Re: A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sol [#permalink]
Let total books = x

Sold \(= \frac{2x}{3}\)

Remaining\(= \frac{x}{3} = 36\)

x = 108

Amount obtained \(= 2 * \frac{108}{3} * 2.5\)

= 180

Answer = A

Re: A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sol [#permalink]
The total number of books: x. Rewrite 2.50 as 5/2. The question asks for: 2x/3 * 5/2 = 5x/3.

The number of unsold books: x/3 = 36, x = 36*3. So 36*3 * (5/3) = 180. The answer is A.

A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sold for $2.50 each. If none of the 36 remaining books were sold, what was the total amount received for the books that were sold?

A) $180
B) $135
C) $90
D) $60
E) $54

Let total number of books be X.
\(\frac{2}{3}\) books were sold.
36 remaining books were not sold. Therefore \(\frac{1}{3}\) of X books were not sold.
\(\frac{1}{3}\) * X = 36
X = 108
\(\frac{2}{3}\) x 108 = 72
72 books were sold for $2.50 each.
Total amount received for the books that were sold = 72 x 2.50 = $180

A) $180
B) $135
C) $90
D) $60
E) $54

We have -
Quote:
A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sold .............If none of the 36 remaining books were sold............

So, 1/3 represents 36

So, the total no of books is \(36*3 = 108\) books

Quote:
A collection of books went on sale, and \(\frac{2}{3}\) of them were sold for $\(2.50\) each.

Revenue generated is \(\frac{2}{3}*108*2.50 = 180\)

Thus, answer must be (A) 180

Since 2/3 of the books were sold, 1/3 were not sold. Since 36 books were not sold, we can create the following equation in which x = the total number of books.

(1/3)x = 36

x = 108

Thus, (2/3)(108) = 72 books were sold. Since each book was sold for $2.50, a total of 72 x 2.5 = $180 was made on the sale of the books.

A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were [#permalink]
OFFICIAL GMAT EXPLANATION

Since 2/3 of the books in the collection were sold, 1/3 were not sold. The 36 unsold books represent 1/3 of the total number of books in the collection, and 2/3 of the total number of books equals 2(36) or 72. The total proceeds of the sale was 72($2.50) or $180. The best answer is therefore A.

Sold: \(\frac{2}{3}\). Therefore, unsold were \(\frac{1}{3}\) * Total which are 36

Total books: 3 * 36 = 108

Sold: \(\frac{2}{3}\) * 108 = 72

Each price: $2.50

Overall price: 72 * 2.50 = 180
