Types of business communication (Email)Pushkar Joshi
Email is an electronic communication method that allows sending messages, pictures, and documents quickly within seconds. While Ray Tomlinson is widely credited with inventing email in 1971, Shiva Ayyadurai claims to have invented email in 1978 with his own program. However, Ayyadurai's claim is disputed as it relies on narrow definitions of what constitutes email. Common email clients include Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail, which people use to stay connected with others and share important information conveniently without physical interaction or high costs compared to traditional mail.

Web-based email, also known as webmail, refers to email services accessed through a web browser rather than an email client. Some popular webmail providers include Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail. Webmail has advantages like accessibility from any internet-connected computer and not taking up disk space like desktop email clients. However, webmail also has disadvantages like needing an internet connection to access emails and not allowing the use of desktop email clients. Desktop email clients have advantages like always being able to access emails with just an internet connection and being able to use multiple computers without compromising the ability to see all messages. But desktop email clients also have disadvantages such as taking up disk space and not providing built-in virus protection.

It summarizes that global mobile messaging traffic is forecasted to nearly double between 2012 and 2017, driven primarily by growth in over-the-top instant messaging services. Major players in the instant messaging market are described, and it is noted that over $300 million has been invested in instant messaging startups since 2003. Acquisition and IPO exit opportunities in the instant messaging market are also reviewed.
This document presents a secure instant messaging key exchange protocol (IMKE) to provide authentication, confidentiality, and integrity for instant messaging communications. It describes existing IM security solutions and their drawbacks. IMKE uses password-based authentication between clients and a server, then establishes separate session keys for client-server and client-client communications using public key encryption. This allows messages to be securely transmitted while preventing the server from accessing message contents. The protocol provides security properties like mutual identity assurance, forward secrecy, and repudiation. It is analyzed to be secure against common attacks while remaining practical for integration into existing IM systems.
WhatsUp With WhatsApp? Comparing Mobile Instant Messaging Behaviors with Trad...Karen Church
Our best paper nominee presentation at Mobile HCI 2013, Munich, Germany (30th August 2013). Here's the paper abstract:
With the advent of instant mobile messaging applications, traditional SMS is in danger of loosing it’s reign as the king of mobile messaging. Applications like WhatsApp allow mobile users to send real-time text messages to individuals or groups of friends at no cost. While there is a vast body of research on traditional text messaging practices, little is understood about how and why people have adopted and appropriated instant mobile messaging applications. The goal of this work is to provide a deeper understanding of the motives and perceptions of a popular mobile messaging application called WhatsApp and to learn more about what this service offers above and beyond traditional SMS. To this end, we present insights from two studies — an interview study and a large-scale survey — highlighting that while WhatsApp offers benefits such as cost, sense of community and immediacy, SMS is still considered a more reliable, privacy preserving technology for mobile communication

Instant Messaging is a form of real-time communication between users online. It allows users to see if contacts are available and chat with them instantly. While early instant messaging predated the internet on multi-user systems in the 1960s, it grew popular in the 1990s following predecessors like internet relay chat and multi-user dungeons. Instant messaging uses a client-server model where clients communicate with a server to locate other users and exchange encrypted messages. While useful for social and work communication, instant messaging poses security risks if not properly configured within an organization.

Libraries have been offering programming for decades, and in many cases the model has been, "Let’s plan a program, promote it, and see who shows up." This approach hasn’t changed much, even with social and technological changes, not to mention the pandemic and streaming programs. Program planning with a marketing mindset starts with identifying your customer’s needs and wants, then developing programs and services to meet those needs and wants. We’ll discuss how to use research – quantitative and qualitative – to plan and market programs that will engage your customers. We’ll talk about "bundling" programs and services for different audience segments. We’ll also cover how this more strategic approach can save time and resources for your library.
