A Marcus Hook man has been charged with abandoning three dogs in a local cemetery.

Lower Chichester police filed three counts of neglect of animals and abandonment against Ali Bilal Muhammad Bey, 40  after police found the dogs in Lawn Croft Cemetery May 9, according to a police incident release.

Police were called about 4:55 p.m. by a woman who reported that a 15-year-old female pitbull named Coco and two female pitbull mixes named Celery and Diamond had been found alone.

Due to health concerns for the dogs, Brandywine SPCA was called to take possession and provide care and shelter for them.

Police investigated and determined that Bey owned the dogs.  Bey later admitted to releasing the dogs due to his concerns for his ability to care for them. He came to regret his decision, police said.

Officials at Brandywine SPCA said it is an open-access shelter, welcoming lost and stray pets as well as victims of neglect and cruelty. They offer services to pet owners who need help.

All three dogs would be great companions for a family with room to welcome them, SPCA officials said. Celery and Diamond,  renamed Daisy and Spirit, rely on each other and are looking for a home together. Ghoul is looking for a soft place to land and spend the rest of the time she has getting the love she needs, they said.

Bey is due in District Court June 20th to answer charges.
