Hawk is a general term referring to many birds of prey, particularly those of the genera Accipiter or, in North America Buteo. They are characterised by short rounded wings, long tails and high visual acuity.

Hawk is also a crude political term for persons who are aggresive, favor military solutions to problems and are unbending and unforgiving to their nation's enemies. Compare Dove.
