How to use red links

When a link in Wikipedia leads to nowhere, it is displayed in red to alert our editors that it requires attention. A red link can mean one of two things:

  1. The link is broken and no longer leads to an article (perhaps because the underlying article was deleted). In such a case, the link needs to be removed or renamed to point to an existing article.
  2. A new article is needed. When a Wikipedian writes an article, it is common practice to linkify key topics pertinent to an understanding of the subject, even if those topics don't have an article on Wikipedia yet. This has two applications:
    1. From within an article, such a link prepares the article to be fully supported. At any time, a Wikipedian may independently write an article on the linked-to subject, and when this happens, there's already a link ready and waiting for it. The red link also gives readers the opportunity to click on it to create the needed article on the spot.
    2. In topic lists, it is useful to include every topic on the subject you can possibly find or think of. When they are turned into links, the list immediately shows where the gaps in Wikipedia's coverage for that subject are, since all of the topics missing articles will show up in red. Such lists are useful tools in developing subject areas on Wikipedia, as they show where work is needed most.

Question from El kukulkano (03:37, 3 July 2024)

edit

Hello there! How can place my source better? I got the links and "" sections, but not sure how to LINK those to the hyperlinks themselves to have those placed at the Reference section. --El kukulkano (talk) 03:37, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

El kukulkano Good day and thank you for the question. First of all, kindly remove the info on your user page regarding Musk and "ust a fellow brother scumbag, like all of you. But I ain't pretending otherwise." for Wikipedia is an online encyclopedias which article/content added or changed needs to be supported by independent, reliable sources such as from the newspapers or books for verification. You might "personally disagree" with Musk or the media that is your own "private" opinions/thought. Here in Wikipedia, we just recorded what is stated by the independent, reliable source and not our opinion. For you to state that in you user page, which imply you have an agenda which is not encourage here. Secondly, in Wikipedia we our conduct and communication needs to be civil as if you to mention that other editor might be a "scumbag" is not a positive and encouragement to work together. As such, I suggest you to remove all the content on your user page. Pls see WP:User Page guidelines.
Your edits on Paradox of tolerance were removed twice for the first two sources are not considered in reliable. And the third one is considered reliable; however, the source does not mention of the subject in hand and what you have done was synthesis of material/opinions which is not allowed but we paraphrase what the sources stated directly. To added source (inline citation), pls use the horizontal format of Template:cite web, if the source is from the web.
Lastly, I "strongly" suggest to take up a short program 30mins - see WP:TWA to understand the fundamental Wikipedia guidelines so you would understand what to do and what not to do when editing Wikipedia. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 03:23, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from MondaDR on User:MondaDR/sandbox (17:43, 10 July 2024)

edit

Hello, I came across a studio photograph of my grandfather and the actor, Arthur Elton. It was taken in 1913 in Seattle. My grandfather was an usher at a theater and sat for a portrait with Mr. Elton. Because there is little written about Mr. Elton, I wonder if it would be useful to include this photograph and the information inscribed on the back. Do you think this is relevant or pertinent to expand Mr. Elton’s biography? Thank you, Dan --MondaDR (talk) 17:43, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

MondaDR Good day and thank you for the question. First of all, there is no article about Arthur Elton (actor) in English Wikipedia. Secondly, you need to be the copyright holder (the one who took the photo) in order to upload it to Wikipedia and I guess you are not the one who took the photo since it is dated 1913. Thank you.
