Lingua Libre SignIt
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Brief summary

Lingua Libre's mission has been extended to Sign Languages in 2019. Both a click-and-translate Firefox extension and a video recording studio have been developped. Both system UI exist in 35+ languages allowing the global documentation and learning of sign languages. As Manisfest v2.0 extensions are being phased out, the project is under threat. A full revamp into manifest v3.0 and a modern extension structure would allow the project to be compatible with all web navigators.

Event Timeline

Hi @Yug

Thank you for adding your project for GSOC 2024.

A few questions/suggestions:

  • Kindly add Microtasks for contributors to work on.
  • Do you have a second mentor in mind for this project? We recommend that each project has two mentors, with at least one mentor with a technical background.
  • Please can you add the expected size of project it can be either: 90, 175 or 350 hours. If possible please also add, an easy, intermediate or hard/difficult rating. This helps the more inexperienced folks not get overwhelmed and they can focus on reviewing easy project ideas.

@Maryann-Onyinye hello.
I've been working on these issue for past days and can now answer bellow.

  • Microtasks: SignIt is on github, not phabricator. Microtasks (github issues) have been available and resolved by 2 potential interns.
  • Mentors: I'm looking into it to satisfy the requirement.
  • Project size : 90h. Intermediate-Easy. (added in section #Workload )

  • GSOC contributions will commence on Monday, the 18th. It's advisable to have the microtasks ready by Thursday so I can announce to the contributors that a new project has been added before the official kick-off date.

Some potential GSoC intern went ahead and solved microtasks on the project. Should I redirect them to a new task so their action falls after March 18th ?

I believe you don't need to.

@Yug I also want to contribute for the project for gsoc.
Have you already selected the interns for this project ?

Hi @Jatinder190124 No Intern has been selected. Please start working on the Microtasks,if there are none feel free to reach out to the project mentor for some tasks. Thanks!

@Jatinder190124 hello and welcome. No intern were selected yet. Could you introduce yourself on this Github issue #58 and which also clarifies the current avenues . Most importantly, do wish to contribute on GSoC Lingualibre Django/Vuejs ; GSoC SignIt (web extension, Vanilla JS) ; or as a volunteer on one of those projects. (From your previous statement, I assume your aim at a GSoC intership, but you showed up on both).

@Yug I would love to go with Lingualibre Django/Vuejs project for GSOC

But I will keep my eye on SignIt as well because I liked the idea

Heelo @Yug I am an outreachy applicant and I am here after completing the jupyter notebook
I have some queries
-Now what to do with my jupyter notebook.I have sent it to mentor Pablo Argon but didn't get any response yet
-If I am on the right track please guide me how to start
-Are there some other projects to contribute

Hello @Toobaamjad098 i think you are on the wrong ticket. SignIt project is JS only.

Hi our respected mentors @Yug ,

I'm Ankit Kumar, a student at I.I.T Patna, studying Computer Science and Data Analytics., interested in the "Lingua Libre SignIt" project. (Phabricator task: T359799)

My skills in NodeJS & JS and MERN tech stack align with the project's tech stack. I believe gamification through badges will improve user engagement and recognition.
But this is my time at GSoC, that's why I ask to what is the right way to processed for this project . Guide me please !!!

Thank you for considering my issues

Your faithful
Ankit Kumar

Hello, Mentor @Yug

I am Hritik Bhattacharya, and I am interested in contributing to the project "Lingua Libre SignIt" (Phabricator Task: T359799) for GSoC.

I am well acquainted with JS and Node.Js, React, Vue, and also AI technologies. Could you please tell me where to start? I will figure it out, but I am not getting what the major issue is.

Thank you
Hritik Bhattacharya

Hello @Ankit127iitp,
Hello @Hritik25,

Thank you both for your interest into GSoC and Lingua Libre SignIt and your self introduction.

Due to high demand, we were already already advanced with applicant selection : technical on boarding and PR coding on github done.
With limited time I could not bring you up into the selection process, I could not take into account your application. My apologizes for this.

If you are still admissible next year for the GSoC 2025, please investigate again this GSoC + Wikimedia avenue.
