The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is a member association representing more than 56,000 osteopathic
physicians (D.O.s). The AOA serves as the primary certifying body for D.O.s, and is the accrediting agency
for all osetopathic medical colleges and health care facilities. The AOA’s mission is to advance the philosophy

American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology
General certification in Anesthesiology; with Added Qualifications in Addiction Medicine, Critical Care Medicine,
and Pain Management. Certifications awarded since 2004 are valid for 10 years. For those certified prior to 2004
there is no recertification requirement.
American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology
General certification in Dermatology; with Added Qualifications in Dermatopathology and MOHS-Micrographic Surgery.
Certifications awarded since 2004 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine
General certification in Emergency Medicine; with Added Qualifications in Emergency Medical Services, Medical
Toxicology, and Sports Medicine. Certifications awarded since 1994 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians
General certification in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT); with Added Qualifications
in Geriatric Medicine and Sports Medicine. Certifications awarded since March 1,1997 are valid for 8 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine
General certification in Internal Medicine; with Special Qualifications in Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology,
Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonary Disease,
Rheumatology; with Added Qualifications in Addiction Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Clinical Cardiac
Electrophysiology, Geriatric Medicine, Interventional Cardiology and Sports Medicine. Certifications awarded
since 1993 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry
General certification in Neurology and Psychiatry; with Special Qualifications in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry
and Child/Adolescent Neurology; with Added Qualifications in Addiction Medicine, Neurophysiology, and Sports
Medicine. Certifications awarded since 1995 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine
(Formerly American Osteopathic Board of Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine)
General certification in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Certifications awarded since 1995 are valid for 10 years.
For those certified prior to 1995 there is no recertification requirement.
American Osteopathic Board of Nuclear Medicine
General certification in Nuclear Medicine. Certifications awarded since 1995 are valid for 10 years
American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology
General certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology; with Special Qualifications in Gynecologic Oncology; Maternal
and Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology. Certifications awarded since June, 2002 are valid for 6 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery
General certification in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngolgy, Facial Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic
Surgery; with Added Qualifications in Otolaryngic Allergy. Certifications awarded in Ophthalmology since 2000
are valid for 10 years. For those certified prior to 2000 there is no recertification requirement. Certifications
awarded in Otolaryngology and/or Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery since 2002 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
General certification in Orthopaedic Surgery; with Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Certifications awarded
since 1994 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Pathology
General certification in Laboratory Medicine, Anatomic Pathology and Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine;
with Special Qualifications in Forensic Pathology; and with Added Qualifications in Dermatopathology. Certifications
awarded since 1995 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics
General certification in Pediatrics with Special Qualifications in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, Neonatology,
Pediatric Allergy/Immunology and Pediatric Endocrinology; with Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. Certifications
awarded since 1995 are valid for 7 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine
General certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; with Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine.
Certifications awarded since 2004 are valid for 10 years.
American Osteopathic Board of Preventive Medicine
