Now that a trade down from 1.09 has a strong possibility, I wanted to take a look at recent history to see likelihood of finding a WR later in the draft. Below, you'll find drafts by year with (1) 1st round WRs and (2) notable WRs selected Round 2+. NFL Mock Draft Database compiles big boards and mock drafts from a variety of sources.
---------------------------------------
2023
Round 11.20 Jaxson Smith-NjigbaNotable Later Picks
1.21 Quentin Johnson
1.22 Zay Flowers
1.23 Jordan Addison2.19 Jayden ReedWRs Drafted: 32 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 6
2.24 Rashee Rice
3.16 Josh Downs
5.42 Puka Nacua
Very early, but it appears the hit rate on the 1st round was 50%. We will see if Puka Nacua continues a hot start to his career. Overall, I don't see any All-Pros from this draft. I included a few extra "notables" here than the rest of the years in case any them take a Year 2 leap.
2022
Round 11.08 Drake LondonNotable Later Picks
1.10 Garrett Wilson
1.11 Chris Olave
1.12 Jameson Williams
1.16 Jahan Dotson
1.18 Treylon Burks2.02 Christian Watson
2.20 George PickensWRs Drafted: 28 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 11
Looking at the success of WRs in this draft, looks to be extremely top heavy. Again, I don't see All-Pros here, but Olave and Wilson have had very solid starts to their careers.
2021
Round 11.05 Jamarr ChaseNotable Later Picks
1.06 Jaylen Waddle
1.10 Devonta Smith
1.20 Kadarius Toney
1.27 Rashod Bateman3.25 Nico CollinsWRs Drafted: 34 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 10
4.07 Amon-Ra St. Brown
I see 2021 as the comprable to this upcoming draft when considering the top end of the draft. 3 receivers were selected in the top 10, all were hits and all 3 could be or already are All-Pros. Additionally, Amon-Ra St. Brown is arguably the best WR in the draft.
2020
Round 11.12 Henry RuggsNotable Later Picks
1.15 Jery Jeudy
1.17 CeeDee Lamb
1.21 Jalen Reagor
1.22 Justin Jefferson
1.25 Brandon Aiyuk2.01 Tee HigginsWRs Drafted: 37 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 12
2.02 Michael Pittman
A historic draft at WR, but moreso for its perceived lack of ulta-high end talent. I see 2024 being a bit of the opposite of this draft. No WRs were taken in the top 10, but 6 still went in Round 1 (8 if you include the first 2 picks in Round 2). 3 were hits and 3 All Pros with Lamb, Jefferson, and Aiyuk.
2019
Round 11.25 Marquise (Hollywood) BrownNotable Later Picks
1.32 N'Keal Harry2.04 Deebo SamuelWRs Drafted: 29 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 9
2.19 A.J. Brown
2.32 D.K. Metcalf
3.02 Diontae Johnson
3.12 Terry McLaurin
Looked at as a relatively weak WR draft, it paid strong dividends to those teams that took one in R2. Interestingly, Deebo AJ Brown and DK Metcalf all are huge WRs who dominate with their size.
2018
Round 11.24 D.J. MooreNotable Later Picks
1.26 Calvin Ridley2.08 Courtland SuttonWRs Drafted: 33 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 6
2.15 Christian Kirk
Woof. 33 WRs were taken in this draft and only 4 hits. Throw this draft away in the trash.
2017
Round 11.05 Corey DavisNotable Later Picks
1.07 Mike Williams
1.09 John Ross2.08 Curtis SamuelWRs Drafted: 32 || Big Board Consensus WRs in top 64 Picks: 6
2.30 Juju Smith-Schuster
3.05 Cooper Kupp
3.20 Chris Godwin
3.32 Kenny Golladay
This could be the best comp for the upcoming 2024 draft. There is a significant drop off after the top 3, with 32 picks in between the 3rd and 4th WRs taken.
---------------------------------------
Looking at this list, I would say that 2017 and 2021 look like the best comps for this draft. Coincidentally, they are opposites where I would say 2017s R1 WRs all missed while 2021s all hit. I could make a case that 2017s predraft evals fit with MHJ (Corey Davis, best all around), Odunze (Williams, monster RAS), and Nabers (Ross, speed/route running with a slighter build). If consensus big boards are any evidence however, 2024 more closely resembles 2021 in both ultra-high end talent and depth. NFL Mock Draft Database currently has 14 WRs projected through the 1st 2 rounds. I think it is a worthwhile exercise then to start looking at what options will be available after the "Big 3" WRs in this draft.
