It's mid-September, and my Summer of salads is still going strong. Last weekend, I enjoyed a refreshing version of a popular American salad choice, pictured below. Can you guess what it's called?

While on the island of Maui, I took full advantage of the fact that papayas were local and in season. One morning, I enjoyed the melonlike fruit for breakfast in a straightforward tropical medley, with other South Pacific favorites like passionfruit and starfruit; now, I'm longing to dress it up slightly, perhaps with some cacao nibs and hazelnuts for crunch.
The fruit could've just as easily been shaved or shredded into a savory Southeast Asian salad.

The minute tomatoes appear at the farmers market, I eat a Caprese salad nearly every week. It is one of those dishes that exudes Summer flavor. Recently, I was thrilled to find a new twist on the classic that incorporates parmesan crisps and heirloom tomatoes on a bed of herbed salad.

The other day when I was cooking with a friend, she reached for the Dijon mustard. Since mustard is my favorite condiment, I use it often. This jar was almost empty except for about a tablespoon of mustard that was spread on the sides.

Although I love the flavor of corn, simply eating it off the cob can get a little boring. That's why I incorporate it in salads or quick and easy sautes. Upon reading this recipe in the current issue of Bon Appétit, I knew I would enjoy it.

If you're tired of the same old boring salads, turn to seasonal fruit to jazz up those greens. In Winter, I love tossing in segmented oranges, in Spring, I'll throw in strawberries, and now? Well, Summer's beautiful blackberries make an excellent addition to a bed of mixed lettuces.

Ditch the carb-free diet philosophy and sample a Mediterranean diet-friendly salad instead. This Italian bread salad, or panzanella, showcases just-right Summer tomatoes, flavored simply with basil, red onion, and garlic. Arugula adds a slight spiciness, as well as potassium and folate.

This Summer, I've been all about mastering certain cooking techniques. First I tried out several variations of pasta with pesto. Then, I practiced my pie dough-making skills.
