For under a million dollars, one can find all sorts of housing configurations: park- and subway-adjacent studios, one-bedrooms hidden in carriage houses or former shoe factories, and even the occasional true two-bedroom. We’re combing the market for particularly spacious, nicely renovated, or otherwise worth-a-look apartments at various six-digit price points.

We’ve found you a Murray Hill studio that looks like something out of a period drama and a Broad Channel fixer-upper.

A studio in a Murray Hill townhouse for $495,000

23 East 37th Street, #3R

This Murray Hill studio, as shown in listing photos, is a genteel space overlooking the townhouse’s back garden. Photo: Brown Harris Stevens

This studio apartment looks like the residence of a Gilded Age bachelor. Located in a townhouse on East 37th Street between Madison and Park Avenues, the apartment faces north, overlooking the garden, and has the original fireplace mantle with a huge mirror, moldings, woodwork, wallpaper, and a chandelier. There’s a cute black-and-white-tiled kitchen and bath, a walk-in closet, and through-the-wall air-conditioning.

A Sunnyside two-bedroom for $485,000

48-10 45th Street, #4F

This Sunnyside co-op, as shown in listing photos, is a two-bedroom with a windowed bonus room that would be perfect for an office. Photo: Compass

This two-bedroom co-op in Sunnyside comes with a bonus room — a windowed space that, while slightly smaller than a legal bedroom, would make for a very nice office. The apartment is pleasant if unshowy — open views of the neighborhood, hardwood floors, a workaday kitchen and bath, straightforward light fixtures — in an elevator building with laundry, a private garden, a parking garage, and reasonable monthlies of $1,010.

A Broad Channel house for $449,000

21 Van Brunt Road

The Broad Channel house, as shown in listing photos, has three bedrooms and two baths but needs some “TLC.” Photo: Keystone Realty Usa Corp

This free-standing, three-bedroom, two-bath house is located right on the water with a back deck on the beach. Located on a quiet street just off Cross Bay Boulevard, the house could use a little work — “minor TLC needed! Property being sold as is!” the listing reads — but it looks like a fun project for a (cash) buyer up for a Broad Channel adventure.

A two-bedroom in Kensington for $599,000

3845 18th Avenue, #4D

This Kensington two-bedroom, as shown in listing photos, has all the fundamentals: a good size, nice layout, hardwood floors, moldings, and low maintenance fees. Photo: NYC Realty Brokers

This two-bedroom co-op is well-sized — about 1,000 square feet — with low monthly carrying costs of $562. It does need a bit of a refresh, but the floors are hardwood and there are high ceilings with original detail, five closets, and reasonably sized rooms arranged in a nice layout. The building also has an elevator.
