CloudFlare operates a global anycast content delivery network (CDN) to improve website performance and security. Their network routes web traffic through data centers located around the world, where services like caching, security filtering, and optimizations are applied. Anycast routing allows a client to connect to the closest data center, and if that location fails traffic will automatically reroute to the next closest one. Operating an anycast CDN presents challenges around efficient routing, new market deployments, and troubleshooting unusual routing behaviors between networks. Peering is important for reachability but must be considered economically in each region.

Hardware fails, applications fail, our code... well, it fails too (at least mine). To prevent software failure we test. Hardware failures are inevitable, so we write code that tolerates them, then we test. From tests we gather metrics and act upon them by improving parts that perform inadequately. Measuring right things at right places in an application is as much about good engineering practices and maintaining SLAs as it is about end user experience and may differentiate successful product from a failure.
In order to act on performance metrics such as max latency and consistent response times we need to know their accurate value. The problem with such metrics is that when using popular tools we get results that are not only inaccurate but also too optimistic.
During my presentation I will simulate services that require monitoring and show how gathered metrics differ from real numbers. All this while using what currently seems to be most popular metric pipeline - Graphite together with com.codahale metrics library - and get completely false results. We will learn to tune it and get much better accuracy. We will use JMeter to measure latency and observe how falsely reassuring the results are. We will check how graphite averages data just to helplessly watch important latency spikes disappear. Finally I will show how HdrHistogram helps in gathering reliable metrics. We will also run tests measuring performance of different metric classes

Das Gesetz der großen Zahlen gilt immer: Die statistische Sicherheit nimmt mit der Anzahl der Datenpunkte immer zu, sofern die Datennahme fair erfolgt. Leider kostet das Sammeln der Daten oftmals Geld, und so ist man vor allem im Bereich der Sensorik (Stichwort: Internet der Dinge) gezwungen, sinnvolle Kompromisse einzugehen. In diesem Vortrag fasse ich die Erkenntnisse eines Projekts zusammen, in dem die Datenanalytik zeigte, dass man zukünftig nur 60% der ausgebrachten Sensoren wirklich braucht. Auch muss es nicht immer Echtzeit-Analyse sein: Mit einer auf den Business-Case abgestimmten Datenstrategie lassen sich unnötige Ausgaben vermeiden.
Everybody Lies
Hardware fails, applications fail, our code... well, it fails too (at least mine). To prevent software failure we test. Hardware failures are inevitable, so we write code that tolerates them, then we test. From tests we gather metrics and act upon them by improving parts that perform inadequately. Measuring right things at right places in an application is as much about good engineering practices and maintaining SLAs as it is about end user experience and may differentiate successful product from a failure.
In order to act on performance metrics such as max latency and consistent response times we need to know their accurate value. The problem with such metrics is that when using popular tools we get results that are not only inaccurate but also too optimistic.
During my presentation I will simulate services that require monitoring and show how gathered metrics differ from real numbers. All this while using what currently seems to be most popular metric pipeline - Graphite together with metrics.dropwizard.io library - and get completely false results. We will learn to tune it and get much better accuracy. We will use JMeter to measure latency and observe how falsely reassuring the results are. Finally I will show how HdrHistogram helps in gathering reliable metrics. We will also run tests measuring performance of different metric classes.

We are entering a data-rich era. Advanced computing, imaging, and sensing technologies enable scientists to study natural and physical phenomena at unprecedented precision, resulting in an explosive growth of data. The size of the collected information about the Web and mobile device users is expected to be even greater. To make sense and maximize utilization of such vast amounts of data for knowledge discovery and decision making, we need a new set of tools beyond conventional data mining and statistical analysis. One such a tool is visualization. I will present visualizations designed for gleaning insight from massive data and guiding complex data analysis tasks. I will show case studies using data from cyber/homeland security, large-scale scientific simulations, medicine, and sociological studies.

Flow questions and answers
Netflow records network traffic metadata like source, destination, protocol, and duration of communications without inspecting traffic contents. This allows analysis of network usage patterns to identify bottlenecks, leaks, and attacks. While netflow reveals metadata, actual email contents remain private. Netflow is generated by network devices and collected by software that can provide aggregated traffic statistics or detailed records for forensic analysis. Placement of collection points is important to observe relevant traffic.

Much has changed in the last decade: open source is pervasive in infrastructure software, with many companies (like our hosts!) having significant open source components from their inception. But just as open source has changed, the corporate anti-patterns around open source have changed too: where the challenges of the previous decade were all around how to open source existing products (and how to engage with existing communities), the challenges now seem to revolve around how to thrive as a business without betraying the community that made it one in the first place.
