The Dallas Mavericks announced Monday morning via a press release that they have signed Head Coach Jason Kidd to a multi-year contract extension. Kidd signed a four-year deal with the Mavericks in 2021 after the team parted ways with Rick Carlisle.

Kidd has led the Mavericks to two 50+ win seasons during his three-year Mavericks coaching tenure. During these two seasons, the Mavericks have made it to the second round of the playoffs and had a Conference Finals appearance in 2022.

The Mavericks finished the season 21-9 after the trade deadline acquisitions of PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford. Additionally, they finished with a defensive rating of, 111.4, completely rebranding the way they play basketball. Credit to Kidd where credit is due for making adjustments to his team that allowed them to identify with a new brand of basketball, playing more physically and in the paint as opposed to raining three-pointers.

On the extension, Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont stated, “Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we are looking forward to his leadership in continuing to build and grow this already great franchise.”

The extension comes days after the Mavericks defeated the Clippers in the first round, winning the series in six games.

One would prefer that a head coach and front office have their focus set on beating the number-one-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. On the other hand, Kidd’s record during his time in Dallas speaks for itself. To add to this, it has become evident that Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving enjoy having Kidd around. Kidd was one of the major contributing factors to landing Irving in Dallas at the 2022-2023 Trade Deadline.

The Mavericks have a tough road ahead as they are set to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 on Tuesday night and it will be interesting to see what gameplans Kidd executes in the absence of Maxi Kleber.
