Two transfers in a day! Southampton sign Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Lis

Fresh after announcing the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, Southampton confirmed the transfer of a second ‘keeper in Matuesz Lis today.

Lis signed for a free transfer from Super Lig side Altay SK, joining on a five-year deal, pending approval of a work permit.

The 25-year-old Polish goalkeeper made 35 appearances in the Turkish top tier last season and is a welcome addition to Southampton’s goalkeeping options following the departures of Fraser Forster, who left for Tottenham Hotspur, and Harry Lewis who joined former boss Mark Hughes at Bradford City.

Lis started his career at Lech Poznan in Poland, where he was a teammate of Saints defender Jan Bednarek.

After gaining some experience on loan in Poland’s second tier from Lech Poznan, Lis joined up with Ekstraklasa outfit Wisla Krakow which saw him play 69 times in Polish football’s top division before his move to Turkey in 2021.

“Mateusz is a player who has a lot of the right attributes we look for in a goalkeeper, and still with his best years ahead of him,” Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said in an official press release today.

“Of course, it was a priority for us to strengthen this department in the summer, and Mateusz is an important addition who we hope will be able to help us in the future.”
