Re: The Care Hospital attracts a high number of patients [#permalink]
In my case, IMO is C
I was confused between A and C. Here is my thinking.

A. The quality of service provided by the Care Hospital will certainly decline over the next few months.
-> 'certainly decline over the next few months.'
We cannot assure that within few months, the quality of service would be declined.
It is possible or not.
B. The training program for nurses will have to be comprehensive so the nurses can undertake all the tasks that only doctors undertook previously.
-> 'This approach(training the nurses) will however, not completely solve the problem.'
B refutes the contents of the passage.
C. If recruiting doctors from other hospitals as visiting doctors were possible, it could potentially help the hospital maintain its high quality of care.
-> correct.
'unless the doctor staff is increased' : C said 'doctor staff is increased.'
D. The declining quality of care at the hospital will reduce its patient intake which will solve the problem on its own.
-> Out of scope
It is hard to know. There is no mention about patient intake.
E. Allowing doctors to spend less time per patient will help the hospital maintain the quality of care.
-> Problem comes from what doctors cannot provide enough time for every patient.

The Care Hospital attracts a high number of patients with mental illness who need special care. The doctors at the hospital, however, cannot provide enough time for every patient unless the doctor staff is increased by more than twenty percent. Drastically increasing the doctor staff is not a practical solution, given that the city has dearth of medical professionals. Another alternative is to train the nurses on many of the tasks that previously only the doctor undertook. This approach will however, not completely solve the problem. It is thus clear that the high quality of care the hospital currently provides may not be maintained for a long time.

Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?

A. The quality of service provided by the Care Hospital will certainly decline over the next few months.- too strong language. It’s not certain. So reject it.
B. The training program for nurses will have to be comprehensive so the nurses can undertake all the tasks that only doctors undertook previously.-there is no where in the passage where timeline is discussed. Incorrect
C. If recruiting doctors from other hospitals as visiting doctors were possible, it could potentially help the hospital maintain its high quality of care. This would help the hospital to maintain quality.
D. The declining quality of care at the hospital will reduce its patient intake which will solve the problem on its own.- this could happen even without training the nurses. Incorrect
E. Allowing doctors to spend less time per patient will help the hospital maintain the quality of care. We cannot predict that. Incorrect

paitents are mentally ill and need special care.
Only doctors can provide special care.
Need to increase doctors by at least 20% but cannot. So they plan to train nurses to do certain tasks.
This action will not COMPLETELY solve this problem. This means this would solve to an extent.
Then author concludes that quality of the care that hospital provides MAY decline.

This whole thing tells us that if there is anything that could help the hospital to make up for the tasks nurses are going to perform, quality of care could be maintained.

I am not sure why the answer is what it is. For inference questions, it is required that one operates within the parameters of what has been provided within the sentence and the answer seems to suggesting something completely new.
Kindly support your answer with explanations!
Thanks

A.In Inference/most strongly supported and must be true questions, one must read the stimulus carefully, especially the modifiers.Must be true/most strongly supported and inference questions are usually fact sets which do not have conclusions all though this obviously does and it states that "the high quality of care MAY not be maintained" not WILL like choice A seems to suggest. Wrong

B.This would have been right if it did not use the modifier "ALL" for the tasks nurses have to be trained on.The stimuli said "MANY" of the tasks not all.Another bites the dust because of modifiers

C. I love the phrasing for this: it "COULD" potential help not definitely help. This is the correct answer. Because the stimuli said they'd need to employ over 20% doctors to maintain current health care standards. since we do not know how many from other hospitals will be hired, we can not say it would definitely help and this answer carefully captures the meaning and intent of the stimuli.

D.It may reduce its intake but it is not certain

E.Another could be true answer

Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?

Lets Try to eliminate the wrong nswers

A. The quality of service provided by the Care Hospital will certainly decline over the next few months. -Incorrect
We don't know whether the quality will CERTAINLY decline or not. We have information that it May Not be maintained. Even if it does, "Next Few Months" is very specific. Why not 4 months/1 year or 4 years
B. The training program for nurses will have to be comprehensive so the nurses can undertake all the tasks that only doctors undertook previously. - Incorrect
We dont know the current knowledge gap between the doctors and the nurses. It may be possible that the nurses are almost equally competent and just need some basic training
C. If recruiting doctors from other hospitals as visiting doctors were possible, it could potentially help the hospital maintain its high quality of care. - Looks Good
Not an extreme statement.
D. The declining quality of care at the hospital will reduce its patient intake which will solve the problem on its own.-Incorrect
May not be true. Maybe it is the only hospital in the city. Even after the degraded quality of care it is still way better than the other hospitals
E. Allowing doctors to spend less time per patient will help the hospital maintain the quality of care. --- Incorrect
How much less is enough? we don't know that.

But if we look at options B,C,D & E , those are not the derivation or the inference of the understanding of the passage. They merely are the courses of action or suggestions (and random assumptions of the author) that by carrying out certain things will help the hospital to maintain the delivery of the quality of service which they have now (and might possibly get declined in the upcoming future , due to lack of the medical staff).

By analyzing the all options Except A. They are the mere suggestions , random assumptions and courses of action , which do not provide the inference or the derivation of logical statement which we are meant to derive from the above questions. So IMO it should be A, THOUGH it cannot be certainly claimed, but vin the view of the above options A suits more to the QUESTION TYPE

PLEASE LET ME KNOW , ON WHICH AREA I MISUNDERSTOOD THE QUESTION STEM.
THANKS,
RAVI

ExpertsGlobal5,

Can you share your reasoning for option C.

Not very clear as to how is C the answer.

Re: The Care Hospital attracts a high number of patients [#permalink]
Dear EXPERT,
I have a doubt
The answer is E according to me

So the argument clearly says that-
1. Doctors do not have enough time to see all patients
2. the First solution = to train nurses to do some tasks ---> so that doctors won't have to do that ---> will lead to doctors getting some time in hand ---> mostly because their TIME PER PATIENT WENT DOWN

Thats wat E says...
Where am I going wrong?

Hi KarishmaB,

In OG , Prep , Advanced , I have not come across any question where conditional IF answers are right in an Inference question.
By any chance , can you recall any OG question where conditional if answer is right ?

We do get to see conditional conclusions but I can't recall a conditional inference option offhand - but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Theoretically, there is no reason why we cannot have a conditional inference. In any case, GMAT is evolving and any sort of preconceived notions about what has not been seen before will not work going forward. Most of the questions you see today were active many years ago. They cannot dictate what GMAT will give in the future. Keep an open mind and rely on your reasoning skills.
