undoubtedly exist amongus, but we cannot accept the inference the authorrather implies than states, that they would becured by the adoption of a constitution similarto the British. The United States being freefrom the burden of king and aristocracy, arelittle likely to retrograde to so low a conditionof mental capacity as to adopt such a remedy fortheir troubles. In his second lecture on theChurch Professor Blackie is more sensible. Heis upon his own ground, and understands thecase without British prejudice. What does his-tory teach us about the Church? There aremany valuable lessons about it which the authorpoints out with lucidity and power. Principalamong them is the evil of the Church drawingmoney and prestige from the State. Mr. Blackierealizes that such a league must demoralize theChurch, and he cites historical facts in proof ofhis assertion. The evil of intolerance is anotherwarning illustrated repeatedly in history. A Boycotters Court at Grane, Kilkenny County, Ireland. fessor Blackie mentions several others which areinimical to the progress of the Church, and whichhistory clearly shows are to be avoided^, Thetwo lectures arc full of earnest practical thought, and will be read with interest and profit. Pp.123; price 75 c. Published by Charles Scrib-ners Sons. MR. C. H. SPURGEON ON PREACHING. Before leaving for Mentone Mr. Spurgeon, ina racy address, warned his students against in-dulging in long sermons. A few extracts fromthe address, which has been published, will befound interesting. Very seldom, says Mr.Spurgeon, do we hear any complaint as to theundue shortness o( discourses ; the tendency isall the other way. Why do ministers preachlong sermons ? Is it for their own pleasure, oris it for the pleasure of the people ? If it is thelatter, they certainly are grievously mistaken ;and if it is the former, they might practise a lit-tle self-denial. Sermons ought never to bemeasured by the yard-stic
