scatter diagram—(Also called scattergram.) A plot representing corresponding observed values of two variables x and y as points in Cartesian coordinates. If the two variables are functionally related, the points will be bunched, but if they are not functionally related, the points will be scattered uniformly over the plane. Scatter diagrams are used to explore the influence of one variable upon another, strong relationships being revealed as a concentration around a definite curve.
scatter propagation—Propagation of electromagnetic waves by irregularities in the refractive index of the propagation medium. See tropospheric scatter.
scatter—1. Same as scattering; or, sometimes used in referring to the scattered radiation. 2. The relative dispersion of points on a graph, especially with respect to a mean value, or any curve used to represent the points. See scatter diagram, spread.
scattered power—In radar, the power scattered by a target, or the amount of this power arriving at the antenna of the receiver.
scattered radiation—Radiation that has undergone one or more scattering processes. See also diffuse radiation, single-scattering, multiple-scattering.
scattered—1. In radiation, see scattering. 2. A sky coverage of 1/8 through 4/8. In U.S. weather observing procedures, this is reported with the contraction “SCT.”
scattergram—Same as scatter diagram.
scattering area coefficient—(Obsolete.) The scattering efficiency factor.
scattering coefficient—A measure of the extinction due to scattering of monochromatic radiation as it traverses a medium containing scattering particles. Usually expressed as a volume scattering coefficient with units of reciprocal length (i.e., area per unit volume), but also as a mass scattering coefficient with units of area per unit mass.
scattering cross section—The hypothetical area normal to the incident radiation that would geometrically intercept the total amount of radiation actually scattered by a scattering particle.
