A farmer used 1,034 acres of land for beans, wheat, and corn in the ra [#permalink]

A farmer used 1,034 acres of land for beans, wheat, and corn in the ratio of 5 : 2 : 4, respectively. How many acres were used for corn?

(A) 188
(B) 258
(C) 376
(D) 470
(E) 517

5 part B
2 part W
4 part C
total 11 parts for 1034 Acres
So 1 part = 1034/11 = 94 Acres
Corn = 4 parts = 4 * 94 = 376 Acres

Hi All,

I mentioned in my original post that there were a variety of ways that you could do the math. By converting the math to decimal format, and using the answer choices as reference, you can actually avoid a lot of calculations altogether.

Since corn represents 4/11 of the total crops, we have 4/11 = .3636 repeating

Since the total (acres) is just a little over 1,000, we can estimate the answer....

1,000(.3636) = about 363

Since we rounded down, we're looking for an answer that's a little bigger than 363 - there's only one answer that matches.

Final Answer:

A farmer used 1,034 acres of land for beans, wheat, and corn in the ra [#permalink]
consider 5x acres of land used for bean
consider 2x acres of land used for wheat
consider 4x acres of land used for corn
Total given is 1034 acres
11x =1034
x = 94
land used for corn = 4 * 94 = 376
correct option - C

Alternate solution
As we know that ratios have a common factor shared between them, we can directly consider
\(\frac{4}{11}\) * 1034 = 376 acres
correct option - C
