Join Rick Wilson, President of Miva Merchant as he discusses the explosive growth in tablets and how you need to be making changes to your site now along with things you need to consider as you redesign your ecommerce web site in the future.
The Rise Of Tablets: Responsive Web Design is in your futureRick Wilson
Responsive web design uses flexible layouts and CSS media queries to automatically adjust web page content for viewing on different devices like tablets, smartphones and desktops. It allows for a single website that responds to the user's device without the need for a separate mobile site. Tablets are becoming increasingly important for ecommerce as 42% of tablet owners have used their device to purchase an item compared to 29% for smartphones. Responsive design offers benefits like a single code base to maintain but has initial higher development costs and updates must be tested across devices.
This document discusses considerations for designing websites for mobile devices. It notes that mobile traffic now accounts for over a third of total web traffic. Key recommendations include using flexible, fluid designs; keeping important content above the fold; avoiding Flash; using mobile-friendly fonts and HTML5/CSS3; ensuring easy navigation; and creating a separate mobile-optimized stylesheet. Specific examples are provided of sites that need mobile improvements, such as sites that rely on Flash or have cluttered designs not suited for small screens.
Designing for the web is no longer what it used to be.
The number of devices with web-browsing capabilities is
growing at an increasing speed.

Native Device vs. Mobile Web ApplicationsTim Wright
Native mobile apps are downloaded to a device, built for that specific platform using languages like Objective-C or Java, and can access device features. Mobile web apps live on the web, are accessible via browser, and are built using HTML/CSS/JS. Native apps are best for utilizing device capabilities like gaming or sensors, while mobile web apps allow for lower costs, rapid updates across devices, and accessibility without downloads. The document provides examples of when each type of app is most suitable.
Web Apps and Responsive Design for LibrariesMatt Machell
This document discusses responsive web design for libraries. It argues that responsive web design, which creates a single website that adapts to different screen sizes through flexible grids and media queries, is the best approach for libraries to take for their mobile presence. Native apps, separate mobile sites, and other approaches each have drawbacks, as they require more maintenance and do not allow for a unified experience across all devices. The document advocates for a responsive design that can provide a quality experience on any device using existing web skills.
This document discusses the differences between web apps and websites. It argues that while users are accustomed to native apps on mobile, web technologies can be used to create an app-like experience. Specifically, web apps should mimic the app lifecycle of downloading, installing, having a home screen icon, and taking the full screen. The document also covers key aspects of designing web apps, such as using single-page interfaces, viewport management for different screen sizes and orientations, and handling touch and click events consistently across platforms.
The document discusses best practices for creating mobile-friendly websites. It notes that as smartphone and tablet usage increases, websites need to be usable across different devices. It recommends using coding that works on all platforms, testing URLs in different browsers, and using content management systems designed for mobile. Proper mobile design involves understanding progressive enhancement and graceful degradation techniques as well as how mobile sites differ from desktop sites in areas like coding languages and layout.

APM event held on 9 July in Bristol.
Speaker: Roy Millard
The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome back to Bristol Roy Millard, of APM’s Assurance Interest Group on 9 July 2024, to talk about project reviews and hopefully answer all your questions.
Roy outlined his extensive career and his experience in setting up the APM’s Assurance Specific Interest Group, as they were known then.
Using Mentimeter, he asked a number of questions of the audience about their experience of project reviews and what they wanted to know.
Roy discussed what a project review was and examined a number of definitions, including APM’s Bok: “Project reviews take place throughout the project life cycle to check the likely or actual achievement of the objectives specified in the project management plan”
Why do we do project reviews? Different stakeholders will have different views about this, but usually it is about providing confidence that the project will deliver the expected outputs and benefits, that it is under control.
There are many types of project reviews, including peer reviews, internal audit, National Audit Office, IPA, etc.
Roy discussed the principles behind the Three Lines of Defence Model:, First line looks at management controls, policies, procedures, Second line at compliance, such as Gate reviews, QA, to check that controls are being followed, and third Line is independent external reviews for the organisations Board, such as Internal Audit or NAO audit.
Factors which affect project reviews include the scope, level of independence, customer of the review, team composition and time.
Project Audits are a special type of project review. They are generally more independent, formal with clear processes and audit trails, with a greater emphasis on compliance. Project reviews are generally more flexible and informal, but should be evidence based and have some level of independence.
Roy looked at 2 examples of where reviews went wrong, London Underground Sub-Surface Upgrade signalling contract, and London’s Garden Bridge. The former had poor 3 lines of defence, no internal audit and weak procurement skills, the latter was a Boris Johnson vanity project with no proper governance due to Johnson’s pressure and interference.
Roy discussed the principles of assurance reviews from APM’s Guide to Integrated Assurance (Free to Members), which include: independence, accountability, risk based, and impact, etc
Human factors are important in project reviews. The skills and knowledge of the review team, building trust with the project team to avoid defensiveness, body language, and team dynamics, which can only be assessed face to face, active listening, flexibility and objectively.
