Alice Waters Never Plays Bad Cop, And Fired Employees Always Seem to Love Her Anyway

Even though Alice makes her seconds-in-command do the dirty work of firing employees at Chez Panisse, and even though they say, "Alice isn't happy about the way things are going," fired employees always seem to love her in the end, regardless. According to Robert Sutton, author of business tomes The No Asshole Rule and the new Good Boss, Bad Boss, in an interview with Inc., the example of the perennially serene Ms. Waters is "an argument from a leadership perspective that having a bad guy you can blame isn't all bad." But come on, they can't possibly all still love her.

Andrew Knowlton Approves of Big Star

“I went to Big Star last night, and that place could have been a complete shit show, and it teeters on being a shit show, but it’s run like a four-star restaurant. You don’t see it, but there’s always somebody watching.” - Bon Appétit’s Andrew Knowlton found some time for some tacos from Big Star while in town for Chicago Gourmet. [A.V. Club]

What to Eat at Owen and Engine, Now Open

Owen & Engine opened last night, bringing a proper British pub to the eastern edge of Logan Square. The bar is handsome and full of expensive details, even if its location is a little questionable. Currently it's right by a funeral home, next door to a barbecue restaurant, and across the street from a large bland movie theater. But this isn’t just a standard faux-pub with a few beer signs and a funny name. Hosts greet you when you arrive, and it has a menu with prices that kind of demand you take it seriously. We swung by on opening day to see how it all turned out.

The James Weird Awards: Michelin-Starred Nipple-Twisting and Pizza Fight Club

In a world in which Thomas Keller dresses up like Superman, Groupon launches a dating service, Graham Elliot considers running for mayor of Chicago, and a bust of Kevin Bacon is made out of actual bacon, absolutely anything can happen. But we're still shocked by some of the stuff that happens in this week's James Weird Awards.

Dolinsky Picks his Top 5 Burgers

No one eats the lettuce.

Steve Dolinsky has struck again. We realize that this is just one of dozen or so lists that he has kicked out in the past few months, but we can’t help but engage in a burger discussion. Usually a Chicago burger list just places Kuma’s Corner at top and then moves on. That famous spot does make the list at number five, but it’s his number one that we really find fascinating. Dolinsky's favorite burger in the city is Top Notch Beefburger in Beverly. The old-fashioned spot was picked because they “grind the beef on-site, toast their buns, offer deluxe fixin’s and fresh-cut fries cooked in pure beef fat.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Are Copycat Farmers’ Markets Spoiling It for Everyone?

Earlier this year, we noted that a Food Emporium in Manhattan was trying to piggyback onto the next-door Greenmarket by setting up a tent serving “local grown lettuce” and “Jersey-grown asparagus.” Now The Wall Street Journal tells us these “farmers supermarkets” are popping up all over the country.
