That's 60s
That's 60s is a British digital television channel dedicated to 1960s music, created by the That's TV network.[1] It is available on Freeview channel 75.[2] and was available on Sky and Virgin Media until 1 July 2024.[3]
Format[edit]
The channel is headed by Kris Vaiksalu. It was launched on 6 January 2023, and replaced the earlier channel Smithsonian which was running on the same frequencies. Vaiksalu decided to launch the channel after he found playing 1960s pop music on the parent That's TV channel created favourable ratings, and wanted to put out a wider variety of music compared to other networks that played more recent material.[2] The channel is free-to-air and funded by advertising, shown in breaks approximately every three-to-four songs.[4]

The channel began with veteran disk jockey Tony Blackburn, who chose to play the Move's "Flowers in the Rain", echoing the first song he played on BBC Radio One when it launched in 1967.[5] He has a special show on Friday evenings, in which he talks about his favourite music clips before they are shown.[4] The channel also planned to feature fellow veteran presenters David Hamilton and Bob Harris.[6] Harris broadcast his first show on 17 February.[7]
Content[edit]
The channel's range of content is restricted because of the limited amount of video material still available from the 1960s that has not been wiped. To work around this, it broadcasts live performances from later times in which the original artists play songs that were hits in the 1960s, such as Simon and Garfunkel's The Concert in Central Park from 1982. Several clips come from US television shows such as the mid-1960s Hullabaloo which have not been seen regularly on British television.[4]
Reviewing the channel, Sean Ross criticised the choice of material, thinking it might be too obscure, and also the lack of regular presenters. A specific concern for a 1960s music channel was the lack of any videos by the Beatles, and limited coverage of Cliff Richard.[4]
That’s Memories[edit]
That's Memories launched as a placeholder channel on 12 June 2024, on Freeview 71, after That's TV picked up a fully national Freeview slot on channel 71 from A+E, who had TCC on that channel[8] and replaced That's 60s on Sky and Virgin Media on 1st July 2024. The channel is available on Sky channel 191 and Virgin Media channel 296.
It still broadcasts a large amount of music clips from the 1960s, around six hours a day,[9] alongside history programmes and films.[10][11][12] These films included For the Love of Ada with Wilfred Pickles and Irene Handl,[13] the 1971 British thriller Die Screaming, Marianne[14] with Susan George and Barry Evans[15] and All the Right Noises[16] with Tom Bell, Olivia Hussey and John Standing.[17]
Even though it features music programming and films, the channel bills itself as 'The Home of History and Culture'[18] and shows more documentaries than the original That's TV line-up of comedy and drama, with programmes like Michael Aspel’s WW2,[19] True Crime: Rise of the Mob, The Story of London and Secrets of WW2 being in its initial line-up of programmes. Nevertheless, even with the channel having less music programming than entertainment channel That’s TV2, That's Memories is currently listed as a music channel on Virgin Media.[20]
