This study examined parent-teacher agreement on the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) in a racially and economically diverse sample of children in an urban school district. The researchers found lower parent-teacher concordance on the SRS than previously reported, and agreement varied by time, symptom severity, and subscale. Specifically, there was less agreement for less severely affected children than more severely affected children. Agreement on the Autistic Mannerisms subscale was also poor. This suggests that autistic mannerisms may vary between home and school environments.

Study sought to determine if parental conflict was causal to poor adolescent adjustment and if there were any differences between male and female adolescents. Study Design This study was conducted using a correlational design. Researchers conducted study to determine if relationships between high parental conflict and adolescent adjustment existed. Researchers compared several groups of adolescents from homes with intact parents, divorced parents, high conflict, and low conflict to determine relationship. No changes were made within the groups to affect an outcome. Method Original sample size: 170 Participants included: 96 adolescents equally divided by gender and their mothers Participants were recruited through notices, fliers, direct mail advertising, and local media advertising. Participants were selectively placed in eight groups of 12 students. Groups were broken down by socioeconomic status, parental marital status, parental conflict (high vs. low), and gender. Parental conflict was determined using the O’Leary-Porter Scale. High conflict was defined as means lower than 30; low conflict was defined as means higher than 30. Findings were based on surveys completed by the child, parent, and teacher and observational sessions. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a tailored parenting intervention called Group Triple P for parents of gifted children. 75 parents of gifted children between ages 3-10 were randomly assigned to either the parenting intervention or a waitlist control group. Parents who received the intervention reported significant improvements in their child's behavior problems and hyperactivity compared to the control group based on parent reports. Parents also reported improvements in their own parenting styles with less permissiveness, harshness and verbosity. No significant effects were found for teacher reports except a trend for reduced hyperactivity. The study demonstrated that a tailored behavioral parenting program can effectively improve parenting skills and child outcomes for parents of gifted children.

Sibling relationships among offspring of depressed parents

The researchers found that among 316 adolescents aged 13-17 with a depressed parent, those who reported warmer sibling relationships were less vulnerable to the negative effects of parental criticism and hostility. Sprague Human Development and Family Studies, Purdue University Research Findings: Interpersonal relationships among staff caregivers, parents, and children have been recommended as essential aspects of early childhood intervention. This study explored the associations of these relationships with program outcomes for children and parents in 3 Early Head Start programs. A total of 71 children (8–35 months, M ¼ 20), their parents, and 33 program caregivers participated. The results showed that caregiver–child relationships were moderately positive, secure, and interactive and improved in quality over 6 months, whereas caregiver–parent relationships were generally positive and temporally stable. Caregiver–child relationships were more positive for girls, younger children, and those in home-visiting programs. Caregiver–parent relationships were more positive when parents had higher education levels and when staff had more years of experience, had more positive work environments, or had attained a Child Development Associate credential or associate’s level of education rather than a 4-year academic degree. Hierarchical linear modeling analysis suggested that the quality of the caregiver–parent relationship was a stronger predictor of both child and parent outcomes than was the quality of the caregiver–child relationship. There were also moderation effects: Stronger associations of caregiver–parent relationships with observed positive parenting were seen in parents with lower education levels and when program caregivers had higher levels of education. Practice or Policy: The results support the importance of caregiver–family relationships in early intervention programs and suggest that staff need to be prepared to build relationships with children and families in individualized ways. Limitations of this study and implications for program improvements and future research are discussed. Scharfstein, Ph.D.,1 and Johnna Jones, Ph.D.2 Background: Family accommodation describes ways in which parents modify their behavior to help a child avoid or alleviate distress caused by emotional disorders. Accommodation is associated with increased symptom severity, lower functioning, and poorer treatment outcomes. Accommodation is prevalent in childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders (ADs) but no studies have compared accommodation in these groups or compared them to healthy controls to ascertain if accommodation is prevalent in the general population. This study addresses these gaps by comparing patterns of accommodation, factors that maintain accommodation, and its relation to symptom severity in OCD and AD, relative to healthy controls. Method: We directly compared reports of accommodation to childhood OCD (N = 26) and AD (N = 31), and a comparison group of nonanxious (NA) children (N = 30). Mothers completed measures of accommodation (Family Accommodation Scale (FAS)/Family Accommodation Scale–Anxiety (FASA)), anxiety (Screen for Childhood Anxiety Related Emo- tional Disorders–Parent Report (SCARED-PR)), and OCD (Children’s Yale- Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CYBOCS)). Results: Family accommodation is prevalent among mothers of children with OCD and AD. Few differences were found between the two clinical groups who reported more accommodation (F[2,84] = 23.411, P < .001, partial η2 = .358), greater distress (F[2,84] = 24.050, P < .001, partial η2 = .364), and more consequences of not accommo- dating (F[2,84] = 18.967, P < .001, partial η2 = .311), than the NA group. Accommodation was associated with severity of anxiety in AD (r = .426, P = .017) and OCD (r = .465, P = .017), but not in the NA group. Conclusions: Findings highlight family accommodation as a phenomenon that applies broadly and in a similar manner to children with AD and OCD. This study examined the factor structure and validity of the Quality of the Parent-Teacher Relationship subscale from the Parent-Teacher Involvement Questionnaire (PTIQ) for assessing relationships between parents and teachers of children with ADHD. The study involved 260 parents and teachers of children diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten through 6th grade. Results provided support for a two-factor model with separate but related factors for parent and teacher reports of relationship quality. Correlations between this subscale and other measures of parental involvement provided support for its concurrent validity. This measure shows potential for evaluating parent-teacher relationships and the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving family-school collaboration.

Walkup, M.D. Objective: The authors sought to examine the effectiveness of Family Spirit, a paraprofessional-delivered, home-visiting pregnancy and early childhood intervention, in improving American Indian teen mothers’ parenting outcomes and mothers’ and children’s emotional and behavioral functioning 12 months postpartum. Method: Pregnant American Indian teens (N=322) from four southwestern tribal reservation communities were randomly assigned in equal numbers to the Family Spirit intervention plus optimized standard care or to optimized standard care alone. Parent and child emotional and behavioral outcome data were collected at baseline and at 2, 6, and 12 months postpartum using self-reports, interviews, and observational measures. Results: At 12 months postpartum, mothers in the intervention group had significantly greater parenting knowledge, parenting self-efficacy, and home safety attitudes and fewer externalizing behaviors, and their children had fewer externalizing problems. In a subsample of mothers with any lifetime substance use at baseline (N=285; 88.5%), children in the intervention group had fewer externalizing and dysregulation problems than those in the standard care group, and fewer scored in the clinically “at risk” range ($10th percentile) for externalizing and internalizing problems. No between-group differences were observed for outcomes measured by the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment scale. Conclusions: Outcomes 12 months postpartum suggest that the Family Spirit intervention improves parenting and in- fant outcomes that predict lower lifetime behavioral and drug use risk for partici- pating teen mothers and children.
