  • subpoint—The point on the earth centered directly below a satellite.
This is also called the point of zero nadir angle for a satellite in earth orbit.
  • subpolar anticyclone—Same as subpolar high.
  • subpolar glacier—In Ahlmann's glacier classification, a polar glacier with 10–20 m of firn in the accumulation area where some melting occurs.
  • subpolar high—(Also called subpolar anticyclone, polar high, polar anticyclone.) A high that forms over the cold continental surfaces of subpolar latitudes, principally in Northern Hemisphere winter.
These highs typically migrate eastward and equatorward.
  • subpolar low pressure belt—A band of low pressure located, in the mean, between 50° and 70° latitude.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this belt consists of the Aleutian low and the Icelandic low. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is supposed to exist around the periphery of the Antarctic continent.
  • subpolar westerliesSee westerlies.
  • subrefractionSee substandard propagation.
  • subregional broadcast—A radio broadcast covering an area smaller than that of a regional broadcast.
  • subsidence inversion—An increase in temperature with height produced by the adiabatic warming of a layer of subsiding air.
This inversion is enhanced by vertical mixing in the air layer below the inversion.
  • subsidence—A descending motion of air in the atmosphere, usually with the implication that the condition extends over a rather broad area.
