Most of us communicate from the outside in, but author Simon Sinek believes true inspiration comes when we start with why. This brief introduction to The Golden Circle is a teaching tool used in class.
Aaron Jones Powerpoint on Start With WhyAaron Jones
This document summarizes key points from Simon Sinek's book "Start With Why" presented by Aaron Jones. It discusses that people are motivated by belonging and purpose more than self-interest. The "Golden Circle" explains that communicating your "Why" is more effective at inspiring people than focusing on "How" or "What". Trust emerges when people feel an organization is driven by more than just self-gain. While it's important to know your "Why", you also need to know the "How". The presentation emphasizes starting by understanding your motivations and communicating those to others to inspire action.
1) The document discusses the concept of "inside-out thinking" versus "outside-in thinking" when it comes to leadership. Inside-out thinking means defining problems before solutions, starting with the question "Why?" rather than "What?" or "How?".
2) Extraordinary leaders and companies tend to use inside-out thinking, while ordinary ones use outside-in. Starting with the core purpose or belief ("Why") allows one to better communicate their vision and inspire others.
3) The order of one's thoughts should be the order of their communication. Leaders should start by convincing others of the value or benefits of an idea, rather than just the specifications or features.
“Simon Sinek is an unshakable optimist. He believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together.” In this course we will be introduced to his idea of “The Golden Circle” helping individuals and organizations “find their why”. Sinek envisions a world “where people wake up every day inspired to go to work, feel safe while they are there, and return home at the end of the day feeling fulfilled by the work they do, feeling that they have contributed to something greater than themselves.” This course will get your juices flowing so you are inspired and enhance your ability to inspire others.
A collection of quotes from author, motivational speaker best known for popularizing the concept of "the golden circle" and to "Start With Why", described by TED as "a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership, Simon Sinek.
The document discusses the concepts of the Golden Circle, which are the levels of What, How, and Why that every organization should know. It states that every organization knows What they do through their products or services. Some organizations also know How they do it through their unique approaches. However, very few organizations truly understand Why they exist at their core purpose or belief beyond just making money. Understanding an organization's Why is key to the Golden Circle concept.
One of the most inspiring books of the last few years. And it is so true, that only with a clear WHY, you can actually make a difference.
The document is an abstract of the book Start with WHY from Simon Sinek. You should however absolutely read the book, which contains a lot of appealing cases.
Moore summarizes key leadership lessons from the movie The Godfather:
1) Build a loyal community by helping others without expectations of immediate returns, as Vito Corleone did by granting favors to others.
2) Hold people accountable for their performance and be willing to make tough decisions, as illustrated by Vito confronting weaknesses.
3) Make decisions based on what is best for business rather than emotions, as Michael warns Sonny about keeping business personal.
4) Act decisively once a choice is clear, as Don Corleone commands respect through unwavering leadership.
Every single organization on the planet, even our own careers, always function on three levels. What we do, How we do it and Why we do it.
When all those pieces are aligned, it gives us a filter through which to make decisions. It provides a foundation for innovation. When all three pieces are in balance, others will say, with absolute clarity and certainty,
“We know who you are,” “We know what you stand for.”
Whether they realize it or not, all great and inspiring leaders and organizations think, act and communicate just like each other…and it’s the complete opposite from everyone else.
The document discusses the importance of having a clear sense of purpose or "why" (WHY) in business. It argues that people don't buy what a company does (WHAT) but why it does it. Having a clear WHY allows a company to inspire loyalty and avoid relying on short-term manipulations. It also discusses the need for consistency (HOW) between a company's stated WHY and its actions, culture, products and marketing in order to be authentic. Without a clear WHY, companies cannot differentiate themselves or maintain lasting success.

Inspired Storytelling: Engaging People & Moving Them To ActionKelsey Ruger
Most projects, presentations or initiatives are driven by facts and features the team believes will help them deliver a product or message. While facts and data are important for setting the stage and communicating goals, they’re rarely what persuades an audience or gets them to take action.
In this workshop, you will learn how to use that connection, by teaching basic skills in visual thinking and storytelling that will that transform projects and initiate action.
The document discusses moving an organization from good to great. It outlines several key concepts from the book "Good to Great" for doing so, including having level 5 leadership, confronting brutal facts, developing a hedgehog concept, establishing a culture of discipline, and using technology accelerators. It emphasizes the importance of first getting the right people on the bus before deciding what to do, and how achieving greatness is more like pushing a heavy flywheel forward through consistent, small efforts over time rather than any single defining action.
This document discusses thinking outside the box and provides examples. It presents the classic problem of drawing 4 connected straight lines to link 9 dots, which can be solved with 5, 4, or 3 lines by thinking unconventionally. The example of Fosbury Flop is given, where Dick Fosbury revolutionized the scissor jump in high jump by going over the bar backwards instead of frontally, winning an Olympic gold medal. The document encourages thinking unconventionally, as thinking outside the established ways can lead to innovative solutions.
The document outlines Jim Collins' framework for transitioning a company from good to great, which includes having Level 5 Leadership, getting the right people on the bus, confronting brutal facts, developing a simple hedgehog concept, creating a culture of discipline, using technologies to accelerate the hedgehog concept, and allowing momentum to build through the flywheel effect. It also discusses how Collins' framework was applied in his subsequent book Built to Last to establish enduring great companies from the beginning.

Moonshot thinking is shooting for the moon. Moonshots live in the gray area between audacious projects and pure science fiction; they are 10X improvement, not 10%.
The document discusses Simon Sinek's concept of the Golden Circle, which proposes that people are inspired by leaders and companies that clearly articulate their purpose or "why" (inner circle), rather than simply describing what they do or how they do it (outer circles). It provides the examples of Samuel Langley and the Wright Brothers' attempts to build the first airplane, explaining that Langley focused on external goals like being first and funding while the Wright Brothers were driven internally by their shared belief in flight. The key message is that articulating a clear "why" allows one to inspire others.
The document provides a summary of the keynote presentations from the 2010 Tamarack CCI conference. The summaries highlight the following key points:
1. Thomas Homer-Dixon discussed the need for collaborative leadership to address complex problems, and shifting perspectives from seeing the world as machines to seeing it as complex systems.
2. John Ott discussed the concept of collective wisdom and how bringing diverse perspectives together can lead to insights beyond any individual.
3. Brenda Zimmerman discussed differentiating between simple, complicated, and complex problems and how an "act-learn" approach is needed to address complexity.
4. Anne Kubisch emphasized the importance of internal and external alignment in collaborative efforts to drive
This document introduces the concept of leaders who inspire versus those who simply motivate. It provides three examples of individuals and organizations that were able to inspire others through starting with why - the Wright brothers, who succeeded in achieving manned flight where better resourced teams failed; Steve Jobs and Apple, who revolutionized multiple industries through inspiring visions; and Martin Luther King Jr., who led the civil rights movement by inspiring millions with a vision of equality. These examples illustrate how starting with why allows some leaders to create loyal followings and have disproportionate influence through inspiring deeper purpose and meaning, rather than external incentives alone.
The document discusses how great leaders are able to inspire people to act, rather than simply motivate them through incentives or threats. It provides examples of the Wright brothers, Apple, and Martin Luther King Jr, who were able to inspire large groups of people through a shared purpose or vision. These leaders created a following of supporters who acted not because they had to, but because they wanted to. The document argues that while motivation can elicit behavior, true inspiration is more powerful and sustainable over the long term. It allows leaders to have disproportionate influence and create extremely loyal customers and employees.
Simon Sinek - Start with Why_ How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Acti...Hemin Hassan
The document introduces the concept of leaders who inspire versus those who simply motivate through incentives. It uses the examples of the Wright brothers, Apple, and Martin Luther King Jr. to show how they were able to inspire large groups of people to act for their visions. Though they faced challenges, they succeeded because they started with communicating their why - their sense of purpose or reason for being. In contrast, others who simply motivated with incentives or threats were unable to create lasting change or loyal followings. The ability to inspire is a pattern that can be learned in order to effectively lead others.

The document outlines Simon Sinek's "Golden Circle" theory of how successful leaders communicate their message. The Golden Circle explains that leaders think from the inside out, starting with their purpose or "why", then their method or "how", and finally their product or "what". In contrast, most people communicate from the outside in, starting with "what" they do. This document uses examples like Apple and Martin Luther King Jr. to illustrate how clearly communicating one's purpose can inspire loyalty and drive success, even more than resources or skills alone.
The document summarizes Scott Berkun's keynote presentation on the myths of innovation. Berkun aimed to identify popular beliefs about innovation that are untrue, why those myths became popular, and the real truths about innovation and how to apply them. Some of the myths addressed include the idea of epiphanies, that history is well understood, and that people always like innovations. Berkun emphasized that innovation is a social process based on psychology and sociology rather than just technology. He also provided tips for delegating responsibility, taking risks, and rewarding initiative.

Discover how great leaders create meaningful opportunities for challenge and growth
People and organizations grow and develop when they intentionally pursue goals and challenges that stretch their skills and test their mettle. This workshop focuses on aligning the needs of the organization with the career aspirations of those they lead. Great leaders are opportunity-creators; they "open doors" of opportunity for others.
Drawing on the concepts introduced in the bestselling leadership training book, Leaders Open Doors (ATD Press, 2014), participants learn radically simple ways to help people and organizations grow by creating challenging and meaningful opportunities. The emphasis is on equipping participants with specific actions and take aways that can be immediately applied back on the job. A leader has two primary jobs; 1. Leave the organization better off than you found it, and 2. Leave people better off than you found them. This webinar will help leaders accomplish both!
The Key to Great Teams: Understanding the Human Operating SystemAtlassian
How do organizations become adaptive, agile, and resilient? What fosters trust and makes people feel safe to speak their minds? Stefan Knecht from it-economics – a 2016 Best Workplaces in Germany award recipient – say the master key lies in a social operating system used for over 300,000 years: the human operating system (OS H). Recent findings from behavioral, cognitive, and organizational sciences help us understand parts of this system – like what makes humans tick and how groups successfully form and perform. This talk will explain the idea behind OS H and teach you how you can employ the concept in your own organization to build trust, resiliency, adaptivity, etc. Come away with a solid understanding of social needs and the company dynamics you can help create to meet these needs. Even the best tools and technology will only get you part of the way to building world-class teams.

Beyond the Advance Presentation for By the Book 9John Rodzvilla
In June 2020, L.L. McKinney, a Black author of young adult novels, began the #publishingpaidme hashtag to create a discussion on how the publishing industry treats Black authors: “what they’re paid. What the marketing is. How the books are treated. How one Black book not reaching its parameters casts a shadow on all Black books and all Black authors, and that’s not the same for our white counterparts.” (Grady 2020) McKinney’s call resulted in an online discussion across 65,000 tweets between authors of all races and the creation of a Google spreadsheet that collected information on over 2,000 titles.
While the conversation was originally meant to discuss the ethical value of book publishing, it became an economic assessment by authors of how publishers treated authors of color and women authors without a full analysis of the data collected. This paper would present the data collected from relevant tweets and the Google database to show not only the range of advances among participating authors split out by their race, gender, sexual orientation and the genre of their work, but also the publishers’ treatment of their titles in terms of deal announcements and pre-pub attention in industry publications. The paper is based on a multi-year project of cleaning and evaluating the collected data to assess what it reveals about the habits and strategies of American publishers in acquiring and promoting titles from a diverse group of authors across the literary, non-fiction, children’s, mystery, romance, and SFF genres.
