Administrator access

Allanur77@tkwikipedia

Hello Wikipedia community. my admin is expiring after 07.06.2023-year, I want and request to extend admin again and become interface admin. I ask for your support for this. I want to further develop Turkmen Wikipedia. Thank you!!! Allanur77 (talk) 11:18, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

De Wikischim@nl.wikinews

I have been re-elected with two votes in favour and zero against. This time, could my assignment please be permanent (as it's usual on most other projects)? Otherwise I won't candidate myself another time once my adminship will again have expired, as I'm done with this bureaucracy. De Wikischim (talk) 09:15, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Done Granted for 2 years to expire on 2025-06-10. To prolong your (interface) adminship, please start another election a few days before your temporary access expires, and after a week post your request again to this page. Thanks.
I'm really sorry, but the global policy is very clear, we cannot give you a permanent flag in this case or make exceptions, which otherwise we would have to make for everyone, and that would go against the policies. I personally believe that if a user really needs the admin flag, they certainly have no problem submitting a single request once a year or every two years, as done by many users (most projects don't have permanent admins and a lot of users have 3-months or 6-months flag). I still gave you the flag for two years, even if the votes weren't many, since you've already had it previously --Superpes15 (talk) 00:31, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

̀Hello, I am the only admin on Fulfulde Wikipedia, I have been active as a temporary sysop since September, 2022. Krol111@szl.wikipedia

My 7th administrator permission grant. All allowed (requirement is over 500 edits) active users voted for. If you would like to support our project please grant access for 10 years or permanently. We have only one another volunteer administrator. My example access use cases are home page administration, page deletion for page movement using Pywikibot (in this moment I can't do my job), project protection. They are very serious. Please, give my request a serious consideration. Thank you! Krol111 (talk) 13:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Done @Krol111 granting for 3 years; the community size is very low, and your community's decision to limit the discussion to such a minor subset of users doesn't allow for a wide consensus to be demonstrated. I understand this can be a bit annoying and hope this longer grant will help ease the process. You may extend in the future prior to the expiration to avoid a lapse. — xaosflux Talk 13:53, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Permanent administrator rights / Several users@smnwiki

A vote was started on May 30th, 2023 to select permanent administrators for the Inari Sámi Wikipedia (smnwiki), which resulted in the following four users being elected:

These users have served as administrators on the Inari Sámi Wikipedia since the beginning, and they would like to be granted permanent admin rights. -Muotâ (talk) 21:37, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Per MVR, I don't know if the community can be considered large enough to have permanent administrator, and I was also looking at the stats. Waiting for some opinions before making a decision. Thanks :) --Superpes15 (talk) 00:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
MVR discussion
The Northern Saami Wikipedia has four permanent administrators (two are also bureaucrats). Inari Saami has fewer speakers compared to Northern Saami, but our Wiki community is larger and more active than theirs. Muotâ (talk) 09:53, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Percentage-wise the smnwp community is a more than good portion of the Inari Saami-speaking community onwiki and off; I think this needs to be taken into account as four permanent admins is approximately 1 permanent admin for each 100 speakers of the language. These rules have obviously been made for communities with tens of thousands of onwiki users with a larger community offwiki, but they fail to consider communities like the Inari Saami community, which hovers around 1000 (offwiki). -Yupik (talk) 11:41, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Probably because Northern Saami Wikipedia got their first bureaucrats in 2007 when MVR didn't existed yet and advanced permissions were handled more casually [2][3][4]. Once sewiki had own bureaucrats, they were able to elect permanent admins & bureaucrats regardless of the stewards minimum voting requirements. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:36, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
I get that 15 years ago things were different. However, today all languages should be treated equally. If you decide against granting us permanent admin rights, you should remove permanent admin rights from all Wikis that no longer meet MVR. Muotâ (talk) 18:03, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
@Superpes: 22 "active" users per stats page, of which only 3 have 10 or more actions in the past 30 days, and 2/3 of admin logs (block, delete, protect) date 50 actions to last year. I'm of the opinion that this wiki is too small for permanent admins at this time. -- Amanda (she/her) 16:09, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
How large of a community would you require for a language community that has a total of 400 speakers offline? Seems off to judge a small wiki by what is required of the large wikis. -Yupik (talk) 16:49, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Offwiki has nothing to do with the amount of permanent administrators needed online. We only need consider onwiki activities. -- Amanda (she/her) 17:25, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Then take a look at what we have done since the wp has been created, not just the last month or this year so far. Right now the wiki is quieter than normal. School is out, people are out in nature. It will pick up again come fall. -Yupik (talk) 20:58, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
For instance, the reason for my recent sporadic activity on smnwiki is because I am busy translating the MediaWiki core into Northern Saami as part of a Wikimedia Norway project and into Skolt Saami otherwise. When we find another translator for the Northern Saami project, I will have time to once again be more active on smnwiki. -Yupik (talk) 21:02, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
  • Just give these people the rights. I know @Yupik and @Seipinne, and they are completely trustworthy, experienced, and excellent Wikimedians. I don't know the other two people, but if they are in the same group, I trust them, too. I also looked at their contributions and they look fine. If the community trusts them, there's no particular reason to scrutinize it too much.
Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:11, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
We don't just "give these people the rights". We have to consider the fact that you trust them now, but say one of them goes rogue later. 3 people vote to remove, 3 people vote to keep (given there were only 5 people who voted in the original request). Now someone comes to the stewards, and they get mad because we won't remove the rights because the community isn't large enough to understand the abuse/have a proper vote. We continuously run into this problem with wikis trying to grow. So no, we won't just throw rights at users without meeting MVR. -- Amanda (she/her) 17:29, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
We are a small community. We all know each other, and we have worked together on a regular basis for years. I don’t know what problems you might have had with other Wikis, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to our case. Muotâ (talk) 17:43, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Sure, but it also doesn't mean you won't have problems down the road. We just don't want yet another occurrence of this happening. We've had at least 5 wikis with this issue in recent memory. -- Amanda (she/her) 17:54, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
How many speakers do the languages of those 5 Wikis have? We are a small community of about 450 speakers, where everyone knows each other very well. That's not the same as a Wiki community consisting of a few people out of thousands or millions of speakers. Muotâ (talk) 18:11, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
I've been a permanent admin and bureaucrat on the Northern Saami wp for years now during which there have been (afaik) 0 complaints about me and my actions. And I would say that the other 3 stated above would make much better admins (and bureaucrats) than I have been so far. -Yupik (talk) 20:59, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
I agree with Amanda, we can give 1-2 years flags, but we shouldn't give permanent sysop flags there (the old project have permanent admins, who sometimes don't actually need the flag, only because in the past the MVR policy didn't exist). It's not about trust or about being a good sysop - but we have to respect the policies. We can't remove the flags in the projects in which these flags were granted in the past, because this policy was applied later, however we are still allowing temporary flags to new sysops in the projects with old permanent admins. I don't understand where the problem is in making a request every year or every two years, really, it doesn't seem like a problem at all (as well as on big wikis, where the flags are permanent, there are reconfirmation procedures anyway)! Thanks for your understanding Superpes15 (talk) 09:12, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Making a request every year or every two years is a complete and utter waste of everyone's time. You keep saying that permanent admin rights cannot be granted to small wikis as per MVR, but you never explain why. What’s the point in making people request admin rights over and over again? Muotâ (talk) 10:40, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
The policy leaves plenty of room for interpretation. What is considered “large enough”? How many deletions, blocks, page protections, etc. does someone need to have in order to be granted permanent admin rights? Muotâ (talk) 11:13, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
No, respecting the policies is never a waste of everyone's time, is very sad to hear this to be honest. The flag process has been well thought imho, in order to be transparent, to have a supervision, and not to allow to give very long permissions when not needed (or when currently the project is not very big - so permits adapt to the current project situation). I already linked the stats and explained my thoughts. The policy says that the the definition of "large enough" is determined by the stewards, if you want we can open an internal discussion on the specific case, in any case in my experience (also being a former GS), the stats are indicative of a project not large enough to require permanent administrators. There is no fixed number, and rightly so, because many users could create and delete thousands of pages in a few days, saying that the project is large enough, but this should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. I still don't see the problem here since, I repeat, even in many large projects there is a form of re-election (for example I'm a permanent admin on itwiki, who has local 'crats, but there is an annual reconfirmation). If there are problems with the policy, just open an RfC to change it, I don't understand why complain to those who execute it! Superpes15 (talk) 13:13, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
In the past stewards used to hand out admin rights like candy, but one only needs to go through the archives at RFC to find out why they stopped doing this. Too many of these early admins either went inactive very shortly thereafter, or they started acting like project dictators and blocking everyone who challenged their authority. Rschen7754 16:45, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
I am well aware of this problem and understand the skepticism. I have a lot of reasons to think that in this case, the trust would be justified. Unlike some past admins who "came to help" without actually knowing the language and then took the wikis to weird directions, the requesters here know the language, and do very thoughtful and well-planned and organized work. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 07:17, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
While I understand per the collapsed section above that your think your community may be the exception to the rule, stewards don't go with exceptions to the rule, we act on established consensus as the community expects us to. You will need to obtain a global RfC consensus to allow stewards to override MVR should you wish for this to be considered. Barring that happening, we can either hand out extensions now, or do fresh elections down the road. The choice is yours. -- Amanda (she/her) 13:28, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
You can extend our admin rights now. There won't be new elections down the road. Muotâ (talk) 11:09, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
Is there some particular reason this is still on hold? -Yupik (talk) 12:00, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
@Muotâ, Yupik, Seipinne, and SaMSUoM:, Done Granted for 2 years to expire on 30-06-2025. Seipinne, please notice that I have only extended your administrator flag term, please start a new vote for the Interface administrator one if you wish to extend it as well. To address the broad question, I actually disagree with my colleagues Superpes and Amanda here. As Rschen mentioned this page has always been more liberal with regards to permission handling than just strictly adhearing to MVR. Unlike Checkuser and Oversight policies which are very strict and should not be breached unless there is a risk to one's life and limb, MVR is merely a guideline which does the job of having the general permission handling practices documented in writing somewhere, and by no means it has to be taken as gospel. That said, usually I go by the steps of 3, 6, 12, 24, ∞ months, unless there are reasons to skip some of the steps (such as I might give 6 right away if there is clear experience or overwhelming support, or of course permanent might be given much earlier if the more strict MVR requirements are met), so I would be happy to grant the rights permanently next time but I have decided against it now. I would just also mention that I myself have permanent rights on ukwikinews granted to me in a similar manner by another steward, so I've been on both ends of this. --Base (talk) 03:12, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Caro de Segeda@cbk-zamwikipedia

There is nobody taking care of that Wikipedia right now and I would like to revive it. I started gathering a group of people that might start writing articles there. If I can get admin rights for a few months that would be great so that I can clean it up a bit. --Caro de Segeda (talk) 17:45, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

@Caro de Segeda, just to provide more context, you can indeed become a temporary administrator there. For that you have to start a discussion on the wiki, as it seems that the page for administrators does not exist there, a good place would be at cbk-zam:Wikipedia:Portal del Comunidad page, after one week you can come here with a new request linking to that discussion. It is okay if no one votes there, but we need to know that you have made an attempt to have the community have a say about your candidacy. Cheers. --Base (talk) 02:56, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Korean Wikinews Administrator re-election is underway, I leave a request for reappointment because there is no opposition in the election for about a month. As it is the third reappointment, I ask you to give us long-term, or permanent authority so that there will be no inconvenience for users who contribute.--Trainholic (talk) 07:09, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

This is kinda of a blunder. The user candidate himself and I gave a positive vote. After some time, I gave the user admin rights, thinking that was the actual election, but another user alerted me that was not the election. After opening the election procedure, the user has not been elected so his admin rights should be removed asap.--Mannivu · 06:58, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Done They are currently indef blocked on zhwiki. According to the block reason, the block is intended as a temporary measure until sysop flag is revoked by a steward. Hence, processing as an emergency revocation. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:52, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

The user hasn't been active on the wiki for nearly a year by now, which is unfortunately long enough for the removal of his admin rights. I am by no means happy to submit this request, but the rules are clear (6 months of inactivity is enough for the removal). --V0lkanic (talk) 12:28, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

David Wadie Fisher-Freberg@id.wikipedia

Please remove my checkuser flag, as I have accepted a professional position within the Wikimedia Foundation that is scoped in a way that may direct me to be working for the OmbudsCom, which may raise a situation of conflict of interest. I wish to retain my oversighter flag. I waive the usual 24 hour waiting period. Thanks, dwadieff 18:53, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi David Wadie Fisher-Freberg. Please look at this request. Maybe not exactly the same situation, because there is a temporary member of the commission, and a probable professional position here, but it is somewhat similar. I don't think it's necessary to remove flag from the volunteer account because of this, considering also that you want to retain the OS flag. OmbCom also monitors the work of oversighters, so it is not logical to remove one flag and retain another. If you still insist on removal, let me know. --Mykola 19:27, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your response, Mykola. Yes, I am aware of the previous request. The major difference here is that I will be holding a paid professional position in service of the ombuds, rather than being its member as a volunteer. I did not request the removal of my OS flag due to the fact that idwiki only have three OS, one of them are rather inactive, and if my flag got removed that would leave the project with only one OS, which is undesirable; on the other side, with my CU resignation there will still be four idwiki CUs remaining. Should the ombuds open a case evaluating idwiki's compliance with the OS policy, I intend to recuse myself from supporting that work, should I be assigned to it. Hope that explains the background of my request. dwadieff 19:38, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. OK, I remove your CU flag. Good luck in your new job). --Mykola 19:47, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
