Explanation

4. The author would be most likely to agree with which one of the following statements?

Difficulty Level: 600

Explanation

The correct answer will be the statement that is best supported by evidence within the passage text.

A. No. While the author refutes the strict constructionist view by providing evidence of exceptions, he or she does not claim that those exceptions account for the majority of traits in existing species.

B. Yes. In the fourth paragraph, the author discusses that the success of small mammals in the Cretaceous period was a result of “dumb luck” rather than adaptation to environment.

C. No. The author discusses in the third paragraph many neutral, non-adaptive mutations persist from one generation to the next but are not explainable by natural
selection.

D. No. Watch out for deceptive language. The author claims that smaller species are generally better able to survive catastrophic climate changes, but catastrophic changes are not the same thing as harsh environmental conditions.

E. No. The author defines natural selection as generally held to shape both form and behavior.

6. Which one of the following most accurately and completely describes the function of the second paragraph of the passage?

(A) It outlines the objections to traditional evolutionary theory raised by the strict constructionists mentioned in the first paragraph. - "raised by the strict constructionists mentioned in the first paragraph" modifies objections. The paragraph is not at all doing this; instead, it talks about, the strict constructionists' own views on natural selection, asserting that they believe it to be responsible for every aspect of species’ form, behavior, and success or failure.

(D) It enumerates the arguments for the strict constructionist position that are rebutted in the paragraphs that follow. - "Enumerate" means list. No list here.

(E) It explains the ramifications of the strict constructionists’ claims and helps clarify the relevance of evidence offered in subsequent paragraphs. - ok

Explanation

1. Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main point of the passage?

Explanation

Use your Bottom Line of the passage to help you to evaluate the choices. The correct answer will describe the main point of the passage.

A. Yes. The author uses evidence from population genetics and paleontology to dispute the strict constructionist point of view.

B. No. While strict constructionist Darwinians do claim that natural selection is responsible for the success or failure of the species, the main point of the passage is to disagree
with such claims.

C. No. The passage states at the end of the third paragraph that natural selection does not explain neutral, nonadaptive mutations.

D. No. While this answer choice accurately captures what strict constructionists believe, the main point of the passage is to disagree with strict constructionists.

E. No. The author does not dispute that natural selection exists, only that the strict constructionist view that it is responsible for all evolution.
