  • slow manifold—The set of all atmospheric states or solutions to a forecast model that evolve slowly with time.
  • slow tail—The extremely low frequency (ELF) component of some sferics that lags the initial very low frequency (VLF) arrival because of the lower phase velocity at low frequencies.
The cause of the slow tail is still controversial. One explanation attributes it to the continuing current. The lightning radiation arrives after the initiating ground stroke because 1) it has components below about 3 kHz in frequencies (necessary for the propagation in the earth–ionosphere waveguide cavity), and 2) it suffers dispersion as a result of the waveguide propagation that broadens the original waveguide impulse, making it look like a tail.
Wait, J. R., 1960: On the theory of the slow-tail portion of atmospheric waveforms. J. Geophys. Res., 65, 1939.
  • sludge—(Also called slush.) A dense accumulation of frazil (or lolly ice); an early stage in the freezing of a body of water.
The sea surface becomes thick and soupy and sometimes greasy in appearance. Sludge depth seldom exceeds one foot. See grease ice.
  • sludging—Same as solifluction.
  • sluff—A small downhill movement of snow.
  • slug test—The determination of hydraulic conductivity in the vicinity of a well by rapidly displacing the water in the well and calculating the amount of time necessary for the well water to return to its previous level.
  • slush icing—The accumulation of ice and water on exposed surfaces of aircraft when the craft is flown through wet snow and liquid drops at temperatures near 0°C.
    See aircraft icing.
  • slush—1. Snow or ice on the ground that has been reduced to a soft watery mixture by rain, warm temperature, and/or chemical treatment. 2. Same as sludge.
  • small calorie—(Abbreviated cal.) Same as calorie.
  • small circle—A line formed by the intersection of the surface of a sphere and a plane that does not pass through the center of the sphere.
    See great circle.
