PlayStation

For more than 25 years, Sony’s PlayStation has been synonymous with gaming. It's given players experiences like God of War, The Last of Us, and Final Fantasy VII alongside technological innovations from CD-ROMs all the way up to 4K, VR, and cloud gaming. There have even been attempts at portable gaming with the PSP and Vita. Across multiple generations the company has been a pioneer, starting with the original PlayStation and continuing with the PS5.

A little Blade Runner, a little Bioshock.

Critical Hit Games’ Nobody Wants to Die got its first gameplay trailer during the Summer Game Fest’s Future Games Show.

A neo-noir, time-controlling detective story, Nobody looks like a slick. moody blend of Bioshock, Blade Runner, and maybe even The Fifth Element. So I’ll be buying it, no matter what reviewers say. It’s out July 17th on Steam, Xbox Series X / S, and PS5.

2024 is the year of Shadow (the Hedgehog.)

Sonic Generations was a good-ass game and I’m excited for its darker, edgier sequel Sonic x Shadow Generations. Just in time for the Sonic 3 movie, Sonic x Shadow Generations adds a gaggle of new levels to play as Shadow the Hedgehog — but let’s not get our hopes up that Keanu Reeves will make an appearance in this one. Sonic X Shadow Generations launches on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation October 25th.

Sony teases Bloodborne in Astro’s Playroom update hours ahead of Summer Game Fest.

Astro’s Playroom got a stealth-dropped update today, with new trophies, collectible in-game gatchas, and secret “PS Labo” rooms.

It also features a riddle-like mystery to rescue special bots — including a Bloodborne one. Forum-goers are donning tinfoil hats ahead of potential announcements at Summer Game Fest, which starts within the hour. Team Asobi already has an upcoming Astro Bot game.

8K on the PlayStation 5 is no more.

If you want to be technical about it, 8K was never especially viable on the PS5 to begin with, but when the system launched in 2020 TV makers were heavily pushing 8K as the next big thing and Sony wanted to futureproof its pricey platform.

With a PS5 Pro coming soon, and likely supporting more robust 8K, removing 8K claims off the PS5 box isn’t a surprise.

“Don’t call it a bandana; call it seaweed.”

The DidYouKnowGaming YouTube channel got David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games (with some exceptions), to narrate a roughly 15-minute video of obscure facts and Easter eggs from the first PlayStation game.

It reminded me, after all these years, just how leeringly horny the original game was.

It’s going to be a hot Tomba summer.

The classic PlayStation platformer is coming back with a new edition on the PS5. It launches on August 1st (a PS4 version will follow). “I’ve long wished that the game could be accessible to more people on modern systems,” creator Tokuro Fujiwara explained on the PlayStation Blog. “Now that the opportunity is here.”

God of War Ragnarök on PC requires a PSN account.

Here we go again. Sony just announced Ragnarök for PC, but in a video and accompanying blog post it says the game will require a PlayStation Network account. It’s not clear why, and comes weeks after Sony had to back down and reverse plans for a PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 after blistering player reaction.

Hey Overwatch, can I copy your homework?

NetEase Games debuted a new trailer for Marvel Rivals during Sony’s State of Play. And while I know nobody can claim sole ownership over a 5v5 hero shooter, it’s getting really hard to ignore the Overwatch-ness of it all when all of the trailer’s action takes place in a techno-futuristic Japanese temple festooned with cherry blossoms. Maybe things will look different during the closed beta coming this July.

Another horror remake.

Close to a decade after it first launched, the interactive slasher movie Until Dawn is getting a remake that’s launching on both the PS5 and PC this fall. The first trailer gives a good sense of how much it has been updated for the new hardware. (Unfortunately it’s age-restricted, so you’ll have to click through to watch!)

Look, I have no idea what’s going on in this game.

But it sure looks cute. Infinity Nikki is described as an “open-world dress-up adventure game” which, well, that definitely is a genre. A beta is launching on the PS5 some time soon.

New Dynasty Warriors coming next year.

The chaotic action series is returning with Dynasty Warriors: Origins in 2025, though the announcement trailer doesn’t give much away.

Oh, and here’s some gameplay.

Because the CG trailer didn’t give a good sense of what Concord is actually like. But now we know: it looks a lot like Apex Legends and Overwatch.

An intro to Sony’s next multiplayer shooter.

A year after acquiring Firewalk Studios, Sony is showing off our first good look the developer’s upcoming Concord. (We got a brief teaser trailer last year.) The clip serves as an introduction to this original sci-fi universe, which looks heavily inspired by Star Wars and the MCU. The 5v5 shooter is coming to both the PS5 and PC. Early access starts on August 23rd.

Bungie responds to the Destiny 2: The Final Shape leak.

Earlier today Destiny 2 players were able to access The Final Shape expansion early through Sony’s PS5 cloud streaming service. Now Bungie has responded, confirming the leak and saying “it’s always extremely difficult when our team’s hard work is leaked early, but we are still excited for everyone to experience the full release on June 4th together.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is coming to Xbox One and PS4.

Rumors suggested that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launch would appear on previous-gen consoles, and now we have confirmation from Microsoft. A new Xbox store listing for Black Ops 6 lists that the game is playable on Xbox One. We’ll learn a lot more about the game on June 9th after the Xbox game showcase.

Sony thinks its PC games will tempt you to buy a PlayStation. Really?

PlayStation’s soon-to-be-co-CEO Hermen Hulst just set the record straight: Sony will indeed publish live service games “simultaneously, so day and date, on PlayStation 5 and PC.”

But not necessarily Sony’s biggest single-player games: he’ll “take a more strategic approach” to those “tentpole” titles. Why?

“We’re finding new audiences that are potentially going to be very interested in playing, for example, sequels on the PlayStation platform.”

“The legend of Erdrick draws near.”

A short video from Square Enix reveals that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, a remake of the 1988 RPG, will come to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Square Enix first announced it in 2021 alongside Dragon Quest 12, and we could soon get a release date. The charming art style is reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, which uses the same engine.

EA Sports brings college football back to game consoles on July 19th.

After plenty of teases and licensing news, EA is showing off the official covers for its NIL-enabled College Football 25 game, which is returning after a decade-long break. Even if they don’t have the backup QB from Texas, EA has signed the starter, as its cover features Quinn Ewers alongside Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, and Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter.

Saddle up for Red Dead Redemption II on PlayStation Plus.

Rockstar’s hit open-world western will hit the catalog on May 21st, along with Watch Dogs and The Sims 4’s City Living expansion, according to the PlayStation blog.

But as Sony giveth, it also taketh away — Horizon Zero Dawn is indeed going back into the vault the same day. Maybe when we see it next, it’ll be remastered.
