നീർക്കാവലന്മാർ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന തുമ്പി കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരംഗമാണ് പുള്ളി നീർക്കാവലൻ. Epophthalmia frontalis എന്നാണ് ഇവയുടെ ശാസ്ത്രനാമം. ഇന്ത്യ, നേപ്പാൾ, തായ്‌ലൻഡ് തുടങ്ങിയ തെക്ക്-കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവയെ കണ്ട് വരുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ കേരളം, ആസ്സാം, മഹാരാഷ്ട്ര, ഒഡീഷ, തമിഴ്നാട് എന്നീ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങിലാണ് ഇവയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത് .[2].
നീല കലർന്ന പച്ചനിറത്തിലുള്ള കണ്ണുകളോട് കൂടിയ ഒരു വലിയ തുമ്പിയാണ്പുള്ളി നീർക്കാവലൻ. ഉരസ്സിന് ഇരുണ്ട ചുവപ്പ് കലർന്ന ബ്രൗൺ നിറമാണ്. കൂടാതെ മഞ്ഞ കലർന്ന പച്ച നിറത്തിലുള്ള തിളക്കവും ഉണ്ട്. ഉരസ്സിന് മുകൾ ഭാഗത്തായി വീതി കുറഞ്ഞ ഒരു വരയും, ഇരു വശങ്ങളിലായി വീതി കുറഞ്ഞ മറ്റൊരു വരയും കാണാം. കറുത്ത നിറത്തിലുള്ള ഉദരത്തിന്റെ അവസാന ഖണ്ഡങ്ങൾക്ക് ചുവപ്പ് കലർന്ന ബ്രൗൺ നിറമാണ്. ഉദരത്തിൽ ഉടനീളം മങ്ങിയ മഞ്ഞ നിറത്തിലുള്ള പാടുകൾ കാണാം.[3].
പൊതുവെ പ്രായപൂർത്തിയായ പുള്ളി നീർക്കാവലൻ തുമ്പികളെ ജലാശയങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ദൂരെ മാറിയാണ് കാണാനാവുക. ജലസസ്യങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ കുളങ്ങളിലും ടാങ്കുകളിലുമൊക്കെയാണ് ഈ തുമ്പി മുട്ടയിടുന്നത്[2].
