Explaining Inequity in the Use of Family Planning and Institutional Delivery ...
This study assessed wealth-related inequities in family planning and institutional delivery service use in Ghana, Rwanda, Colombia, and the Philippines. These countries have experienced expansions of national health insurance programs. The study aimed to 1) assess inequities in service use by wealth and 2) explain the contributions of health insurance and other factors to inequities. The results found moderate to high inequities in service use. Health insurance was associated with increased service use but evidence of its impact on lowering inequities was mixed. The study advocates for expanding health insurance coverage, especially among the poor, to increase utilization and reduce inequities. Maternal and child health interventions are important in Ghana given high rates of maternal and child mortality. Key issues include malnutrition, infection, and uncontrolled fertility due to poverty. Antenatal services include physical exams, prenatal advice, testing and treatment for conditions like anemia, malaria and STIs.
