Who Should Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Estonian Embassy/Consulate/VAC?
If Estonia is the only country in the Schengen Area you plan to visit, it’s straightforward – apply at the Estonian embassy/consulate or the authorized Visa Application Center (VAC) in your country of residence.
However, if your journey includes Estonia and at least one more Schengen state, apply at the Estonian embassy/consulate/VAC in your country of residence only if:
You will spend more days in Estonia than in the other Schengen countries.
You will spend an equal amount of time in each country, but you are starting your Schengen adventure by entering through Estonia.
You can’t apply for a short-stay Estonian visa from a country where you are currently on a short-stay visa. You must hold a residence permit in the country where you are applying.
For more in-depth details, please refer to: How to Choose the Right Embassy/Consulate/VAC to Submit the Visa Application

Schedule Your Visa Appointment
To book an appointment with the Estonian diplomatic missions (embassy/consulate), visit the official booking website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here.
There you will be directed to select the representation where you will submit your Schengen visa application.
*Each applicant, including children, must book their own separate appointment.
Make the Appointment
- VFS Global. If applying through VFS Global, you can typically book your appointment online through the VFS Global website. You can book your appointment through VFS Global if you are from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, China, Nepal, Ukraine, Egypt, Oman, United Arab Emirates, India, Russian, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, United States, Iran, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, or Israel.
- You will have to book your appointment with the Estonian Embassy or another Schengen Embassy to whom Estonia has delegated visa processing, if you are from anywhere else.
How to Book an Appointment?
Choose the representation where you will submit your Schengen visa application.
Select the service you want to book an appointment for. In this case, you must select “Schengen visa (C-visa) application.”
Sometimes your country may not have an option for a Schengen visa application to book an appointment, as seen here:
In this case, you will most likely need to book an appointment with an external visa application centre, like VFS Global.
If that is not the case, then continue to provide the required information, such as your full name, date of birth, phone number, email address, and the pre-filled visa application number, which you received in your email when filling out the online application form.
Finally, confirm your appointment if there are available open slots. You will receive an email confirming your appointment along with a link for cancellation. Please ensure to attend the appointment on time.
When Should I Book My Appointment?
You are allowed to book your appointment as early as 15 days before your travel date and no earlier than 6 months before. However, you are advised to schedule your appointment at least a month or three months in advance.
This way, you will have enough time to consider any possible delays in your visa processing. While official processing times are valid, unpredictable delays can often occur.
How Can I Change or Cancel My Appointment?
After you book and confirm your appointment, you will be provided with a link to cancel it. Please note that cancellations are compulsory, and if you booked an appointment before but did not cancel or show up, the embassy can cancel your future appointments at any given time.
Please note that if you booked your appointment via an external visa application centre or another Schengen embassy, you must follow their cancellation instructions.
Prepare the Required Documents
To submit a successful application, you need to prepare a number of documents, which include the following:
- Your printed and signed visa application form.
- Your passport.
- Schengen visa travel insurance.
- Proof of financial means during your stay.
- All other general Schengen visa documents.
Please ensure that you have all the documents with you since you may risk getting your visa denied if something is missing from your application.
Understanding the Requirement for Travel Insurance
Travel Medical Insurance is compulsory for Schengen visas under Regulation (EU) 2009/810 of the European Parliament.
Estonian visa applicants can obtain visa insurance from either Europ Assistance or vti.travel, a European insurance comparison website, comparing insurance policies of AXA, Allianz, Europ Assistance and Mutuaide.
These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by Estonian Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of Estonian visa rejection.
How Much Money Do I Need to Enter Estonia?
You need to provide proof that you have at least EUR 70 per day to spend in Estonia as well as proof of financial means to support your journey home.
Attend Your Appointment
On the day of your visa appointment, you must visit an Estonian embassy or another representative in your country in person to submit your application along with your documents.
Biometrics
Estonian authorities will take your photo and collect your fingerprints on the same day you submit your Schengen visa application. If you have already given fingerprints for a visa in the last 59 months, you will not need to do it again.
Who Is Exempt From the Biometrics Requirement?
The following individuals do not need to provide fingerprints:
- Children under 12 years old
- People who cannot physically provide fingerprints
- State or Government Leaders, National Government Members, and their spouses, as well as official delegation members, if they are officially invited by governments of Member States or International Organizations
- Royals and senior members of royal families, when officially invited by governments of Member States or International Organizations
Attend the Visa Interview
On the same day, you will be required to sit down for a brief interview regarding your travel plans to Estonia. Please ensure to answer all the questions honestly.
Pay the Schengen Visa Fee
When submitting a visa application, you are required to pay a processing fee as follows:
- Schengen Visa- 80 EUR.
- Children 6-11 years- 50 EUR.
- Children under 6 years- FREE.
However, this payment does not ensure visa approval. Additionally, submitting your application via an external service provider incurs an extra service fee.
*When making a payment via bank transfer, ensure the payment order specifies the recipient as the Estonian Ministry of Finance.
Can Someone Else Apply on My Behalf?
Yes, someone else can apply on your behalf as long as you have given them the authorisation to do so, and you are not required to submit your biometric information.
Wait for the Visa to Process
Typically, the consulate makes a decision on your application within 15 days after it’s deemed acceptable. However, this processing time can be extended to up to 45 days in some cases, especially if your application needs a closer look or if you are asked to provide more documents.
You will be notified of your Schengen visa application status (approved/rejected) via email or SMS.
Track Your Application
You can track your application online by using a code that is stamped on the visa fee receipt of your application or by using an application reference number you receive during your online application.
However, this option may not be available to all applicants, especially those applicants who must submit their application to another Schengen embassy representing Estonia in their country.
Receiving a Positive Decision
When your visa is finished processing, you will receive a notification of the decision. If your application has been approved, you can simply pick up your passport and continue with your travel plans to Estonia.
Receiving a Negative Decision
If your visa is denied, you will receive a denial notice which contains the reasons for your denial and instructions on how to continue next. You can submit an appeal request against the denial notice or reapply for the visa again.
If you choose to reapply for the visa, then you must first address the reasons for your initial denial so that your visa is not rejected again.
How Can I Appeal Against a Negative Decision?
To appeal against a negative decision, you must send a written appeal request to the relevant representation where you submitted your application within 30 days of receiving the decision.
If the decision remains the same after the appeal request, you can send a second appeal to the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within 30 days of receiving the decision of the first appeal.
Will My Visa Fee Be Refunded?
Unfortunately, visa fees are non-refundable, meaning you won’t get your money back even if your visa application is denied. This policy applies regardless of the outcome of your application.
Collect Your Passport
After your visa application is finished processing, you can pick up your passport at the same embassy or visa centre where you submitted it. If your application is approved, your visa will be attached to your passport.
You can usually pick up your passport in person or have it sent by courier. The latter may be available only with visa application centres and may cost you additional fees.
Enter Estonia
Keep in mind that obtaining a visa to Estonia does not guarantee that you will be able to enter the country. The final decision regarding entry is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.
To enter Estonia, you may be required to present documents that show your eligibility for entry into the country:
- Your passport. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen zone and be issued within the last ten years.
- Proof of accommodation. You can provide a hotel booking, a rental agreement, or an invitation letter from someone in Estonia.
- Travel itinerary. Provide a travel itinerary demonstrating your plans in Estonia, including reservations for train tickets, flight bookings, or other relevant documents.
- Evidence of sufficient financial means. You must prove that you have enough money to cover your stay in Estonia.
- Travel insurance. You must have valid travel insurance that covers your whole stay in Estonia.
