites States and the #BlackLivesMatter movement for the blog Africa is a Country.

I also hope to talk about her choice to and the process of publishing her book in French, English and Kreyòl, all languages spoken by Haitians.

Dr. Ulysse is Professor of Anthropology at Wesleyan University.

UPDATE: SHOW AUDIO

We had tons of fun discussing Lang Kreyòl Nou with Dr. Doucet in English and of course Kreyòl. We discussed the Akademi Kreyòl as well as the appointment of Haitians to Francophonia Institutions such as the Académie Française. We also discussed the importance of orality and of repertorying Haitian oral traditions such as sacred and folks songs in teaching Kreyòl. I posted various Kreyòl learning resources offered by Haitians on my Twitter feed at #lof1804, including resources for children for those in the NY area.

There was a rich Q&A so thanks to Hans Roy and Katleen Félix for their engagement!

Dr. Doucet was with us for an hour and in the second hour, Hans and Katleen offered great updates and compared notes on topics as varied as Katleen's Diaspora Investment Survey, this week's news including the unfortunate renewal of MINUSTAH, upcoming events such as a livestream with survey results which Katleen is preparing in Chicago and the HCX Ann Pale with Manbo Dowoti coming up this week. An all around great show and meeting of the minds!

Depending on where you live, hope to see you at the various Selebrasyon Lang Kreyòl taking place in NY and Massachussets next weekend! Kreyòl Pale, Kreyòl Konprann!

Legacy of 1804 on Digicel Blocks VoIPs in the Caribbean #Haiti #LOF1804 #netneutrality

Digicel has blocked VoIP access (Viber, Tango etc) in Haiti, Trinidad and Jamaica. Other cell phone carriers such as Lime have done so as well. This has generated a firestorm on Caribbean social media, at least one petition and a reaction by the Trinidadian Telecom regulatory body which reinstated VoIPs in Trinidad while it deliberates the issue.

Join me in my capacity as LOF1804 weekly host and head of  the Americas Desk  at Internet Without Borders this Friday July 11 at 9PM EA as I welcome:

For more background on the issue:

Listen live at http://tobtr.com/s/6670679 or on the phone at 323-927-2913.

You can listen to past shows at http://www.kiskeacity.com/search/label/LOF1804 or by searching "Legacy of 1804" or subscribing to the Black Whole Radio feed in iTunes.

UPDATE 1:

We have a new show link because of technical difficulties:
I'm broadcasting live on the air! Listen in now at http://tobtr.com/s/6670679. #BlogTalkRadio #lof1804 #digicel #VoIPs

UPDATE 2 (SHOW AUDIO):

UPDATE 3 - HIGHLIGHTS:

Speakers gave us an update of where things stand in their respective jurisdictions. In Trinidad services have been restored while TATT deliberates. In Haiti and Jamaica, applications are still blocked.

Pascal Antoine pointed out that Digicel's competitor NatCom has not blocked VoIPs.

Panelists answered the following questions and more:

Why have Haiti's Conatel and its Jamaican equivalent still not pronounced themselves on the VoIP block?
Why are cell phone providers doing this block now?
Have workaround applications to the block surfaced in the Caribbean?
How long have cell phone providers wanted to block VoIPs? According to Michele Marius this is just the latest development in a long battle between carriers and VoIPs.
Is this a dangerous precedent for net neutrality in the region and globally? What if Digicel decides it wants to block an app by a Haitian congressional candidate it does not like?
What is the state of Caribbean innovation?

Legacy of 1804 with Gary Dauphin #LOF1804 #netneutrality

Join me this Friday at 9PM as Gary Dauphin  and I discuss the potential negative impact of recent net neutrality rulings on the vibrant web of Haitian online media from blogs to radio. See the story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=312794429. The main concern is that a proposed FCC rule will give media giants priority "pay to play" faster speed access to users.

Gary Dauphin is a Los Angeles-based digital media manager and writer. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of annenberg.usc.edu, at USC's Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism.
Gary's writing has appeared in Bidoun, Essence, Interview, Lacanian Ink, The Root.com, Vibe magazine, the Village Voice, and other print and online publications. He has also held a number of senior positions at leading African American-market websites, including founding Director and Editor-in-Chief of AOL Black Voices, Editor-in-Chief of Africana.com and Editor-in-Chief and Site Manager of BlackPlanet.com. He also worked extensively in public radio and television, and was Vice President, Digital at KCETLink, the nation's largest independent public television station. He also maintains a consulting practice where he assists organizations with technical and strategic issues around online community, ethnicity, and editorial programming.

Gary was born and raised in New York City to Haitian parents, and studied film theory at Yale University. You can always find him on Twitter.
