Jenna Clark: Scoring First Liverpool Goal “Was Unbelievable”

The towering defender was known as a threat from set pieces when she came to Liverpool, and she finally bagged her first goal for the Reds against Manchester United.

The Liverpool FC Women have shown themselves to be a major threat from set piece situations this season. Defender Jenna Clark came to the Reds this summer with a reputation for putting away set pieces, having scored 10 goals for Glasgow City the season prior. Despite those two factors, the towering defender had not scored this season...that is until she found the back of the net against Manchester United on Sunday.

Clark was understandable excited to have finally broken her duck for the Reds. Her goal gave Liverpool the win over Manchester United, capping off a great week that saw Liverpool also take down title challengers Chelsea.

“It was unbelievable,” said Clark about the feeling of scoring. “I’ve said it, it’s been a long time coming for me personally. That’s the way I’ve been feeling. To get one this season is good.”

“The points are massive and the week has been massive for us as well. To come away with six points is really good for us.”

With the two wins this past week, Liverpool are now in sole possession of fourth place in the table. Any points against Leicester City on the last weekend of the season would ensure the Reds finish in that spot. Even without the last match being played, Liverpool are 15 points better off than last season. When asked about how the squad feels about the progression from last year to this one, Clark said everyone is really excited for the direction things are headed.

“Probably the same as it feels for the fans! There’s a good energy going round the club just now. It’s always been there and we know what we’re capable of on the pitch. You’ve seen the results of that. It’s exciting.”

While Clark just joined this past summer, she says there’s a lot of positivity and excitement around the dressing room. Besides the results on the pitch over this season, the club has also moved into their new permanent training facility at Melwood and announced a move to a much more modern stadium starting next season.

“It’s all I’ve known on the women’s side since coming in this year, but from what I’ve heard and from where we’re going, it’s really exciting. There’s a lot of positivity around the club in progressing us as the women’s side, so it’s really exciting.

“Hopefully it can just keep growing season on season. One season at a time, one game at a time. If we try to get more results as we can, I think it’ll help us off the pitch as well.”

Clark also made sure to highlight the impact the entire backroom staff have on the club, including all of the support staff that make everything possible on a daily basis.

“I don’t think I can probably put into words how much effort – not just the coaching staff but the full staff – put in. It makes it easier for us on the pitch, and at training as well. They put in the hours and we can see it and it really helps us get results like today.”
