In recent years, research efforts tried to exploit peer-to-peer (P2P) systems in order to provide Live Streaming (LS) and Video-on-Demand (VoD) services. Most of these research efforts focus on the development of distributed P2P block schedulers for content exchange among the participating peers and on the characteristics of the overlay graph (P2P overlay) that interconnects the set of these peers.Currently, researchers try to combine peer-to-peer systems with cloud infrastructures. They developed monitoring and control architectures that use resources from the cloud in order to enhance QoS and achieve an attractive trade-off between stability and low cost operation. However, there is a lack of
research effort on the congestion control of these systems and the existing congestion control architectures are not suitable for P2P live streaming traffic (small sequential non persistent traffic towards multiple network locations). This paper proposes a P2P live streaming traffic aware congestion control protocol that: i) is capable to manage sequential traffic heading to multiple network destinations , ii) efficiently exploits the available bandwidth, iii) accurately measures the idle peer resources, iv) avoids network congestion, and v) is friendly to traditional TCP generated traffic.The proposed P2P congestion control has been implemented, tested and evaluated through a series of real experiments powered across the BonFIRE infrastructure.

This document presents a simulation analysis of a new startup algorithm for TCP New Reno to improve responsiveness for short-lived applications. The proposed TCP SYN Loss (TSL) startup algorithm uses a less conservative congestion response than standard TCP when connection setup packets are lost. Simulations are conducted using the ns-2 network simulator to evaluate the performance of TSL variants under different levels of congestion. The main results show that TSL variants can achieve an average latency gain of 15 round-trip times compared to standard TCP at up to 90% link utilization with a packet loss rate of 1%.

To overcome the problem of unknown flow classification and achieve effective network classification, a new innovative novel work called Multi Stage Fine-Grained classifier is proposed in this research for classifying the VoIP traffic flow with high accurate classification. The datasets of VoIP network traffic measurements taken from our campus WI-FI and the experimental results shows that the proposed work outstrips the existing approaches in the Rapid flow Internet Backbone. Without investigate the packet payloads, our proposed Fine-Grained classifier effectively classifies the Peer-to-Peer encrypted traffic in the real time network. Our experimental results shows high accuracy and small error rate in classifying the Peer-to-Peer network traffic.

DPI-BASED CONGESTION CONTROL METHOD FOR SERVERS AND NETWORK LINESIJCNCJournal
The use of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) equipment in a network could simplify the conventional workload
for system management and accelerate the control action. The authors proposed a congestion control
method that uses DPI equipment installed in a network to estimate overload conditions of servers or
network lines and, upon detecting an overload condition, resolves congestion by moving some virtual
machines to other servers or rerouting some communication flows to other routes. However, since the
previous paper was focused on confirming the effectiveness of using DPI technology, it assumed some
restrictive control conditions.
This paper proposes to enhance the existing DPI-based congestion control, in order to dynamically select
an optimal solution for cases where there are multiple candidates available for: virtual machines to be
moved, physical servers to which virtual machines are to be moved, communication flows to be diverted,
and routes to which communication flows are to be diverted. This paper also considers server congestion
for cases where computing power congestion and bandwidth congestion occur simultaneously in a server,
and line congestion for cases where the maximum allowable network delay of each communication flow is
taken into consideration. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed methods is demonstrated by an evaluation
system with real DPI equipment.

Multimedia streaming of mostly user generated content is an ongoing trend, not only since the upcoming of Last.fm and YouTube. A distributed decentralized multimedia streaming architecture can spread the (traffic) costs to the user nodes, but requires to provide for load balancing and consider the heterogeneity of the participating nodes. We propose a DHT-based information gathering and analyzing architecture which controls the streaming request assignment in the system and thoroughly evaluate it in comparison to a distributed stateless strategy. We evaluated the impact of the key parameters in the allocation function which considers the capabilities of the nodes and their contribution to the system. Identifying the quality-bandwidth tradeoffs of the information gathering system, we show that with our proposed system a 53% better load balancing can be reached and the efficiency of the system is significantly improved.

The protocol uses an hop-by-hop authentication scheme using elliptic curve cryptography where each user generates a public/private key pair. When a source node wants to transmit data, it generates a digital signature for the message using its private key. Intermediate nodes can verify the signature using the source's public key to authenticate the message. The protocol is evaluated experimentally and results show it can effectively provide security and reliability for wireless data transmission.

To this end we support a phased approach to "activating" the Internet and suggest that there exists an immediate need for realizing Active Networks concepts at the network edges. In this context, we present our efforts towards the development of a Content-aware Active Gateway (CAG) architecture. With the help of two practical services running on our initial prototype, built from commercial networking devices, we give a qualitative and quantitative view of the CAG potential.

Wireless links losses result in poor TCP throughput since losses are perceived as congestion by TCP with the evolution of 3G technologies like Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), the usage of TCP has become more popular for a reliable end-to-end (e2e) data delivery. However, TCP was initially designed for wired networks and therefore it suffers performance degradation due to the radio signal getting affected by fading, shadowing and interference. There are many strategies proposed by the research community on how to improve the performance of TCP over wireless links such as introducing link-layer retransmission, explicitly notifying the sender of network conditions or using new variants of TCP. As UMTS network coverage and availability are currently experiencing rapid growth, optimization of various internal components of its wireless network is very important. One of the optimization is the introduction of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). This architecture not only allows higher data rates but also more reliable data transfer by the introduction of Hybrid ARQ (HARQ). With this enhancement to the UMTS network, it becomes vital to see the performance of TCP in such a network. Therefore in this thesis, we try to evaluate two aspects of UMTS networks: first, the impact of HSDPA parameters like scheduling algorithm and RLC/MAC-hs buffer size on overall performance of TCP and second, to study the behaviour of two categories of TCP rate and flow control: loss based and delay based. Our simulation shows that delay based TCP tends to perform better than loss based TCP in our selected scenarios. The simulations are performed using the network simulator NS-2 with an e2e network model for enhanced UMTS (EURANE).

Abstract:
HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is employed by more and more video streaming services in the Internet. It allows to adapt the downloaded video quality to the current network conditions, and thus, avoids stalling (i.e., playback interruptions) to the greatest possible extend. The adaptation of video streams is done by switching between different quality representation levels, which influences the user perceived quality of the video stream. In this work, the influence of several adaptation parameters, namely, switch amplitude (i.e., quality level difference), switching frequency, and recency effects, on Quality of Experience (QoE) is investigated. Therefore, crowdsourcing experiments were conducted in order to collect subjective ratings for different adaptation-related test conditions. The results of these subjective studies indicate the influence of the adaptation parameters, and based on these findings a simplified QoE model for HAS is presented, which only relies on the switch amplitude and the playback time of each layer.

However, so far in modern mobile operating systems, such as Android and iOS, there is no available method in the public developer’s Application Programming Interface (API), which allows for an automatic and on-demand selection of the MNO by third- party applications. Recently, various research approaches assume the existence of an automatic and on-demand MNO selection mechanism to achieve different goals, such as breaking the termination rates monopoly (AbaCUS) or minimizing the non-ionizing radiation of mobile/wearable devices. The interest of such a mechanism has been raised three years ago by the Android developers community. Thus, this work here presents an automatic and on-demand MNO selection mechanism, that has been designed and implemented on the Android platform. For evaluation purposes the energy and end-to-end (e2e) time consumption while switching among MNOs using this mechanism is evaluated and as an applied example the data consumption of AbaCUS signaling messages is measured.
Evaluation of Caching Strategies Based on Access Statistics on Past RequestsSmartenIT
The document evaluates caching strategies, including the standard Least Recently Used (LRU) strategy. It finds that LRU has deficits in cache hit rate compared to optimal strategies, especially for small caches. Statistics-based strategies that consider request frequency over a sliding window or with geometric weighting of past requests can converge to the optimal hit rate for static popularity distributions. Simulations confirm these strategies outperform LRU for realistic workloads.

Abstract:
The estimation of psychological properties of relationships (e.g., popularity, influence, or trust) only from objective data in online social networks (OSNs) is a rather vague approach. A subjective assessment produces more accurate results, but it requires very complex and cumbersome surveys. The key contribution of this paper is a framework for personalized surveys on relationships in OSNs which follows a gamification approach. A game was developed and integrated into Facebook as an app, which makes it possible to obtain subjective ratings of users' relationships and objective data about the users, their interactions, and their social network. The combination of both subjective and objective data facilitates a deeper understanding of the psychological properties of relationships in OSNs, and lays the foundations for future research of subjective aspects within OSNs.
Talk on "Socially-aware Traffic Management" given by Michael Seufert (http://www3.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/staff/michael.seufert/) at the workshop Sozioinformatik 2013 (http://www.sozioinformatik2013.de/, organized by Katharina Anna Zweig; held in conjunction with Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Informatik (INFORMATIK 2013)). The workshop addressed questions evolving around the interplay between social and technical systems, and bridged the gap from social sciences to computer sciences. The workshop talks gave an overview on different aspects of interactions between humans and IT-systems, and highlighted the need for a combination of social sciences and computer science in this field. The workshop showed that it is possible and sometimes necessary to integrate social studies into the design and application of IT-systems. This applies to SmartenIT especially in the context of socially-aware traffic management.

Abstract:
Socially-aware traffic management exploits social signals to optimize traffic management in the Internet in terms of traffic load, energy consumption, or end-user satisfaction. Several use cases can benefit from socially-aware traffic management and the performance of overlay applications can be enhanced. In the talk we show interdisciplinary efforts between communication networks and social network analysis. Specifically, we give an overview on existing use cases and solutions, but also raise discussions at the workshop on additional benefits from the integration of social information into traffic management.
This document discusses 2-state Markov models and their use in modeling traffic variability and channel error profiles. It presents formulations for the second order statistics of 2-state Gilbert-Elliott channels, Markov processes, and semi-Markov processes. Measurement data from various traffic types is fitted using these models to demonstrate how a 2-state semi-Markov process with 6 parameters provides the best fit for the measured variability over time scales from 1ms to 10s. More complex models like the Gilbert-Elliott and self-similar processes have less flexibility with only one parameter for fitting second order statistics.
This document proposes a non-monetary algorithm for fairly allocating multiple resources among consumers. The Greediness Alignment Algorithm works as follows: In each round, consumers demand resource bundles. Greediness is calculated based on proportionality and fed back. After the final round, bundles are allocated and trimmed if resources are scarce, incentivizing fair demands. The algorithm aims to provide both guaranteed equal shares and flexible allocation of leftover resources in a scalable and fair manner without monetary compensation.

what extent their organisation adopts with cloud computing, the level of cloud computing usage, current use of
cloud service model, usage of cloud deployment model, preferred cloud service providers and reasons for adopting
and not adopting cloud computing. The study also describes why cloud computing is a solution for new normal
situations and the cloud-enabled services used during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The finding suggests
that 87.7% of the organisations currently use cloud-enabled services, whereas 12.3% do not and intend to adopt.
Considering the benefits, cloud computing is the solution post COVID-19 pandemic to run the business way
