This file requires updating because: There are 4 new provinces in the Indonesian side of New Guinea (note the bottom-right side of the image), which are Southwest Papua from West Papua, and Central, South and Highland Papua from Papua, and their borders are still not yet included on the map. In doing so, you could add a timestamp to the file.

Summary
DescriptionBuddhist sects.png
English: Map of the main modern Buddhist sects, source is Rupert Gethin's the Foundations of Buddhism, pg xvi
This map of asia image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Buddhist sects.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.

89.2% of the population of the Zabaykalsky Krai are Russians, who are predominantly Orthodox Christians or atheists. Buryats, predominantly Buddhists, live on the territory of the Agnskoye Buryat Okrug, part of the Zabaykalsky Krai. Also, Irkutsk Oblast includes the Ust-Ordynsky Buryat Okrug, where Buryats also live compactly.
There is a significant Chinese Mahayana minority in the Indonesian provinces of North Sumatra (more specifically in Medan), the Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan
I used a new base map which has the sub-divisions of nation states, this allows for a much better and accurate map. Also, the Dalit Buddhists in India have been added, and colors which represent two forms of Buddhism in one region have been added.
Updated to show the ethnic Han population in Xinjiang which are mainly Mahayana Buddhists (they are depicted only in the regions of Xinjiang which they are the dominant ethnic group).
Updated to reflect the Khmer Krom people in the Mekong delta southern region of Vietnam. Correction for previous statement, the northwestern concentration of Theravadins in Vietnam are mostly a mixture of tribal Tai, Lao and Khmer peoples.
