Polyurethane foam used to fill a cable tray penetration. At Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant, a seal of this nature, covered on both sides with two coats of a flame retardant paint was used instead of a boundedfirestop. The foamed plastic caught on fire through exposure to a candle. The ensuing fire caused significant damage to the station. This picture was taken in a power plant in Nova Scotia, where it was subsequently removed and replaced with firestop mortar. The Browns Ferry fire caused significant remedial work to be conducted with all Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensees.
