Tag Team Weekly Roundup and Power Rankings: The OC in the NXT title scene

WWE.com

As a developmental brand that doesn’t necessarily call itself a developmental brand, it’s smart for NXT to import main-roster talent. Becky Lynch’s run with the women’s gold elevated other talent and ultimately put Lyra Valkyria over as a big deal. Dominik Mysterio’s run as the chickenshit North American champ was more brilliant work from him and his Judgment Day colleagues. Both helped bring eyes to the product as well.

With Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows continuing to rack up wins and hint at a program with champs Nathan Frazer and Axiom, it only seems like a matter of time until they lock up with the titles on the line. But with so many young tag teams working on experience, it doesn’t feel like the most exciting option (especially if they win).

Out the Mud and Malik Blade/Edris Enofe – the latter of whom racked up another loss in their snakebitten angle – could both be exciting challengers. Or the D’Angelo Family’s Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo and Luca Crisafino. Or members of Meta-Four or No Quarter Catch Crew. For most of the above, it would be their first gold under the WWE umbrella (Stacks was with Tony, admittedly).

The OC has had their tag gold on the main roster. They would attain no additional shine from it. Maybe they’re just placeholder challengers to keep somebody else from taking a loss. Or maybe not. Time will tell.

The following Tag Team Power Rankings take into account wins, power and placement of segments, recentness of appearances, creative direction and momentum for teams and factions.

WWE Tag Team Power Rankings through May 17:

1. Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill (last week: 1)

Pro: The women's tag champs were booked strong yet again, with Bianca advancing in the Queen of the Ring tournament and Jade looking the equal of established powerhouse Nia Jax.
Con: Cargill took a DQ loss, which at least means the teammates won't have face each other -- yet, anyway.

2. The Bloodline (2)

Pro: SmackDown's dominant faction rolled on, with Tama Tonga defeating LA Knight to advance in King of the Ring.
Con: Shocker, they had to cheat to win, but then that is The Bloodline's MO, whatever their configuration.

3. Judgment Day (8)

Pro: Finally have some momentum on their side, with Finn Balor and JD McDonagh winning a fatal four-way for a shot at Raw gold. And Damian Priest is still the Raw champion and doing some great character work.
Con: Won with the help of Carlito, but can you really trust the guy?

4. Awesome Truth (3)

Pro: Still the Raw men's tag champs.
Con: Still sort of not doing much other than commentary. At least they have new challenges (that they've previously defeated) in Judgment Day.

5. A-Town Down Under (4)

Pro: Still the Smackdown champions.
Con: Still not doing much with the belts.

6. Axiom and Nathan Frazer (5)

Pro: Still NXT's tag champs.
Con: Almost certainly wrestling the OC for the titles and I don't necessarily feel OK about it.

7. Imperium (6)

Pro: Gunther had another win and another fantastic performance in holding off Kofi Kingston to advance in King of the Ring.
Con: Ludwig Kaiser's about to get killed by Sheamus, isn't he?

8. Damage CTRL (not ranked)

Pro: Iyo Sky continues to run through the tournament, winning a really good match with Shayna Baszler (while making the latter look like the badass she should be).
Con: Dakota Kai ate a DQ loss to Becky Lynch, then the faction got run off by The Man and pal Lyra Valkyria.

9. The OC (not ranked)

Pro: Added a win over Ridge Holland and Riley Osbourne to potentially move closer to the NXT tag title picture.
Con: As options go, this is one of the less exciting ones.

10. The D'Angelo Family (10)

Pro: Tony is the new Heritage Cup champ, which should help give him an avenue to show his skills.
Con: He'll need to keep adjusting his style to work within the quirky Cup rules.

Tag Team Segment of the Week: A fatal four-way to set up #1 Raw contenders was one of the few matches meaning anything in the tag divsions, plus a Judgment Day win has storyline ramifications.

Grade: C

The King and Queen of the Ring competitions continue to reduce time for tag teams.
