BOMESI and Vox Media Launch the Concert Black Communities Channel

The solution will directly support Black-owned media companies.

Today, The Black Owned Media Equity and Sustainability Institute (BOMESI) has announced a collaboration with Vox Media’s award-winning ad marketplace, Concert. The new solution allows advertisers to run campaigns across the Black-owned media companies within the BOMESI collective, while providing direct revenue to those companies.

The collaboration and new solution allows brands to directly support a collection of Black-owned media companies with consistent revenue streams, while reaching audiences at scale. With this solution, advertisers can now leverage the proprietary high-impact ad unit known as the Athena, across a number of participating publishers including Black Wall Street Times, CultureBanx, Her Agenda, BleuLife Media Group and All Hip Hop, with additional publishers joining in the future.

“We are building an ecosystem that repairs the damage from the exclusion of Black-owned media and other platforms from marginalized communities in media plans historically,” says DeVon Christopher Johnson, co-founder of BOMESI. “Building equitable and sustainable partnerships with brands as influential as Vox Media shows what can be done when intention meets action to provide the scale needed to grow the industry.”

As part of the collaboration, Vox Media has pledged to make donations to BOMESI. in furtherance of its mission.

“BOMESI’s three pillars: ecosystem building, education, and economic empowerment each manifest through our partnership with Vox Media,” adds Rhonesha Byng co-founder BOMESI. “This is not just an additional revenue stream for these companies, we’re creating a mechanism to provide meaningful capital that strengthens the sustainability of Black-owned media platforms both large and small.”

BOMESI was created to unite and advance Black-owned media businesses, educate the public on the importance of these platforms, and provide resources to increase visibility. Vox Media launched Concert in 2016 as a publisher-led marketplace, with the goal of creating a better and safer digital ecosystem for brands, publishers and users, built on the pillars of trust, scale and quality. In 2022, Vox Media launched the Concert SSP, continuing on its mission of building a better open web, while making it easier for advertisers to invest in quality journalism.
