Man's Best Friend
Calling 'Antarctica' the saddest film I have ever seen would be accurate but wouldn't do the film justice, calling 'Antarctica' the saddest thing that I have ever experienced in my entire life would. I cried 15 times while watching 'Antarctica'... there have been family deaths that didn't hit me nearly as hard as this film did. I love animals and love dogs more than anything in the entire world, if I see a human die then I will feel little to nothing... if I see a dog die then I won't be able to get out of bed for a week.
I was immersed to the point where I new every single dog by it's name and…
Arguably one of the great films about the relationship between man and man's best friend. Certainly one of my favorites, alongside Bong Joon-ho’s Barking Dogs Never Bite, and (not everyone’s cup of tea) A Boy and his Dog. Placing a cute dog in your film and then killing it off is one of those tropes, while not inherently bad, has been over-used to the point of parody(Gordon Korman's "No More Dead Dogs" was a hilarious young adult novel that made fun of this in coming-of-age stories). Bong's film is a black comedy revolving solely around the kidnapping murder of dogs, as a way to comment on South Korean society, as the westernized values of keeping dogs as pets displayed the…
I have been wondering once in a while why the Japanese stage themselves in some movies handling practical things like complete morons, while we know that they are in some ways absolute perfectionists combined with planfull action. Here the three men are pretty clumsy handling the sled dogs and the sled. In the beginning we watch them travelling through the ice desert for quite a while without knowing what they are actually doing there and where they are going to. Interesting btw, this movie apparently has ben shot in the north of Hokkaidō! The landscape convinced me as an Antarctic region completely. In “snow monkey” they say this is an extremely cold and snowy area.
The plot seems to address…
Its amazing how good film makers can make a pack of dogs running through the snow for two and a half hours, be more interesting and have more emotional impact than the lionshare of stuff that comes out today.
Antartica is an amazing film that can be watched for free on YouTube as of the time this review was written.
Vangelis is killing an average Adventure film with his masterpiece of a score. His melancholically sounds combined with these Antarctic pictures are some hell of a combination.
A film which grabs the viewer and never lets go. The audience so identifies with each dog, that as the dogs fight for survival, alone, during a fierce Arctic winter, the story of each one's bravery against impossible odds is both uplifting and saddening. Ultimately this is a story about man's relationship with dogs, and the unbreakable bond of love that exists between them. And, finally, the cinematography is beautiful and that Vangelis score goes straight to your heart.
