2024 WNBA Draft: Mystics select Aaliyah Edwards No. 6 overall

The UConn forward is coming to D.C. She is also a member of the Canada women’s national basketball team.

On Monday, the Washington Mystics announced that they selected Aaliyah Edwards from the University of Connecticut with the No. 6 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Edwards, a forward played four seasons for the Huskies starting in 99 of her 132 games. UConn made the Final Four in three of her four seasons. In the 2023-24 season, she averaged 18.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

During her college career, Edwards also won numerous Big East Conference awards, including being the Sixth Woman of the Year (2020-21), Most Improved Player (2022-23) and First Team (2022-23 and 2023-24). She was named a WBC Coaches’ All-American in the 2023-24 se

Edwards will help the Mystics improve their frontcourt depth and need for consistent scoring. However, she will have to develop a three point shot, which she didn’t show much of in her college days.

Edwards hails from Kingston, Ontario, about 160 miles northeast of Toronto. She has played for the Canadian women’s national team, representing them in the 2020 Olympic team and being part of their silver medal team in the 2019 Women’s AmeriCup and bronze medal in the 2023 Women’s AmeriCup.
