Dapr.io is an open source product, originated from Microsoft and embraced by a broad coalition of cloud suppliers (part of CNFC) and open source projects. Dapr is a runtime framework that can support any application and that especially shines with distributed applications - for example microservices - that run in containers, spread over clouds and / or edge devices. With Dapr you give an application a "sidecar" - a kind of personal assistant that takes care of all kinds of common responsibilities. Capturing and retrieving state, publishing and consuming messages or events. Reading secrets and configuration data. Shielding and load balancing over service endpoints. Calling and subscribing to all kinds of SaaS and PaaS facilities. Logging traces across all kinds of application components and logically routing calls between microservices and other application components. Dapr provides generic APIs to the application (HTTP and gRPC) for calling all these generic services – and provides implementations of these APIs for all public clouds and dozens of technology components. This means that your application can easily make use of a wide range of relevant features - with a strict separation between the language the application uses for this (generic, simple) and the configuration of the specific technology (e.g. Redis, MySQL, CosmosDB, Cassandra, PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, MongoDB, Azure SQL etc) that the Dapr sidecar uses. Changing technology does not affect the application, but affects the configuration of the Sidecar. Dapr can be used from applications in any technology - from Java and C#/.NET to Go, Python, Node, Rust and PHP. Or whatever can talk HTTP (or gRPC). In this Code Café I will introduce you to Dapr.io. I will show you what Dapr can do for you (application) and how you can Dapr-izen an application. I'll show you how an asynchronously collaborative system of microservices - implemented in different technologies - can be easily connected to Dapr, first to Redis as a Pub/Sub mechanism and then also to Apache Kafka without modifications. Then we do - with the interested parties - also a hands-on in which you will apply Dapr yourself . In a short time you get a good feel for how you can use Dapr for different aspects of your applications. Imran Microservices, RESTful and API-first architectures are rage these days and rightfully so, they solve some of the challenges of modern application development. Microservices enable organisations in shipping code to production faster and is accomplished by dividing big monolithic applications into smaller but specialised applications. Though they provide great benefits, they are difficult to debug and secure in complex environments (different API versions, multiple API calls and frontend/backend gaps etc.,). GraphQL provides a powerful way to solve some of these challenges but with great power, comes great responsibility. GraphQL reduces the attack surface drastically(thanks to LangSec) but there are still many things which can go wrong. This talk will cover the risks associated with GraphQL, challenges and solutions, which help in implementing Secure GraphQL based APIs. We will start off with introduction to GraphQL and its benefits. We then discuss the difficulty in securing these applications and why traditional security scanners don’t work with them. At last, we will cover solutions which help in securing these API by shifting left in DevOps pipeline. The Internet of Things (IoT) is all about connected devices that produce and exchange data, and building applications that produce insights from these high volumes of data is very challenging and require a understanding of multiple protocols, platforms and other components. On this session, we will start by providing a quick introduction to IoT, some of the common analytic patterns used on IoT, and also touch on the MQTT protocol and how it is used by IoT solutions some of the quality of services tradeoffs to be considered when building an IoT application. We will also discuss some of the Apache Spark platform components, the ones utilized by IoT applications to process devices streaming data. We will also talk about Apache Bahir and some of its IoT connectors available for the Apache Spark platform. We will also go over the details on how to build, test and deploy an IoT application for Apache Spark using the MQTT data source for the new Apache Spark Structure Streaming functionality.

Presentation of the paper "Aligning Web Services with the Semantic Web to Create a Global Read-Write Graph of Data" gave at the 9th IEEE European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS 2011) in Lugano, Switzerland. Despite significant research and development efforts, the vision of the Semantic Web yielding to a Web of Data has not yet become reality. Even though initiatives such as Linking Open Data gained traction recently, the Web of Data is still clearly outpaced by the growth of the traditional, document-based Web. Instead of releasing data in the form of RDF, many publishers choose to publish their data in the form of Web services. The reasons for this are manifold. Given that RESTful Web services closely resemble the document-based Web, they are not only perceived as less complex and disruptive, but also provide read-write interfaces to the underlying data. In contrast, the current Semantic Web is essentially read-only which clearly inhibits net-working effects and engagement of the crowd. On the other hand, the prevalent use of proprietary schemas to represent the data published by Web services inhibits generic browsers or crawlers to access and understand this data; the consequence are islands of data instead of a global graph of data forming the envisioned Semantic Web. We thus propose a novel approach to integrate Web services into the Web of Data by introducing an algorithm to translate SPARQL queries to HTTP requests. The aim is to create a global read-write graph of data and to standardize the mashup development process. We try to keep the approach as familiar and simple as possible to lower the entry barrier and foster the adoption of our approach. Thus, we based our proposal on SEREDASj, a semantic description language for RESTful data services, for making proprietary JSON service schemas accessible.

It will cover technologies and methodologies for automatically assessing the context and potential impact of vulnerabilities, facilitating quicker and more accurate decision-making. The use of automated alerting and reporting mechanisms to ensure the right stakeholders are informed in a timely manner will also be discussed. Identifying Ownership Automatically: Automating the process of identifying who owns the responsibility for fixing specific security issues is critical for efficient remediation. This part of the lecture will explore tools and practices for mapping vulnerabilities to code owners, leveraging version control and project management tools. Three Tips to Scale the Shift Left Program: Finally, the lecture will offer three practical tips for organizations looking to scale their Shift Left security programs. The project is called openTelemetry, but before diving into the specifics, we’ll start with de-mystifying key concepts and terms such as observability, telemetry, instrumentation, cardinality, percentile to lay a foundation. After understanding the nuts and bolts of observability and distributed traces, we’ll explore the openTelemetry community; its Special Interest Groups (SIGs), repositories, and how to become not only an end-user, but possibly a contributor.We will wrap up with an overview of the components in this project, such as the Collector, the OpenTelemetry protocol (OTLP), its APIs, and its SDKs. Attendees will leave with an understanding of key observability concepts, become grounded in distributed tracing terminology, be aware of the components of openTelemetry, and know how to take their first steps to an open-source contribution! However, especially with the rise of supply-chain attacks, there are some aspects of our projects that we really shouldn’t document, and should instead remediate as vulnerabilities. If we do document these aspects of a project, it may help someone compromise the project itself or our users. In this talk, you will learn why some aspects of documentation may help attackers more than users, how to recognize those aspects in your own projects, and what to do when you encounter such an issue. HTTP Adaptive Streaming – Quo Vadis (2024)

Video traffic on the Internet is constantly growing; networked multimedia applications consume a predominant share of the available Internet bandwidth. A major technical breakthrough and enabler in multimedia systems research and of industrial networked multimedia services certainly was the HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) technique. This resulted in the standardization of MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) which, together with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), is widely used for multimedia delivery in today’s networks. Existing challenges in multimedia systems research deal with the trade-off between (i) the ever-increasing content complexity, (ii) various requirements with respect to time (most importantly, latency), and (iii) quality of experience (QoE). Optimizing towards one aspect usually negatively impacts at least one of the other two aspects if not both. This situation sets the stage for our research work in the ATHENA Christian Doppler (CD) Laboratory (Adaptive Streaming over HTTP and Emerging Networked Multimedia Services; https://athena.itec.aau.at/), jointly funded by public sources and industry. In this talk, we will present selected novel approaches and research results of the first year of the ATHENA CD Lab’s operation. We will highlight HAS-related research on (i) multimedia content provisioning (machine learning for video encoding); (ii) multimedia content delivery (support of edge processing and virtualized network functions for video networking); (iii) multimedia content consumption and end-to-end aspects (player-triggered segment retransmissions to improve video playout quality); and (iv) novel QoE investigations (adaptive point cloud streaming). We will also put the work into the context of international multimedia systems research.
