=12ptHi all,
I wanted a profile evaluation for my M7 MBA application for 2026 intake.
A bit about my background-
Age - 25, Male
Undergrad - B. Tech. Electrical engineering IIT Madras, CGPA 7.9 (it’s a bit low, as our department grades harshly)( JEE Main AIR- 9)
I’m currently working on GMAT prep, giving it in Nov this year, targeting 760+ (will not apply before that)

=12ptProfessional experience –

=12ptSenior Data Scientist, Mastercard AI Garage

=12pt
I have been working since Aug 2020, Got 2 promotions, Associate Specialist- Data Scientist II- Senior Data Scientist

=12ptI am currently involved in developing various AI Models as a part of real-time Acquirer Risk Management Solution, estimated to generate an annual revenue of ~120 million. I am also involved in ideating new products, from ideation to development to final production(in the pipeline, due to reorgs).
=12ptI have also developed end to end generative AI based( back in GPT 2 days xD) solutions which saved 100+hours for business analysts. Also, worked in developing two fraud based products for major financial institutions.
=12ptI have won AI Excellence award in the company for Q1 2023 and also secured 3rd in our internal hackathon.

=12ptI also have 3 patents filed currently in my name(in the process of filing more) and have actively worked on research projects and published 3 papers in top conferences( aiming for more this year, with one being in an AI in Finance domain).I also am involved in Research collaborations with top institutes like MIT and IITD

=12ptI have also cleared CFA L3(L1 and L2 above 90percentile) as I have always been interested in Finance( Main reason for choosing Mastercard too as I have always been interested in the FinTech space)

=12ptI have also delivered many talks on AI, in Kaggle Days meetup,Analytics Vidhya Data Hour and Mastercard podcast. Also, got the wonderful opportunity to deliver a guest lecture on AI in AML in Said Business School, Oxford

=12ptCurrently writing a book chapter on AI in counter terrorism for an ethics in AI  to be published in Dec 2024( tentative)

=12ptI also interned at Fidelity Investments, which sparked my interest in the intersection between finance and data science ( and hence the CFA and Mastercard, and I know MC isn’t exactly fin fin, but I wanted to get a flavour of the fintech ecosystem)

=12ptI have also interned in IIMA, where I was working on optimizing and developing new algorithms for Mobile P2P communication. Also, interned in an edtech startup Bitwise, in my second year, where I primarily worked on adaptive learning algorithms to teach children better.

=12ptExtra Curriculars
=12ptCurrently, just started working on a community library project, which is a community library with a heavy emphasis on equality and inclusion( Reading has always been my hobby)
I lead the off the cubicles team, which is involved in organizing various activities like sports week etc to encourage bonding between the team.
=12ptAlso a part of the Design, Branding and communications team where we work on various initiatives showcasing AIG like women in Data science conferences, podcast  and career sessions Linkedin posts, website, in office branding,
=12ptI was a part of the main organizing committee for the professional shows in Shaastra, the tech Fest in IITM
=12ptAlso, was a part of music club team in IITM where we organized various music events in our cultural fest Saarang.
=12ptLed an NSS project, where I organized a team of 10, for mentoring underprivileged children and also Volunteered at Suyam project, which is an NGO for underprivileged girls working on JEE and 12th std prep.
In School, I always used to actively participate in quizzing, and won a National quiz hosted by times of India, which gave me the opportunity to visit NASA centre. Always have secured podium positions in multiple quizzes on various topics like Math, Mythology and General(I know its weird xD)

My specific questions are -
I know my GPA is low (relative grading pains:- never was a fan of electrical engineering until last year, where I had the freedom to choose more math and AI courses)

=12ptI think i can make up for it with my GMAT score( Always been good at test taking)
=12pt1.I know I have the typical Indian IT male profile,I am not sure how much the research and CFA will help me stand out
2. How critical is this low GPA? will it be a dealbreaker for some schools even with a higher GMAT score?
=12pt3. I feel like my extracurriculars are a bit weak, thinking of working on more initiatives
=12pt4. Wharton has always been my dream school, and I have never been more sure especially after coming to know they offer a finance+Analytics( ML is literally analytics on steroids so), I feel like it would be a good fit for my future goals. Is this realistic considering how selective Wharton is?
4. If yes, which out of the M7s(Columbia, Booth, MIT) are definitely in reach?

Hello raysabre18,

Thanks for writing in.

To answer your questions specifically: The low GPA is a red flag; however, with a stellar GMAT score, you will be able to offset it; moreover, since it was the marking system that was stringent, you can always go ahead with a WES evaluation as that may yield a healthier GPA. Lastly, of course, please use the Optional Essay well to discuss this (if the school provides for the same).

Yes, your extra-curricular engagements are not outstanding; however, with a set of essays that are compelling (and make you stand out) and career goals that are logical (and align with your CFA qualification as well as your existing experience), you will have a good chance.

What you need to remember with any M7 program is that your chances will be slim (as they will be for any candidate from an overrepresented background). You only need tio give this your best shot, and, very importantly, balance your risk out by applying to a couple of US top ~15 schools as well. One can never be sure with M7 programs (even when you have a stellar profile in palce).

Hope this helps.

All the best!

1.I know I have the typical Indian IT male profile,I am not sure how much the research and CFA will help me stand out

You have a very strong profile, considering that you did so well in the technology-based projects as well as passing the CFA levels. That really speaks for your IIT qualification. But there are areas that need to be deliberately addressed from your side.

Regarding the question of the value of the CFA, find out how the CFA has helped you look at and evaluate your recent professional engagements with a critical eye. If you fail to bring in this perspective, then the CFA will not help you stand out from the crowd. You do not want to appear as just another IITian who has amassed patents, research papers and financial certifications. First, be clear about the story you want to tell and your goals in life, and then show how everything you have done recently is a step toward achieving that goal.

If you are serious about the M7s, you have a big gap in terms of community initiatives. As an IT professional and borderline finance professional, the cultural narrative is against you. It's also important to demonstrate balanced right brain thinking and a search for meaning beyond the numbers. Read how

The GPA isnt very impressive, but its not the end of the world, especially with that IIT pedigree and CFA level 3. You shouldnt kill yourself over it and rather focus on other areas. Hopen you find this useful

If you are so passionate about this area at the intersection of the two,k it only makes you a more desirable candidate.

4. If yes, which out of the M7s(Columbia, Booth, MIT) are definitely in reach?
I would bet on Booth and Columbia although MIT isnt far.
