Item Q1764725 "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera" was created as an instance of a "version, edition, or translation". You have fundamentally changed the nature of the item. If you want a "written work" instance for this book, perhaps you should create a new item.

True but actually, *you* fundamentally changed the nature of the item in July 2020. Since the creation in December 2012 it was always about the book-work and not about the book-edition (by the way, book (Q571) should never be used as a value of the propety instance of (P31), see Wikidata:WikiProject Books). And I totally agree, the edition should have it's own item.

Actually, perhaps it was not created as a "version, edition, or translation". However, the problem remains that numerous pages link to it as though it is an instance of a "version, edition, or translation". I believe it would be easier to leave it as that and to create a new page for the written work.

You're right, I didn't pay attention to the links. Not sure if it would be easier but it wouldn't be cleaner.

Especially as there is only 26 items linked to Q1764725 (see Special:WhatLinksHere/Q1764725), but even if there was thousands of links we could change them all in mere minutes. I could take care of it if you want.

Okay, I created Q108916297 "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, first edition" as a "version, edition, or translation" and added it under "has edition" to Q1764725, the instance of the "written work". I went through the first page listed as linking to Q1764725, which was Q116160 "Otto Ackermann". I changed the links manually, opening every reference to find each one on the page which cited the first edition. There were several. Of course, this is tedious. If you could show me how to do this more easily, I would be grateful.
